Humour is part of human nature. Everyone has the ability to enjoy jokes and laughter, no matter who they are or where they come from. Humour is one of (important) ways people make connections with each other. Humour also helps you look on the bright side of life and face problems (wise).

Although different people may have a different sense of humour, good humour has something  common. You need to keep a cool head and an open mind. Humour brings (happy) to others. And sometimes it can let your friend save face. 

Siene is a firefighter in the USA. It isn't easy to become a firefighter there. Many people try, but a lot of them （失败）. Also, in the past, women couldn't （容易地）become firefighters. 

When Siene was five years old, it was her dream to become a firefighter. Forty years later, she was the oldest woman to （通过）a six-week course at the WFPA（女子消防预备学院）. The WFPA trains women in the skills they need to be firefighters. In （事实）, Siene now trains firefighters there herself. 

Starting the course doesn't mean you'll become a firefighter. You can't （想象）how difficult the course is！ They are trained like being in the army—Can you hold a heavy piece of wood for four minutes （没有）any help？ How many exercises can you do？ Can you lift a12-meter ladder？ Are you a skillful driver？ There are so many more that are a part of firefighting these days. 

However, the （机会）to work as a firefighter is not easy to get even after you finish your course. It seems that lots of women aren't （准备好）to do that. In one year, 50 women got trained, but only three of them are now firefighters. Learning the skills is not enough to become a firefighter. You have to face many （困难）. More importantly, you need to stick to your dream, like Siene. 

Do you like travelling? Are you  a day trip to experience culture, humor, and a race? You can do this at the Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling in England. It's so  that a lot of people take part in it. 

The  starts at the top of a big hill. Someone pushes the cheese down the hill. People run  the hill and hope to catch the cheese. The  gets to take the cheese home as a prize. When you visit England,  this to your list of day trips to take. 

Sitting on the side of the highway and waiting to catch speeding（超速的）drivers, a police officer saw a car driving along at 22 miles per hour. 

He couldn't1 his eyes when he saw a car drive past him so slowly on the highway. He thought to himself, "This driver is just as2 as a speeder! I'm going to catch them. " So he pulled out, came up behind the car,3 his lights and pulled the driver over. Getting closer to the car, he noticed that there were4 old ladies, two in the front seat and three in the back,5 wide eyes and pale（苍白的）faces. 

The driver, who knew6 about what happened, said to him, "Officer, I don't understand7 you stopped us. I was doing exactly the speed limit（限制）! What8 could it be?"

"Ma' am, " the officer replied, "you weren't speeding, but you should know that driving a lot more9 than the speed limit can also be a danger to other drivers. The same as a speeder. "

"10 , Sir. I was doing the speed limit exactly 22 miles an hour!" the old woman said in a proud （骄傲的）voice. The officer, almost unable to hold back his chuckle（偷笑）, explained to11 that"22" was the route（线路）number, not the speed limit.

Could it be possible to spend your nights sleeping thousands of times, each time for only four seconds(秒)? Does it sound like a terrible dream?

Well, that's exactly how chinstrap penguin(帽带企鹅) parents sleep. 

Like other penguins, chinstrap penguins spend much of their time in the water, catching fish to eat. But when the time comes to raise their young, they return to land. They lay eggs in nests(巢) made of small rocks. One parent keeps the nest safe, while the other hunts for food. For one thing, brown skuas(贼鸥) like to attack(攻击) the eggs and young penguins. 

Besides, other penguins nearby may take rocks from the nest, putting the young in danger. It can be dangerous for the young if their parents get a good night's sleep. However, staying awake for 24 hours a day is hard for penguin parents. 

Faced with these challenges, chinstrap penguins have found an unusual way to solve the problem. When scientists first noticed chinstrap penguins kept blinking（眨眼）their eyes, they wondered if more was happening than just blinking. So they studied the brain activity of the penguins and recorded the birds on video. The study showed that the tired parents were actually sleeping very often and for very short time! Each sleep lasts only about four seconds. By taking over 10, 000 microsleeps a day, the penguins get a total of about 11 hours of sleep a day. How amazing!

