Help kids learn and grow.Be a big brother or a big sister at an after-school care center.

Dear Peter, 

I'm glad to tell you about my experiences in learning first aid and doing volunteer work. I'm a student in Grade Eight. Our school held a professional first aid training last month, which was different from the basic one we had before. A doctor from the local hospital who has rich experience in emergency treatment came to teach us. He not only told us how to deal with common accidents, like nosebleeds, burns and falls, but also showed us how to give CPR to someone who can't breathe or has a heart attack. He even let us practice on mannequins, which made the training more practical and useful. Now I can not only help people around me if they have small accidents but also deal with some simple emergencies. 

I also joined the school volunteer club, which organizes different kinds of volunteer activities every month. Every weekend, we go to the community to help people in need. We help the old people do housework, like cleaning rooms, washing clothes and buying food. We also help the disabled kids with their studies and teach them some simple skills to help them live independently. Sometimes we organize activities to collect old books, clothes and toys for the poor children in the countryside. Every time I see the smiles on their faces, I feel very happy and realize that volunteering is a meaningful thing. 

Our school has some strict rules for volunteers. We must be polite and patient to everyone we help. We can't give up easily even when we meet difficulties. We must try our best to help others and respect their feelings. I think these rules are good for us. They help us become better people and learn how to take responsibility. I hope you can also join a volunteer group and experience the happiness of helping others. Please write to me soon and tell me about your experiences.

Do you know that taking good care of gardens can be a way of doing charity? That's what the National Garden Scheme (NGS) (国家花园计划) has been doing. The organization opens over 3,500 private(私人的) gardens in England and Wales for people to visit, and raises money through tickets, tea and cakes.

The NGS has a rich and interesting history. At a meeting in 1926, Miss Elsie Wagg came up with the idea of raising money for district (地区) nursing through the nation's obsession (沉迷) with gardening. A year later the NGS began to work and garden owners were asked to open their gardens for "a shilling (先令) a head". As a result, 609 gardens opened and a total of £8,191 was raised that year.

During the past century, the number of gardens grew, so the NGS was able to help more charities with a larger amount of money. Thanks to the kindness of garden owners, volunteers and visitors, it has donated a total of £70 million to nursing and health charities so far. It made a donation of £3.5 million in 2024 and about 70 pence (便士) in every £1 (1 pound=100 pence) went straight to organizations like Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen's Institute of Community Nursing.

The National Garden Scheme doesn't just open beautiful gardens for charity. Its Gardens and Health programme also shows people the important role of gardening and gardens in helping open a path to health.

How to Communicate Better

As a student, it's important to learn how to communicate well with others. Good communication can help you make more friends and live a happier school life. Here are some useful tips for you.

First, listen carefully. When someone is talking to you, don't think about other things. Look at him or her and listen to every word. This shows that you are polite and interested in the talk. Second, be brave to speak your mind. If you have different ideas, don't be afraid to share them. But remember to use a friendly tone. Don't shout or talk loudly. Third, learn to understand others. Everyone has different thoughts. Try to put yourself in others' shoes. It will help you avoid many arguments.

Finally, always be honest. Honesty is the best policy. People like to make friends with those who tell the truth. If you follow these tips, you will find it easy to get on well with your classmates, teachers and parents. Communication is a skill. The more you practice it, the better you will be at it.

Jason is an online doctor who works for a nonprofit organization (非营利性组织). His main job is to give free medical advice to families who can't afford (负担得起) regular healthcare.
