Zhang Xiangwen's Former Residence (故居)

Zhang Xiangwen (1867–1933) was a great Chinese geographer and educator. He was born in Siyang County, Jiangsu Province. People call him the "father of modern geography in China" because of his many important contributions.

Zhang wrote China's first geography textbook for primary schools in 1901. He also wrote the first geography textbook for middle schools. In 1908, he published Diwenxue (Physical Geography), which was China's first work on physical geography. In 1909, he founded the Chinese Geographical Society, the first geography academic group in China. In 1910, he started the first geography journal in China, named Dizue Zazhi (Geographical Journal).

Zhang is most famous for proposing (提议；建议) the Qinling Mountains-Huaihe River Line. He was the first scientist to suggest that this line is the natural dividing line between northern and southern China. This idea is still widely used today.

Today, people can visit Zhang's former residence in the Nanyuan Scenic Area in Siyang County. The area covers 47.8 mu (about 

7.9 acres). It includes Zhang's old house, the Chinese Geography Museum, and other cultural spots. The former residence has four exhibition halls, a private school, and a garden. Visitors can see old photos, books, and rooms where Zhang once lived and worked.

The design of Nanyuan follows Zhang's "Five Realms" ("五界") theory. The five realms are: the Realm of Stars, the Realm of Land, the Realm of Air, the Realm of Water, and the Realm of Living Things. Nanyuan is not only a beautiful park but also a national patriotic education base and a science education center. Many students come here every year to learn about Zhang's life and his scientific spirit.

After breakfast Martha went to visit her mother for the day. Mary felt lonely in the house without her so she went outside into the bright sunshine. She ran round and round the fountain (喷泉) and soon she started to feel better. Ben Weatherstaff was in the vegetable garden. He didn't look angry that day so she went to speak to him.

"The spring's coming," he said to her. "Can you see those green points in the earth?" Mary looked.

"What are they?" she asked.

"They're spring flowers." Then the robin (知更鸟) appeared and sat on the ground near them. "Is spring coming in the secret garden, too?" Mary asked Ben.

"Ask the robin," said Ben, "He's the only one who knows." And he went back to work.

The robin was hopping around on the ground. Mary was watching him when she saw something in the earth.

She picked it up. It was an old key.

Mary looked at the key for a long time. Then she put it in her pocket and walked back to her room. The next morning Martha was there as usual. She told Mary about her day at her mother's house.

She brought a skipping rope as a present to Mary. Mary was not good at skipping at first. But she tried and tried and soon she didn't want to stop.

The sun was shining and the sky was blue. Mary skipped and counted and counted and skipped around the big garden. She decided to skip along her favourite path outside the walled gardens. It was very long and she had to stop before she arrived at the end of it because she was tired.

Then she saw the robin sitting on a long branch of the ivy (常春藤) on the wall. He chirped. Mary went up to him. "You showed me the key yesterday," she said. "Can you show me the door today?"

The robin flew to the top of the wall. Suddenly the wind blew the long branch of ivy to one side. Mary held it in her hand because she could see something under it — a door!

Mary took the old key out of her pocket and put it in the lock of the door. It worked. She was inside the secret garden!

Living green is all about reducing resources you use, reusing items when you can, and recycling things that can't be reused. If you want to live green, here are practical steps to follow:

First, learn more about green living. The first step is to understand how our daily habits affect the environment. Educate yourself on simple ways to reduce waste, save energy, and make eco-friendly choices.

Second, choose eco-friendly foods. The food we eat affects the environment. For example, food grown nearby doesn't need to travel far, so it causes less air pollution. Besides, organic (有机的) farming avoids using pesticides (杀虫剂) that are bad for plants and animals. As a result, eating local and organic food is good for both the Earth and your health!

Next, spend your money wisely. On the one hand, avoid buying things with too much packaging (包装). The packaging creates rubbish and hurts the environment. Even if you recycle the package, it's still an unnecessary waste of resources. On the other hand, you can try to buy second-hand things instead of buying new ones. When you really want to buy things you don't need, remember to borrow one, buy one from your favourite online resale shops or check flea markets (跳蚤市场). What's more, choosing green travel is also important. If you don't have a new-energy car at the moment, you can take other steps. You can walk or ride a bike to work. If the place you want to go is too far for a daily bicycle, you can take public transport.

Waste sorting is also important. By sorting waste into different groups like recyclables, kitchen waste, and harmful waste, we can reduce pollution. Sorting also helps communities. Cleaner streets and less burning rubbish mean cleaner air for everyone.

The United Nations (UN) has six Language Days every year. These days celebrate the UN's official languages: Arabic(阿拉伯语). Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. The UN treats all languages in the same way to show each matters.

Each language has its own special day. French speakers celebrate their language on March 20. Chinese Day is on April 20 because of an old Chinese story which tells how an ancient person named Cang Jie created Chinese characters. English Day is celebrated on April 23. This date is also shared by Spanish Day. Russian Day is on June6while Arabic Day is on December 18.

On these days, UN offices worldwide hold events. People join workshops, readings of stories and poems,and cultural shows with music and dance. These events are joyful and full of sharing. People enjoy learning and connecting with others. UN staff and locals join together.

These events show the UN values all languages and cultures. People at the events learn about different lifestyles through fun activities. Young people come to make friends from other countries and try new languages.They might learn basic phrases or practice speaking with native speakers. This builds understanding between cultures and makes sure all UN languages are treated fairly. These celebrations help create a friendlier and more peaceful world. Every language is important there.
