Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word "cold".

For example, people who show no human emotions or feelings are said to be cold-blooded. Cold can affect other parts of the body. But the expression "get cold feet" has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be CEO of a company. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned (辞职), and all the work of the company will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being CEO when you understand the situation.

The expression "give someone the cold shoulder" probably comes from the physical (身体的) act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give the cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you, or to someone who has lied about you to others.

"A cold fish" is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone. Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted. He or she will never feel sorry for those in bad situation.

"Out in the cold" means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise — he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.

Jennifer Smith is one of the people who have dyslexia (诵读困难). She found that she had this unusual problem when she was nine years old. Jennifer said, "On some days, I could remember how to read a simple word like ‘the'. But on other days, I might forget it." Reading and spelling were harder for her than for others. She often felt sad because of it.

Soon after, Jennifer started receiving special courses once a week. Her teacher used different methods to teach her, like showing pictures, listening to sounds, and doing activities. Jennifer worked very hard. After three weeks, she could read whole sentences by herself. That made her feel very pleased.

Three years later, Jennifer found a boy in her neighborhood who had trouble reading. But the boy's parents didn't realize the problem. Jennifer wanted to help him and other kids with the same problem. She thought writing a book about her experience might be helpful.

Writing a book wasn't easy for Jennifer. But when she saw the situation of children with dyslexia, she became even more determined (坚定的). Finally, her efforts paid off. The book Dyslexia Wonders was completed. In the book, she shared her experience with dyslexia and offered advice to deal with it.

Later, Jennifer set up a fund (基金). The money from the fund has helped many kids with dyslexia. She became more confident. "As long as we try hard and have confidence, all of us can get over challenges and make a difference," she said.

Long ago, there was a kind-hearted king in the state of Chu. He cared deeply for his people.

One year in winter, the weather was very cold. It snowed so heavily for several days that everywhere was covered with snow. The common people had to hide in their homes. Soon, the firewood of many families was almost used up. Everyone was shivering (发抖) with cold.

King Chu was wearing thick clothes and warming himself by the charcoal fire (炭火) in the palace. Still, he felt a bit cold. Looking at the heavy snow outside the window, he thought, "I feel so cold even in the warm palace. Those common people must be even colder. How can they stay warm during the winter?" Very soon, King Chu ordered ministers (大臣) to prepare thick clothes and charcoal and handed them out. They knocked on every door and gave clothes and charcoal to each family. When the common people saw King Chu and the ministers coming to send them clothes and charcoal, they were all very moved and said one after another, "King Chu is really a good king. When we were in the greatest need of help, he brought us warmth."

Since then, the phrase "xue zhong song tan" has spread widely. People use it to describe giving help in time when others are in the most difficult situation and in the greatest need of help, just like sending charcoal in the cold winter.

Lucy works in a small butclothing store. Her job is to help customers and handle payments. One rainy day, she was using one of the softest to clean some dust off a stylish jacket.A customer entered the store with a(n) umbrella. Lucy quickly her with a towel to dry off. 

The customer wanted to buy a new dress but didn't like the colour. Lucy politely said,"We can offer it with another one." 

The manager told Lucy that the job needed good skills. She smiled and continued helping customers. 

Recently I was invited to attend a party that helps children seriously injured(受伤的) in the big earthquake that happened this May. I went because I1 . 

At the party, all the children were given paints in bright, beautiful colours. After a short time, as I 2 , I saw blue clouds, orange sunrises and purple flowers. The 3 were all bright.

Sometimes adults may want you to become a doctor, or work in banking, or be a teacher. Listen to them, but remember it's your life and it's your decision.  

Consider what you are good at.

It's true that things like salary are important, but don't let them lead you down the wrong path. Follow your heart and your personality.  If you don't like work which needs lots of attention to detail(细节), think long and hard before you decide to do something like applying(申请) to study engineering at university. 

Your first decision isn,t forever.

Some people are lucky. They start a job, love it straight away and stick at it. But it isn't always like that. So remember that you are allowed to change your mind. It's not necessary to worry for years. 

Some people choose their jobs simply because they think they'll make huge amounts of money. OK, if that is what you want. But people usually get more satisfaction out of their jobs if they feel they are doing something valuable for others. It doesn't have to be charity work. It could be a job that helps other people in the community. 

