  • 7、At the break of day, Ehemat Tohti, a 55-year-old electrical (电气的) worker and his workmates prepared their equipment and embarked on their journey into the heart of the Taklimakan Desert, China's largest desert (沙漠), to begin a day of patrolling (巡逻).

They are responsible for checking and fixing a 220kV transmission line (输电线) crossing this desert, also known as the "Sea of Death". "We need to cross the desert once a month to check the 729 transmission towers in order to ensure the power supply (供电) for counties and villages along the Taklimakan. The work is challenging, yet meaningful," Ehemat Tohti said.

In the fall, at noon, the desert's surface is still hot, while the temperature between morning and evening has changed greatly. "Now the temperature difference between morning and evening is about 20℃. It was cold when we set off. As we went further, the temperature grew, only to fall down again in the evening. So it's necessary to take both heavy and light clothing," he said.

Since most of the route was impossible to reach by car, they needed to travel by motorcycle and on foot for their work. Walking through the desert was difficult. "The harsh environment is not only unbearable for people, but also can easily cause breakdowns of their motorcycles. Moreover, the hidden roots of red willow and Populus euphratica trees, buried under the sand, often puncture the tires, making an unseen danger," he said.

"The desert is beautiful, but it's also unpredictable. So you don't know what you're going to meet," he added. They face lots of challenges during their patrols, including floods, swamps, and meeting wild animals such as boars and foxes.

Luckily, in 2022, drones (无人机) came to help their patrol work. "Human workers can patrol up to about 20 power towers a day, but with the help of drones, we can cover nearly 100 towers." Ehemat Tohti also said that he didn't plan to retire. "I want to share my experience and skills with more people and keep learning more knowledge."

A、many people have died there B、the desert is large and famous C、their work is dangerous but important D、it's hard to build a transmission line there
(2)、What do Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly talk about?

A、It's 20℃ below zero in the fall evening in the desert. B、Workers' motorcycles often can't work for many reasons. C、There are fewer than 729 transmission towers in the desert. D、Electrical workers have to take either heavy or light clothing.
(4)、The underlined word "unpredictable" in Paragraph 5 means "________" in the passage.
A、it's impossible to meet any human there B、they need drones to help their patrol work C、there are many animals living in the desert D、it's hard to tell what will happen in the desert

  • 8、Each of us has dreams and goals for our future. Our personal dream and clear goal makes us study hard and make progress each day.

But why do you have dreams and goals, you still end up with nothing? The differences between successful people and the dreamers is their persistent (锲而不舍的) action (行动). When you find some of your lessons very hard, you must try, keep trying and not give up.

This is the famous formula (公式) for success:

    Dream > Believe > Achieve

Most people have what they want (Dream) and they think they can realize their dreams (Believe). But they do nothing. They just imagine their dreams can come true.

I believe that if you really want to make your dream come true, you have to add one thing to your success formula:

    Dream > Believe > Act > Achieve

For me, act is the most important thing for success and that's to Take Persistent Action (Act). If you say, "I can't do it" and give up, you can never do anything successful. However, "I'll try" may give you a surprise. There will beobstacles in our life. We must try to solve (解决) them. Most successful people made their dreams come true because of their persistent action.

Please remember: Persistent Action can make your dream come true.

(1)、What should you do when you find your lessons very hard?
A、Ask people for help. B、Try and keep trying. C、Do nothing. D、Look for a harder one.
(2)、What is the most important thing for success according to the writer?
    A、Act. B、Achieve. C、Connect. D、Believe.
(3)、What does the underlined word "obstacles" mean?
    A、Fears. B、Imaginations. C、Choices. D、Difficulties.
(4)、Why does the writer use the formula "Dream > Believe > Act > Achieve"?
A、To support his idea. B、To remember a formula. C、To show what his goals are. D、To introduce a dream.
(5)、Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A、Doing Something successful B、Studying Hard and Making Progress C、Realizing Dreams with Persistent Action D、Having personal dreams and clear goals

  • 19、There once was a man who went to India. He had never been to India before. And when he got there, he saw a lot of fruit. In India, they have plenty of fruit to sell, but much of it is expensive because they can't grow much since the weather is dry. Then he saw a big basket of some very red, long fruit. And it was the cheapest in the shop.

He bought a whole kilogram of the fruit and started eating it. But after he ate some of it: Oh, my God! His eyes watered, his eyes were burning, and his face became red. He jumped up and down, saying, "Ah! Ah! Ah!"

But he still continued to eat the fruit! Some people who were looking at him shook their heads and said, "You're crazy, man. Those are chilies. You can't eat so many; they're not good for you!" But the stupid man said, "No, I can't stop! I paid money for them, and now I'll eat them. It's my money!"

Similarly, we sometimes do a lot of things like that. We spend money or time on a business or job. Although we know there's no more hope that we can do well in the work in the future, we still continue just because we've spent money, time, and love into it. But in fact, even if you've lost something, let it go and move on. That's better than continuing to lose.

(1)、Why are fruits very expensive in India?

(2)、How many chilies did the man buy?

(3)、What happened to the man after eating some of the chilies?

(4)、Why did the man go on eating chilies?

  • 20、Nobody wants to lose, but we must accept that losing is a part of life. After all, we can't win all the time. However, we can learn something valuable from every failure(失败). This may help us succeed in the future. So we must know how to be a good loser.

We must not be afraid of losing. When we lose, just take it with a smile and look on the bright side of it. Failure can't be avoided in our life. Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb(灯泡). When he was asked how he felt, he said that he hadn't failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things which didn't work. We must know that history is full of examples of men and women who achieved success although they failed many times.

Losing is not very disgraceful. We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of it. Remember that it can be helpful. Take action to walk out of it. When we lose, think about what we did and how we can improve. If someone else can help, we'll be lucky enough. Maybe he or she has been through the same experience before. Many people enjoy helping others solve problems. This can save us a lot of time in learning how to avoid the same mistakes in the future.

We should face our failure when we lose. There is only one winner in every competition. Some win, while some lose. That is a usual way of life. If we offer our congratulations(祝贺)to the winners and share in their happiness, we won't feel sorry for our failure.

In a word, being a good loser will help us to succeed in life. It might be painful at the beginning, but there are many advantages. Good losers set examples to us, and most importantly, they finally win.

(1)、What can we learn from every failure according to the text?
A、A way of life. B、A valuable thing. C、A general rule. D、A secret of success.
(2)、In the writer's eyes, why did Edison achieve success?
A、He got help from others. B、He happened to make it. C、He avoided possible mistakes. D、He saw the bright side of losing.
(3)、What does the underlined word "disgraceful" probably mean?
    A、Bad. B、Personal. C、Dangerous. D、Interesting.
(4)、What does the writer advise the losers to do in a competition?
A、Express the regrets. B、Forget the failure. C、Share in the winners' enjoyment. D、Join in another competition.
(5)、What is the best title for the text?
A、Ideas about How to Avoid Mistakes B、Experience in Dealing with Problems C、Advice on How to Be a Good Loser D、Advantages of both Success and Failure
