Putting things off is a common trouble for many middle school students. With piles of schoolwork and after-school activities, it's easy to feel anxious and push things to later. Soon, you may fall behind in classes, and your grades might drop. According to the experts, there are some effective ways to fight it.
First of all, break big tasks into tiny and manageable steps. A huge project can feel as scary as climbing a mountain. But if you divide it into small parts, it becomes much easier. Just tell yourself, "Today, I'll pick a topic and write one paragraph." Tomorrow, you can do some research and add another section. Finally, the "mountain" will be overcome before you know it.
Besides the "tiny steps" method, the "work-and-rest" trick also helps a lot. Set a timer for 25 minutes—during this time, focus fully on your work. During the period, you can have a snack, walk around your room, or stretch your legs freely. This short rest lets your brain refresh, and it's easier to keep going once you start again. Put your mobile phones away and find a quiet spot where you can focus.
What's more, treat yourself to something small after finishing a task, like listening to your favourite song or eat a piece of candy. These little rewards keep you motivated. Be patient with yourself-even small progress is progress. Finally, you'll surely see the payoff of your hard work.
A.Then take a five-minute break.
B.Also, stay away from what pulls your attention.
C.For example, you've got to write a five-page paper.
D.But if you keep putting them off, they can snowball.
E.Change doesn't happen overnight, so stick to it every day.

Beejhy Barhany grew up in an Ethiopian-Jewish family in Israel. She has loved cooking since she was very young. Now, she runs Tsion Cafe in New York and still follows many cooking traditions. One of these is washing raw meat before cooking. For Barhany, putting raw chicken in salt and lemon water is both useful and part of her culture.
In fact, a 2015 study showed that nearly 70% of Americans wash their chicken before cooking. However, since the 1990s, experts from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have advised people not to do this. They state that rather than reducing the risk of foodborne illness, washing raw meat makes it more likely to spread bacteria (细菌) around the kitchen, which may make people sick.
"Washing meat before cooking isn't really helpful," says Betty Feng, a food science professor at Purdue University. "The only thing it does is splashing (飞溅) water and can spread bacteria to other places in your kitchen—like your sink and your clothes." Moreover, Feng strongly disagrees with using saltwater, vinegar, or lemon juice, because they are not strong enough to kill bacteria. "If the acidity (酸度) is high enough to kill bacteria, you wouldn't be able to touch it with your hands," she explains.
A recent study also found that placing meat in a bowl of water reduced the splashing but not the spread of bacteria. "I would treat the sink just like the outside of the chicken—it could also be dirty and unsafe," says Benjamin Chapman, an associate professor in North Carolina State University. "The way that we make meat safe is through cooking, not through washing away bacteria."
(1)、Why does the writer mention Beejhy Barhany's story at the beginning?A、To introduce the topic. B、To make a comparison. C、To state the author's opinion. D、To broaden the readers' horizons.(2)、Why does Beejhy Barhany wash raw meat before cooking?A、She believes it is the only way to kill all bacteria. B、A recent study proves that this method is the safest. C、It is practical and also a common practice in her culture. D、The USDA strongly recommends this method to all Americans.(3)、Which of the following would Betty Feng and Benjamin Chapman most probably agree with?A、Washing raw meat is a necessary step before cooking. B、Washing raw meat may spread bacteria in the kitchen. C、Placing meat in a bowl of water makes it completely safe. D、Using saltwater or lemon juice is strong enough to kill bacteria.(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A、How to Wash Raw Meat Safely B、Scientific Studies on Illnesses Related to Food C、Beejhy Barhany: A Chef and Her Cooking Traditions D、To Wash or Not to Wash? In the heart of the city lies a local market, a place that offers a special shopping experience different from supermarkets. For many families, a Saturday trip to this market has become a tradition.
The market is divided into many different sections, and each offers its own specialties (特色商品). In the fresh produce area, farmers like Mr. Chen sell fruits and vegetables that are directly picked from their gardens. Unlike in supermarkets where produce is often prepackaged, customers here can even taste a cherry tomato or a piece of cucumber to see whether it is fresh or not. The bakery section, managed by Mr. Johnson, is located right next to the flower stalls (摊位). It fills the air with the warm smell of freshly baked bread and attracts many visitors every morning. For those interested in crafts, the handmade section shows plenty of special items. Local skilled craftsmen, some of whom are also part-time farmers, show their works here, such as delicate wooden toys and bamboo baskets. This area is quite popular with tourists who look for souvenirs.
Each family member finds something to enjoy. Children are often attracted to the bright flowers at Mrs. Lee's stall, while parents discuss the best ingredients for the week's meals with the friendly sellers. This direct interaction between buyers and sellers is a key feature of the market, creating a sense of community.
After finishing their shopping, many families choose to relax at a nearby cafe. They enjoy a drink and talk about what they've bought. The market is more than just a place to buy things; it serves as a social center where people connect, and a tradition that brings families together over the shared joy of fresh, local goods.
(1)、What is implied about the shopping experience in the fresh produce area?A、Food can be tasted for quality before buying. B、It is the favorite place for children at the market. C、Sellers there are less friendly than in supermarkets. D、Products are better packaged than in supermarkets.(2)、What can be inferred about Mr. Johnson's bakery section?A、It is owned by a local fruit farmer. B、It attracts people with its pleasant smell. C、It is the first stop for every family's visit. B、To emphasize the market's role in social life. C、To compare the market's food with the cafe's. D、To advise on building more cafes near the market. -

Ryan and Ahmed sat on their bicycles at the start of the cyclocross course. Ahmed had been competing in cyclocross for three years, but this was Ryan's first race. He wished he could remember everything Ahmed had taught him.
Ryan reviewed the last six months in his mind. From the moment Ahmed had first asked whether he would like to try the sport, Ryan had been excited. Ahmed explained the importance of practising and set up a plan for them two to practise together.
Practising was hard. Ryan soon got bored with working on the same skills over and over. He was ready to race! Ryan ended up skipping many of the practices. When Ryan did go to practices, he spent more time doing tricks with his bike than listening to Ahmed's tips.
The big race day finally arrived.
"Now the real fun begins," Ryan said excitedly as he sat at the starting line.
"You need to get serious," Ahmed warned. "Cyclocross can be dangerous."
Bang! The starting gun went off. The boys rushed off the starting line. Ryan saw the first obstacle ahead. It was a series of small hurdles (障碍).
"Here I go!" Ryan shouted when he reached the hurdles. He jumped off his bike and landed hard on his foot. Next, he had to get his bike onto his shoulder. Ryan could not remember what Ahmed said about shouldering the bike. He tried to pick it up by the wheels but it dropped. Finally, he got his bike off the ground. As he ran, the bike's weight pressed down on his shoulder, and he lost his balance, unable to stay on his feet. Before he knew it, he was lying face-down in the mud.
"Are you okay?" Ryan heard his friend ask. Ahmed reached down to help Ryan. Ryan was thankful that Ahmed cared more about him than about the race. He caught Ahmed's hand and stood.
"Ouch!" Ryan cried. It hurt to put weight on his ankle. "You were right, Ahmed. Cyclocross is about more than strength and speed. Can we spend a few more months training together? I want to finish my next cyclocross race!"
(1)、Why does the writer talk about Ryan's practice in Paragraph 3?A、To introduce the safety rules of cyclocross. B、To imply why Ryan lost his cyclocross race.
