Money can make you happy, only if you spend it in a clever way. 

Buying a new car makes you happy. However, you will forget the feeling when the car gets old. But if you spend a week travelling, it's more possible that you'll remember the great experiences, and you'll remember the feeling for a long time. A new study has found that spending money on experiences makes people happier than on material things. 

For material things, it's possible that you'll care about every little thing. If you buy a nice pen, and someone else buys one with less money, it's possible that you may be unhappy because you spend more money. When it comes to experiences like trips, you won't think like that. If the experience is generally good, you will be happy with the price. 

Material things can be compared more easily. If you buy an MP5 and then see a more suitable one, you may regret (后悔) buying the first one. However, if you have a nice dinner at one restaurant, and then learn about another better restaurant, you'll not regret the first meal. 

Material things can cause jealousy (嫉妒). For example, if you buy a new toy and find that your friend has a better toy, you'll feel unhappy. Instead, if you travel to a beautiful place, then no matter where your friends have gone, it won't make the memory of your trip less happy. 

A budget is a spending plan. It can help you spend money wisely. It can do this by cutting out spending. So how to make a budget? Your budget should meet your family's needs and income. 

The first step is to plan your goals. What does your family need and want? You must know this to work out what the budget can do. Keep goals realistic (现实的). Then decide which goals are the most important. 

The next step is to find out family income. Write down all the money you expect to get. Before you can plan wisely, you need to know how much money you have to spend! 

After you know how much money will be available (可用的), it is time to find out expenses (支出). List all of your family expenses. If you are not happy with what you got for your money, look carefully at your spending. Studying your records will show where overspending (超支) has happened. It will also find out bad buying habits. 

It is also a good idea to prepare some money for emergencies (紧急情况). Every family has small emergencies. If we can plan earlier, we can deal with them better. 

Nowadays, many people prefer to use mobile phones to pay for things. It is 1 and safe. You don't need to carry a 2 full of cash or cards. Just scan a code and the payment is done 3 a moment.

·Friendship with Meng Haoran

When Li Bai travelled to Xiangyang in Hubei, he went to visit a famous poet called Meng Haoran. He was twelve years older than Li Bai, but they became friends because they trusted and respected each other. They both loved travelling to beautiful mountains and rivers. When Meng Haoran left for today's Yangzhou, Li Bai wrote a poem about it—Seeing Meng Haoran off at Yellow Crane Tower. 

Su Shi, known as Su Dongpo, was a famous Chinese writer, poet and painter. When he was young, he read a lot of books and wrote many good articles. People thought  (high) of him. Because of this, he became very proud and wrote a couplet (对联) for (him): "Knowing all the words in the world, reading all the books on the earth. " A wise old man saw this couplet and thought, "It is necessary for Su Shi  (learn) how to be modest. " So, one day, he came to Su Shi's house with a book. The old man showed Su Shi the book and explained, "So far, I  (read) the book several times, but there are still some difficult words that I can't understand. I have asked many people,  none of them could understand their meanings. I have heard that you are a person of rich knowledge, so I came to ask you. " Full of confidence, Su Shi took the book from the old man's hand, but when he opened it, he became very (surprise) because there were many words he didn't know. At that moment, Su Shi  (realize) that there were many more things that he had to learn. Actually, the old man knew every word in this book. He just wanted to make Su Shi  (know) the importance of being modest. Su Shi was embarrassed (尴尬的) and said, "Now I know why you came. I shouldn't have been so arrogant (自大的). " The old man smiled and left. Then Su Shi  (quick) took his brush and ink, and added some words to the couplet: Working hard to know all the words in the world; Being determined to read all the books on the earth. From then on, he worked even  (hard) than before. Finally, Su Shi made great achievements in many fields, especially in literature. 

Fu Lei's Family Letters (傅雷家书) is a book of letters. It was  by Fu Lei, a well-known Chinese translator and writer, to his elder son Fu Cong (傅聪). These letters are full  deep love and wise advice. 

From 1954 to 1966, Fu Cong spent most of his time working as a pianist overseas. So writing letters became Fu Lei's usual way of  with his elder son. Fu Min (傅敏), Fu Lei's younger son, put these letters together and edited (编辑) them , and the book finally came out in 1981. 

The book truly shows Fu Lei's deep  love and his life values. For Fu Lei, the aim (目标) of educating a person is to make them do their part for society (社会). After Fu Cong won an important piano competition (比赛), Fu Lei praised him warmly in a letter. He wrote that he was  of his son for bringing pride to the country. He also believed his son would  himself a lot in the future and bring more warmth to people around. In these warm family letters, Fu Cong was also advised to keep reading many classic Chinese  in his daily time. When reading these books, he was told to link his own ideas with his true feelings. To Fu Lei, being a good person comes studying. 

Fu Lei's Family Lettershas a great  on people in China till now. It helps many young students know how to live a meaningful and valuable life, guiding them to grow into people who are helpful to others and society. 

Have you heard of Oliver Twist or Peter Pan? These are just some of the characters (角色) that have been created by British writers. 

Geoffrey Chaucer was a famous poet in the 1300s. He wrote poetic short stories about people travelling to Canterbury. 

Probably the most famous British writer was William Shakespeare. In the late 1500s and early 1600s, Shakespeare wrote plays that became famous all over the world.  Some of his plays were comedies, such as Twelfth Night, others were tragedies (悲剧), such as King Lear. 

 Early stories were often printed a chapter (章节) at a time in a newspaper. People would have to get the newspaper every week to read the whole story. One of the most famous stories, Oliver Twist, was written by Charles Dickens at that time. 

 Maybe you have heard of some of them. Robert Louis Stevenson wrote the adventure novel Treasure Island. J. M. Barrie wrote Peter Pan and Lewis Carroll wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Do you know a teddy bear called Winnie the Pooh?  And it is still one of children's favorite characters. 

There are so many famous characters in British plays, novels and poetry. What other characters do you know? 

Over 120 years ago, a little girl named Bing Xin was born in Fuzhou, Fujian Province. She loved reading very much when she was a child, but she didn't have enough books at home. She had to borrow books from her neighbors and read them day and night. She made up her mind to be a writer when she grew up, to write stories for children and let them know more about the world. This little girl is Bing Xin, one of the most famous women writers in China. 

Bing Xin devoted her whole life to writing. She wrote many famous works for children, such as To the Young Readers. Her words are warm and gentle, and they have encouraged millions of Chinese children to love reading and writing. ____ Today, many children still read her books and feel the love and kindness in them. 

As teenagers today, we should learn from Bing Xin. We should keep the habit of reading, because reading can make us wise and help us grow up. We should also have a dream and work hard for it, just like Bing Xin. No matter how hard the life is, never give up our dreams. Our efforts will make our dreams come true one day. 

Reading is a lifelong journey, and writing is a way to express our feelings. Let's follow Bing Xin's steps, read more books and write our own stories.