It's not certain if the microsleeps help the penguins feel truly rested, or if they' re just enough to keep them going. The scientists don't know if the penguins sleep this way at other times of the year, or only when they' re raising their young. They also don't know if other kinds of penguins have similar sleeping habits. Further research is needed to learn more about these flightless birds. 

①Some people like having instant noodles(方便面) as a quick lunch— others enjoy them while traveling through the air. But some passengers on Korean Air can't do this anymore. The airline has taken its much-loved instant noodles off its economy(经济舱) menu. 

②The reason? Turbulence(气流). Turbulence on planes has gone up by as much as 55% over the past 40years, a 2023 UK study found. And Korean Air said the number of times its flights(航班) have experienced turbulence has doubled since 2019. 

③The airline said that this, along with little space in the walkways and passengers sitting close together, could raise the danger of passengers being burned(烫伤) by hot water in cups of instant noodles. In June 2024, a passenger traveling on an Air New Zealand flight was burned when turbulence caused a full pot of coffee to fall from the drinks holder. Later in early July, a woman sued(起诉) US airline JetBlue after being badly burned by hot tea during turbulence. 

④Instant noodles were part of Korean Air's in-flight menu, and were given for free on longer flights before. But since August 15, 2024, economy passengers have found other foods— like sandwiches and pizza— on the menu instead of instant noodles. Passengers in business and first class are still able to enjoy instant noodles, however. That's because the possibility of these passengers being burned is lower. 

⑤Online, people have mixed feelings about the decision(决定). Some don't agree with it, saying the airline has kept other foods that could make burns happen, like tea and coffee. But others agree with Korean Air, with some saying they' re often worried about getting burned, and others saying they don't like the smell of the instant noodles anyway. 

Paul Jenkinson is a retired（退休的）man who is traveling across Canada offering a very special service for free listening. He sits in public places with two chairs, a small table, and a sign that reads, "You are not alone. I will listen. "

Many different kinds of people come to talk to Paul: Some are young, some are old, some are going through difficult problems, while others are facing hard decisions. And some people just want to tell him about something pleasant—perhaps problems they have got over, or things they are thankful for. He always nods to show he's listening with care. "I try to put myself in their shoes and feel what they feel, " Paul says. 

Paul isn't a therapist（治疗师）. But with his background in social work, he has professional（专业的）experience working with children, families and older people. And at 70 years of age, he also has his own life's experiences of joy and sadness. He says, "I have learned to create a safe place for people who simply want someone to listen carefully to what they need to share. "

Although Paul doesn't offer counseling（咨询）or advice, he says that very often when people talk about their problems they find the solutions（解决方案）on their own. Paul's friend Gary MacLeod says, "You will find ways, through conversations with Paul, that will help you to feel lighter and see the brighter side of life. "

Paul's one-year journey began in May 2025, starting on Canada's east sea side in his home province of Nova Scotia. He plans to travel as far as British Columbia on the country's west sea side. "People appear to be benefiting and I'm benefiting, too, " he says. "I am so happy to meet all these wonderful, sweet, smart, experienced people. "

Then Mr Arty starts with maths. He writes something on the whiteboard.

Then Mr Arty teaches the class Chinese.  he is still wrong. 

At lunch, Dan and some of his (classmate) talk about the new teacher. 

"He does something interesting, doesn't he?"

"Yes, but he is not very clever. Are his ideas (use)?"

After lunch Beth and Dan go out to play football. Mr Arty (walk) by. The ball hits（碰撞）him. Then Mr Arty starts to run very quickly. He can't stop! Then he runs into the class teacher and hurts him. The class teacher is angry and wants to give the robot teacher away. But Beth says she can fix Mr Arty (good). 

Now Beth and Dan have a new PE teacher. He is Mr Arty. 

It is not easy being 100 years old, right? And it may （听起来）really hard to be active at that age. Jayne Burns is more than 100 years old, but she still works at a craft（手工艺品）store in Ohio, America. She doesn't think she should stop working now, or life will be too （无聊的）for her. 

The old woman is already 103 years old. And she doesn't change her /maɪnd/ about slowing down. Burns started the job in 1997 and she still does the /seɪm/ job now. She （花费）much time on it and enjoys it very much.

You may know about"junk food", like hamburgers, ice-cream and so on. They are all unhealthy for our body. 

