Our school set up a Voluntary Work Club last term to encourage students to help people in need. At first, only a few students joined the club, because many of them didn't know what to do or how to start.  The teachers in the club gave us a lot of advice and told us that voluntary work is not as hard as we thought.

We first planned to visit the children's hospital near our school.  We prepared some storybooks, toys and hand-made cards for the sick children. When we got there, we read stories to them, played games with them and taught them to draw pictures. Their smiles made us feel warm and happy.

After that, we did more voluntary activities: we helped the elderly in the community clean their homes, we picked up litter in the park, and we taught English to the children from poor families.  Now the club has over 100 members, and more and more students want to join us.

 It not only helps people in need, but also makes us grow into better people. We learn to care for others, work with our teammates and understand the meaning of life. We believe that kindness is the most beautiful language in the world.

Kindness is not about doing big things but it's about doing small things with a warm heart. Emily is a 15-year-old girl from Canada, and she has been helping homeless animals for three years. When she was 12, she found a sick cat on her way home. She took it to the animal hospital and looked after it until it got better. Since then, she has made it her duty to help homeless dogs and cats.

Emily doesn't have much money, so she does small things to help: she makes food for the animals with her pocket money, she cleans their living places in the animal shelter, and she takes photos of them and posts them online to find new owners for them. So far, she has helped over 20 animals find their new homes.

Emily's story has inspired many of her classmates. They join Emily to help the animals, and they call themselves "the Little Animal Helpers". Emily says, "I don't think I'm doing anything great. I just hope that every animal can have a warm home. And I believe that if everyone does a little kindness, the world will be much better."

Blood donation is a silent way to help others, and it's easy for most healthy adults to do. But many people still have wrong ideas about it. Some think donating blood will make them weak, and others believe it's harmful to their health. In fact, these ideas are all wrong.

Doctors say that a healthy adult who weighs over 50kg can donate 200-400ml of blood every six months. This amount of blood is only a small part of the body's total blood, and the body will make new blood in a short time. What's more, regular blood donation can help the body update blood cells and reduce the risk of some blood diseases.

World Blood Donor Day is on June 14th every year. It aims to tell people the importance of blood donation and thank all blood donors. In many cities, there are blood donation buses on the street on that day, and many people line up to donate blood. Some of them are young people, even teenagers who are over 18. They say it's a special way to celebrate their birthday or just to do something for society.

When 14-year-old Lin Tao saw an old man fall down on the street, he didn't hesitate to help. He called the old man's family and stayed with him until the ambulance arrived. Later, the old man's son thanked him with a gift, but Lin Tao refused it. "I just did what I should do," he said.

Lin Tao is a member of his school's "Kindness Club", which was set up last year. The club has over 80 members, and they do different voluntary work every month: they help clean the community park, read stories to children in the hospital, and buy daily things for the lonely elderly. Lin Tao says the club teaches him that kindness is a circle. When you help others, they will pass the kindness on to someone else.

Last month, the club organized a book donation activity for a primary school in a mountain village. They collected over 500 books, and the students there sent them a thank-you video. "Watching the video made me feel so proud," Lin Tao said. "I realize that helping others is the happiest thing in the world."

Voluntary work is more than just giving a hand to others and it's a way to build a warmer society. A recent survey among middle school students in Shanghai shows that 68% of teenagers have taken part in at least one voluntary activity, but only 32% keep doing it regularly. Some students say they quit because they have no enough time, while others think their small efforts can't make a real difference.

However, volunteers from a community service center tell a different story. They say even a simple smile or a short talk can light up the life of people in need. For example, visiting the elderly once a month can make them feel less lonely, and teaching primary school students to read can help them build confidence in learning. What's more, voluntary work also helps teenagers grow in that they learn to care for others, work with teammates and understand the meaning of responsibility.

The survey also finds that schools and families play a key role in encouraging students to do voluntary work. When schools organize more voluntary activities and parents set a good example, more teenagers are willing to join in and stick to it.

A school newspaper is a great place for students to practice writing and share ideas. Our school started one last term, and it has become very popular among us.

Last month, the newspaper club held a meeting to choose new members. I 1 to join them because I love writing. There were about twenty students at the meeting. The teacher asked us to write a short passage in fifteen minutes.

When I finished, I handed in my paper and waited for the result. Three days later, I received an email. It said I was one of the new writers. I was so excited that I told my parents the good news at 2 .

My first job was to write a report about the school sports meeting. I took a notebook and a camera. During the meeting, I interviewed some players and took many photos. I also 3 notes carefully.

Maya, a 14-year-old girl from the US, loves collecting postcards. She has over 200 postcards from more than 30 countries. Some are from her friends who travel abroad, and others she buys from online shops. "Every postcard has a story. Some show beautiful places, and some have interesting stamps. When I look at them, I feel like I'm traveling around the world," Maya says. She dreams of visiting these places in the future.

Both Luca and Maya agree that their hobbies help them in many ways. Hobbies can help us relax, learn new skills, and even make new friends. So why not take up a hobby today?

Last year, I was under a lot of 1 . I had too much homework and I felt tired every day. My mom noticed that I was not happy. She said, "Why don't you 2 a hobby? It might help you relax."
