Where can you learn about the cultural relics (文物) of our country? You may visit museums or read books, but now a CCTV show may give you a more fun way to learn about them.

The show is called National Treasure and it shows 27 treasures from 9 museums across China. In order to make ancient culture relics come alive, the show uses different ways to make sense (意义) of the story, history and culture behind them.

Although it's a show about old relics, it looks modern and technical. An IMAX-sized LED screen shows the treasures.

The treasures are introduced by national (国家的) treasure keepers. The show invites famous actors to be national treasure keepers, and they act out the stories. The actors even use the funny words to make their performances interesting and alive. "Our show invited famous people so that the show can reach more people. As the actors try to find out more about these treasures, the audience (观众) will follow them on a journey," said Yu Lei, producer (监制人) and director (导演) of the show. For example, actor Wang Kai played Emperor Qianlong on the show. The audience loved his performances.

The show has become widely popular with its interesting stories, good performances and funny words. It has helped more people know ancient cultural relics and has encouraged more people to visit museums.

Twelve-year-old Zhou Xinyue planned the May Day holiday trip for her family. Instead of going to the beach, she chose four revolutionary sites(革命遗址) in South China's Guangdong province.

"I have heard my classmates talking about the East River Column, but I don't know much about its history, so I wanted to visit the memorial(纪念馆) to learn about it. My parents and elder brother were happy to join me," she said.

Revolutionary sites have become a travel hit during the May Day holiday. As of 3 pm on Saturday, the first day of the five day holiday, 13 "red tourism(红色旅游)" sites in Guangdong received 23, 000 visits, up by 298.9 percent year on year, according to the provincial culture and tourism department(省文化旅游厅).

The department recently introduced a "red tourism" passport, which includes 30 revolutionary sites in the province and covers, technologies and treasure finding games. The passport has attracted many young people to these sites during the holiday.

"The visit was good, and I have set a goal to visit all the sites and get all the stamps in my red tourism passport this year," said Xu Sheng, a visitor to the peasant movement institute(农民运动研究所) in Guangzhou.

In Shaoshan, Central China's Hunan province, the hometown of late Chairman Mao Zedong, visits queued in line to visit the former house of Mao.

Visitors also took photos on the Mao Zedong Square, decorated with flowers and written with the words "Centenary of the Communist Party of China(中国共产党百年诞辰)".

According to the Travel Go online platform, the number of fights to red tourism destinations during the Qingming Festival and May Day holiday this year was 15.6% of all fights booked. It is an increase of 4% compared with the same period in 2019.

To celebrate the centenary of the Communist Party of China, the culture and tourism authorities in Shanghai and East China's provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui also offered a series of red tourism—themed activities.

Yan'an, a city rich in revolutionary resources in Northwest China's Shannxi province, designed ten red tourism routes for the May Day holiday. Dance performances and shows are staged in a red tourism—themed train heading for Yan'an.

Ellyse Perry is one of Australia's greatest women cricketers（板球运动员）. She shares her ideas about having dreams and how to achieve them. 

In Perry's opinion, a dream has to be realistic（现实的）. It has to be something you can actually do. "When I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a musician and giving concerts to people from all over the world. But that's not realistic because I'm not good at it," Perry said.

Finally, Perry tells us that confidence（自信心）is what gets you through the hardest moments. "While facing problems, don't lose heart. Always have confidence in yourself and believe in yourself. When you believe you can, you really can," she said.

Right now, you probably spend most of your time in school. Do you wonder what you are going to do after high school? Will you continue schooling? Will you learn a trade? Maybe it is time to think about your choices and to prepare for them. Someday work will be a big part of your life.

What kind of job would be right for you? Think about your interests and your skills. You may like to listen to music, dance, or work with computers. You may know how to drive a car. Knowing both your interests and skills will help make a better plan for your career.

Roberta Zhan, an art designer, likes her job because it allows her to use her interests and skills. She took art, design, and computer lessons, and also learned about taking photos on her own.

Wind power is a very clean source of energy. This is how wind power works. Wind makes windmills spin(旋转). When the windmills spin, they make electricity. Then we can use the electricity.