A British survey（调查）shows that there are many electronic products（电子产品）in kids' rooms. And they are making kids' sleep unhealthy too. 

About 1, 000 British kids from 12 to 16 join the survey.  But doctors say they need 8 to 9 hours. 

Nearly（几乎）all the kids have one electronic product in their rooms or even more.  They may fall asleep while they are watching TV, listening to music or using other electronic products. 

"We worry about this a lot, " says Dr. Chris. "We call it'junk sleep'.  " The survey finds that lots of the kids feel tired every day, especially（尤其是）girls between 13 and 16.  So Dr. Chris says that parents should help their children stop using electronic products too much. 

①How many trees are there in China? Scientists count all the trees in China for the first time and find 142. 6 billion（十亿）. That's like people in China each having around 100 trees!

②But how do they count so many trees in such a big country? Scientists don't visit every forest in China. They choose 76, 000 different places across the country. And they count the trees by using two special"eyes". One"eye" is a drone（无人机）. It flies above the forests and takes pictures of the trees. The other"eyes" is a small device（设备）with laser sensors（激光传感器）. Scientists take it to collect information while walking in forests. Then, they use AI to study the information and find out the number of trees in China. 

③Here are some facts（事实）about the trees in China. 

·Southwestern（西南的）China has the most trees—about 36 billion. 

·People in Xizang each have about 2, 000 trees. That is more than in any other place in China. 

·China has 5. 0819 million old trees. Yunnan stands out（特别突出）, with more than 1 million of these trees.

④Trees are important for our world. They help stop the weather from being too hot or too cold and they keep the air clean for us. They are also home to many animals. If we know how many trees there are and where they are, we can help them grow better. 

I am Leo Harrison. I love animals and always want a pet. But I can't have pets because two of my family members are allergic（过敏性的）to animal hair. Now, my job helps me with that—I'm a pet taxi driver（司机）！

One day, I am at a friend's home. We are talking when his pet dog hurts（受伤）its leg. My friend tries to get a taxi to take the dog to the animal hospital. He makes three calls. But no driver wants a dog in the taxi. At last, my friend gets a car from a neighbour and takes his dog to the hospital. 

That gives me the idea to start driving for animals. I begin a"Taxi Pet" service（服务）. That means dogs, cats, birds and other pets can all take my taxi. 

I make three to four trips a day. Pet owners（主人）usually ask me to take them and their pets to the animal hospitals. I also take them to pet stores, shopping centres, beaches and many other places. Every time when I drive the pets back to their home, I know the animals are healthy and happy. And this is the best part of my job. 

Now, I make most of my money from"Taxi Pet". Every day I make new friends. And they are all loving and friendly. I'm more than happy to help these animal friends!

①One of the fun ways to celebrate Easter（复活节）is drawing pictures on eggs, but things look a little different this year in the US. Egg prices now are higher than before. This makes eggs hard to buy. 

②How much is an egg? It is usually no more than ¥1. But this year in the US, an egg can be more than ¥0. 75(about ¥5.5). Still, these expensive eggs are hard to get. Many supermarkets only let people buy a box of 12 eggs. Supermarkets often sell（卖）all their eggs in an hour. 

③The US is facing an egg shortage（短缺）. Why? That's because of bird flu（流感）. A lot of chickens in the US are ill. People have to kill（杀）them. With fewer chickens, there are fewer eggs. 

④Also, farms in the US are usually big. Each farm can keep millions（百万）of chickens. When there is bird flu, big farms have a hard time. Soon, there will be too few eggs. 

⑤The US is trying to work out the problem. Here are some ways American people are trying to help. For example, some people are keeping chickens in their own backyards. Others are renting（租）chickens to get fresh eggs. The US is also buying eggs from other countries. Things are still hard, but these ways are helping to bring down the price and bring more eggs to people. 

Today, the robot club is taking part in the National Robot Competition(比赛) at the Children's Science Centre. 

"Come on, let's go! We' re late!"Ruby calls out. Charlie 1 puts their robot into a box. Paul takes the box, and the 2 of them get on the bus. 

There are so many school clubs at the science centre. Charlie starts to feel 3 , "Can we make it?"

Paul finds their school's table and puts down their box.
