Scientists from the University of Florida (UF) have recently reported on the world's largest place for fresh water turtles to lay eggs. They counted about 41,000 Giant South American River Turtles there. Just as importantly, they developed a more exact method of counting the turtles.

Scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) use drones(无人机) to photograph turtles from above. These pictures are made into large maps called orthomosaics(正射影像图), which provide a fuller view of the local turtle population.

Later, UF researcher Ismael Brack met with WCS scientists. They marked the shells of 1,187 turtles with paint. They then flew a drone over the area four times a day for 12 days. On each trip the drone took 1,500pictures. The researchers used computers to create orthomosaics from these pictures. Next, the scientists carefully studied how many marked turtles were visible in these pictures. Using this information, the researchers created a special math model to help them recognize and count more exactly how many turtles were really using the sandbank.

The results were surprising. People counting on the ground counted about 16,000 turtles. Simply counting turtles in the orthomosaics without using the math model gave a much bigger number —— about 79,000. But the math model showed that the real number was about 41,000.

Dr. Brack points out that having an exact count of the turtles is important for protecting them. Without it,it's difficult to know if the number is going up or down. The team plans to keep working to improve the method.They believe the method can be used to count other kinds of animals, too.

Have you ever been annoyed by a loud noise while studying for a big exam? That's what happened to the students at Shenzhen Bao'an Middle School. Some birds were singing loudly outside their windows, over and over again. As the Gaokao was coming soon, a student Xiao Le wrote a letter to the headmaster, asking if the school could take the bird's nest away to make it quiet.

The headmaster, Mr. Yuan Weixing, understood Xiao Le's worry. But instead of saying yes, he refused the request in an open letter.

In his letter, the headmaster said that nature has its own rhythm. The birds, called koels, were singing because it was their breeding (繁殖) season. He told Xiao Le in the letter, "The world is not for just one person. Learning to get along with others in the world is a necessary part of growing up." He suggested that Xiao Le could think of the bird songs as nature's own "white noise" or a special "concert". This could help him feel relaxed during study breaks.

Saying no to the request didn't mean doing nothing. The headmaster also took action to help. The school gave out earplugs to students who needed them. They also built new, man-made bird nests in a garden far from the classroom buildings to gently lead the birds away.