A lot of people think that wind power is new, but that's not true. For thousands of years, people have used wind to sail boats and move water. We still do those things today, but these days we mostly use wind power to make electricity.

Wind power is a very popular source of energy. Most people think that we should use it more and more. First of all, it's clean. Wind mills don't pollute the environment at all. Second, we can use wind power forever. After all, we will always have wind. Also, wind power is cheap, and it's getting even cheaper.

The modern world runs on energy. However, in the past human society used very little energy like wind, water and fire could provide. There are many different ways to create energy, but some ways are harmful to the environment.

Fossil fuels (化石燃料) are the most common kind of energy. They include coal, oil, and natural gas. First, people have to dig them from the ground.  However, scientists are creating cleaner and better ways to do that these days. So the environment is not harmed as much as before. But when people burn these fossil fuels, they can give off a lot of harmful gases, which is considered to be one of the greatest causes of global warming. This might harm the environment.

Tidal (潮汐) energy is another way to make electricity. It uses the ocean tides to make electricity. But some kinds of tidal energy can kill many fishes and other sea animals. Also dams(堤坝) can create lakes and lots of clean energy, but they change the way that rivers run. 

Nuclear energy is a very powerful form of energy.  However, many people are afraid of it because there have been some very serious accidents in the past which caused great harm both to humans and nature.  Many countries are starting to use nuclear energy more.

 Whatever kind of energy we use, it should be good for people and environment.

ChatGPT is back in the headlines! OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot, has now introduced a powerful new language model: GPT-4.

On March 14, GPT-4 showed the world how smarter it is than the previous GPT-3.5. One of its best new features is that it can understand pictures. For example, if you show a picture of a phone using the wrong charger (充电器), GPT-4 can tell why the picture looks strange or funny.

But GPT-4's developments don't stop there. The new language model can code (用代码编写) classic games in a matter of minutes, and produce the code and layout for a website based on a hand-made drawing. It can also change the tone and style based on what you ask it to do. GPT-4 is much better than the older GPT at passing tests, which may worry teachers. According to CNN, GPT-4 did really well on a law school test, with a score in the top 10 percent of test takers. But GPT-3.5 only got a score in the bottom 10 percent.

GPT-4 will also see greater use as a tool to power other apps and services. For example, the language learning app Duolingo plans to use GPT-4 in their upcoming Duolingo Max function. Users can learn language by talking with AI. Another app, Be My Eyes, will have a digital assistant to help blind people better understand the world around them. The government of Iceland also plans to use GPT-4 to protect the Icelandic language.

There are still problems with the new language model, however. GPT-4 still struggles to get completely correct answers, especially with newer information after September 2021. GPT-4 also sometimes "hallucinates (产生幻觉)", meaning that it will insist that wrong information is true.

There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today—the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances.

For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn't have to explore much anymore. They began to work instead to make life better. 

In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today.

The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter（直升机） in 1909. Movies with sound in 1926. The computer in 1928. And jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon came in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear. 

By this time most people had a very good life. Man has a desire to explore again. The world was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space.

In 1969, the man took his biggest step from the earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning thought. New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.

Waste sorting (分类) is important. It is environment-friendly and helps to save resources. Now, more and more Chinese people are starting to sort out the rubbish before throwing it away. We are glad to see some fine examples.

However, it is not easy for everyone to do this. Some people may spend so much time deciding the kind of their rubbish. Luckily, twin sisters Chu Siyu and Chu Siqi from Beijing Huiwen No. 1 Primary School developed an app to help solve the problem.

The app is easy to use. When users need to throw away their rubbish, they open the app first. In the app, they can find the names of different rubbish. Then, they choose a kind of rubbish in the app, and the right rubbish bin will open. This not only helps users to do waste sorting quickly but also allows them to throw away their rubbish without touching the bin. It is more sanitary (卫生的).

The app also makes use of speech recognition (语音识别) technology. With the help of this technology, users can just speak out the name of the rubbish, and then the rubbish bin will open. How helpful!

Waste sorting isn't really difficult, and we just need time to get familiar with it. Of course, technology can help us to do it better. If we can do it together, we can help save our planet.

