Cotton or plastic: which kind of bag is better for the environment? Many of us would naturally say that the cotton bag is best, but that might only be true if you use that bag thousands of times. 

There is no doubt that plastic is harmful for the environment in many ways. Thrown-away plastic can sit and stay for centuries, pollute the sea, cause harm to wildlife or break down into polluting microplastics. 

Because of these factors, many people are looking for ways to reduce their plastic use. However, itˈs not as easy as they think. Itˈs certainly more biodegradable（可降解）than plastic, but this might be only advantage. The production of cotton requires far more energy, water and so on. As the bags are heavier, transporting them will lead to higher carbon emissions. An article from Columbia University suggests that cotton shopping bags need to be used over 7,000 times before they are more valuable than plastic ones. 

Lightweight plastic in cars and planes help reduce oil use and emissions. If we didn't use so much plastic in clothing and footwear, we need plenty of land, water and other things for enough natural products. The fact that plastic lasts for centuries is what causes much of the environmental harm, but it also means it can be used to make things that can be re-used again and again. Plastic can cause serious harm to the environment, and efforts to throw less of it away can reduce this. Re-using it more could be one way to achieve this. 

Americans will long remember President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. 

At the age of 19, Abraham Lincoln took a boat down the Ohio River to New Orleans. There Lincoln saw for the first time slaves being sold in the marketplace. At that time, Lincoln made up his mind to work to end slavery for the rest of his life. 

In 1836, Lincoln became a lawyer and was famous for being hard-working and honest. He believed that the US stood for freedom for all. He wanted to become a senator (参议员）. In 1858, Lincoln debated (争论）against Stephen Douglas who was also a candidate for the Senate from Illinois. 

Because of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, Lincoln became known across the country. Then he decided to run for the presidency in 1860. At last he ran against Stephen Douglas and two other candidates. 

Lincoln took the oath (誓言）of office to become president of the United States on March 4, 1861. It was a difficult time to be president. Many southern states did not agree with Lincoln about canceling slavery, and declared that they were no longer part of the US. The famous Civil War began in April, 1861. 

Lincoln's Union Army fought the Southern Confederate Armies. Many soldiers were killed in the battles. One of the battles took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In 1863, a ceremony was held to memorize the dead on the Gettysburg battlefield. Lincoln made a famous speech known as the Gettysburg Address. 

Unfortunately, Lincoln was shot while watching a play at Ford's Theatre and passed away on the morning of April 15, 1865. 

Laughter can help us be free from pain and increase our endurance(忍耐力). A study at 2011 Oxford University showed that telling a joke to a friend can help us do more exercise at the gym or go farther on our daily walk. 

Joking around is also good for our social life. Compared with staying alone, a person is more likely to laugh when he is staying with other people. When someone starts laughing, everyone else laughs too, even if they're not sure why he is laughing. 

Sophie Scott, a British scientist, believes that when we laugh, we are making and keeping social connections. They are very important for our health, because keeping connections with people around can make us healthier and live longer. Those who feel more connected to others have less depression, and are better at understanding others. 

Dr. Caspar Addyman, psychologist at the University of London, said babies naturally understand the importance of sharing laughter. "Babies can make you laugh and you can make them laugh" he said. "It's all about connection. "  Laughter means that we are part of a group and we like them. 

So, spending time with people we care about is the quickest and easiest way to reduce stress and improve our health condition. It's pretty fun, too. 

Mr Hu, a famous mental doctor from Guangzhou once said at an important meeting, "Now many young students can have 1  with their minds. Some students become worried 2  they have to study very hard. Others have trouble  3  on well with people around them like their parents and classmates. Parents and teachers should care more about this problem. "

Then Mr Hu gave some examples. One patient, a middle school student from Xiamen was doing 4  in his lessons. He thought his teachers and friends often 5  at him, and he became so nervous and worried that one night he left his home without telling his 6 . Another student, a 14-year-old schoolgirl from Guangzhou, was very afraid of exams. While she was reading the exam paper, she couldn't 7  anything to write. 

A recent report from Guangzhou Daily says about 18% of the young students in Guangzhou have mental problems. They often felt worried and very 8 . Unluckily many of them won't go and ask for help. Some think they will look stupid if they go to see a doctor. 9  won't talk about their secrets.

Second, we should open the windows more often. Don't turn on the air- conditioner all day. In this way, we can have the fresh air and save the energy. 

Third, we should enjoy cooking at home and having meals at our dinner table. So we can use our own bowls and chopsticks, not the plastic ones. 

Fourth, we should spend our weekends and holidays in the park playing games or just riding a bike around. 

Fifth, we should learn how to make good use of old things in the house, in the garden, or in the kitchen. 

Lastly, no one really has a mountain or a sea. Don't throw rubbish here and there. 

All in all, saving the Earth could be easy. Let's take actions to protect the Earth.