Anyway, remember, think twice before choosing your job.

① Nowadays, some companies around the world are now offering humanoid robots. They are being designed(设计) to look as human as possible. These products of technology are at the centre of a debate(辩论): Should they be made to look like humans or just like what they are—machines?

②Robots are playing an increasingly bigger role in our lives. In some countries, robots have been entertaining kids and helping the elderly. Some experts say robots will be more effective at such jobs if they look like humans. Research has shown that people feel closer to humanlike robots. Also, humanlike robots suit environments that are designed for humans. After all, the world is full of stairs(楼梯), hallways, shelves at shoulder height and sight lines at eye level. 

③But other experts say robots don't need to look like humans. Humanoid robots also have disadvantages. If robots look like us, we may expect them to act like us. However, they may make us disappointed because they can't always do that yet. For example, they can't laugh at the right moments during a conversation. Many people also find humanlike robots scary. 

④I think the human body is not the best design for many of the jobs we want robots to do. Just think of small, flat robot vacuum cleaners(真空吸尘器). They can go under a sofa to pick up the dustballs. Can humanlike robots also do this? Even if robots can be made into humanlike ones, why do we limit (限定) them to two legs and two arms? Why not four and six so they can pick up the elderly or sick people comfortably? And that super intelligent AI almost certainly wouldn't pick one body design to carry its mind around in. Why limit computational capacity(算力) to what fits inside a single head?

⑤What's your opinion about robots' shapes?

Recently, nearly 200 people in Vienna, got together for a special activity. They did two fun things at the same time. They knitted and watched the movie The Devil Wears Prada together. 

"It may sound like something grandmothers do, but it's really relaxing," joked 28-year-old Koch, who loves knitting, "And there's nothing wrong with letting the____grandmother side, of us come out!" Knitting while watching movies is becoming popular in Europe. 

Luisa Palmer was one of the event's organizers. She said that,"During the COVID-19, many people started knitting when they had to stay at home alone." After that, Palmer started monthly "knitting movie nights" at a cinema. At these movie nights, people knit, eat snacks, and some even feed their babies while watching the film. She said this activity is a new way to make movie-watching more interesting. 

To help people avoid mistakes in their knitting, the cinema keeps soft lights on during the movie. This also makes it easier for people to talk to each other. 

"I usually knit at home while watching movies," said 23-year-old fashion student Kaja Vospernik. "So cinemas are the perfect place for this activity!" As the movie plays, people's colorful knitting projects slowly take shape. For many, the movie becomes less important than their knitting. Everyone shows off their finished work, and experienced knitters help beginners learn new skills. 

People join these events for different reasons. Some say they want to connect with something real, not just things on a computer. Others say they want to "slow down a little" in their busy lives. 

Palmer said, "Doing something with your own hands is more satisfying than working on a computer all day." She added that choosing the right movie is important too. She joked that scary movies are not a good idea—they might make you jump and lose your place in the knitting!

Many years ago, I worked as a taxi driver. One time I had to pick up a passenger in the middle of the night. When I arrived at the address, the building was dark, except a light in a ground floor window. Waiting for a few minutes, I heard a weak voice from an old woman, "Just a minute." The door opened. I saw a lady in her eighties. She carried a little suitcase in her hand. I helped her get into my taxi. "Thank you." she said. 

After we sat in the taxi, she gave me an address and asked, "Could you drive through the city center?" I told her that was not the shortest way. "I know, but I'm going to a hospice. I have no family at all." I saw tears in her eyes. 

I quietly turned off the taxi meter(计程器) and asked her which way she wanted to go. As we drove through the city, the old lady showed me the places that meant a lot to her. There was the building where she once worked, the house where she lived with her husband, and a house with a big ballroom. She used to dance there when she was young. 

After two hours' driving, we arrived at the address, two nurses came over to the taxi. "How much should I pay you?" she asked. "Nothing." I said. Then I gave her a hug. She held me very tight. "Thank you for the happy moments," she said. 

When I walked back to my taxi, I heard a door close. It sounded like the end of a life. I didn't pick up any more passengers that day. I just drove aimlessly, thinking about the old lady. What if she had met a cold driver? I think this trip was the most meaningful thing I have ever done in my life.