The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for elderly people in China. The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar (农历的) calendar. As the Chinese word for nine has the same sound as the word for long, people take the Double Ninth Festival to show their wishes of long life for elderly people. This year it falls on October 23rd. 

There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, families get together and climb mountains for luck and in the hope that elderly people will live much longer. They also drink chrysanthemum wine (菊花酒) and wear a plant called "zhuyu" to celebrate it . Both chrysanthemum and "zhuyu" are considered as clean plants that can clean houses and treat (治疗) diseases. 

It is a traditional virtue (美德) in China to respect elderly people. Respecting elderly people is shown not only on this special day but also in daily life. For example, when an older person enters a room, everyone stands up. When there are several guests at the table, the host usually introduces them from the oldest to the youngest. When a younger person is presenting something to an older person, two hands are used. On a crowded subway or bus, younger people always offer their seats to elderly people. Chinese people believe that to respect the elderly people is to respect themselves tomorrow.

How important is music? Many people usually think that listening to music is nice, but not very important. It is often only thought to be entertainment, but not the necessary choice for education. This opinion is wrong. 

Music tells us who we are. Music reflects the musicians' thoughts and ideas, and the social environment they lived in. For example, Mozart's music represents(代表) a lifestyle, and rock music also represents a lifestyle.  He introduced jazz into his music.

 Science explains how the sun rises and sets. Music explores(探索)emotional(情绪的)meanings. People need to use every possible way to learn about our world.

For a long time, China was isolated (隔离) from the rest of the ancient world due to natural barriers. The Himalayan Mountains lie to the west and the Gobi Desert to the north. To the south are more mountains and seas. To the east lies the great Pacific Ocean that stretches all the way to the west coast of the United States. So Chinese culture developed all by itself.

We know the Chinese had a written language as early as 1500 BC． That is when the Shang dynasty ruled northern China. You can see that Chinese writıng is very different from the writing in other countries. The Chinese use a different character for each word. People in many countries have to learn only 26 letters, but people in China have to memorize about 600 characters before they can do basic reading and writing.

Many inventions were made and used in China before the rest of the world even heard of them. Around the time of Christ, the Chinese were making silk, porcelain (瓷器) and paper. By this time, the Chinese did trade with other people. Chinese silk was in great demand, even in Europe.

By 600 AD, the Chinese had invented printing and used printing presses (印刷机). A few centuries later, they made the magnetic compass (指南针), which was a great help to sailors. A compass can tell north from south, and enabled the great journeys of discovery.

The Chinese were the first to discover how to make explosive powder, the kind that we use both for gunpowder and for fireworks.

From all this, you can see that the Chinese may have been isolated from other people. However, they were very busy making things that the rest of the world found really exciting and helpful when people learnt about them.

When I was a little girl, I liked to listen to my father telling his childhood stories. The image of him and his friends climbing to the top of a tree to get a bird's nest hung in my mind for quite a while. I dreamed of peeking (窥视) into a bird's nest that had eggs or small baby birds inside, like my father often did when he was a boy. 

But that was almost impossible. First, youngsters today are not allowed to climb trees. People think it is too dangerous. Second, we don't have so many birds' nests around anymore. The healthy eco-system (生态系统) of Dad's youth is slowly disappearing. 

However, one day, my dream came true. It was a Saturday morning. My dad's best friend, who I call Uncle Ben, invited us to visit his business. He sold used cars at his shop outside the city. There were a lot of trees around it. Uncle Ben led us through the parking lot, pointing out all kinds of different cars — different makes (品牌), models, years and prices. As we walked across the lot, we suddenly found something unusual —a bird's nest on top of the back wheel of a big truck!

I was excited to be so close. I looked at the nest in amazement. It was real —a real bird's nest with a few eggs sitting inside. The nest looked strong and warm. How smart the little bird was to make such a pretty nest. And how creative it was to build the nest on the wheel for shelter (庇护) in this cold Canadian weather!

Uncle Ben took a look at the eggs. He said it was a robin's (知更鸟的) nest. To protect the nest from being harmed, he suggested that we move it to a tree beside the parking lot. 

We all sincerely hoped that the robin found her new home and her baby birds.

Smart Schoolbag
