Nearly 2，000 years ago，a huge volcano erupted （火山喷发） in the south of Italy. Within one day，it covered the whole city of Pompeii （庞贝古城）. It destroyed the houses and killed thousands of people immediately. Last summer，my dad and I visited Pompeii. Dad said it would be good research for my history project about the ancient Romans （古罗马人）. That's why we decided to visit. At first，I felt bored. But when we got there，I was really amazed at this view. 

The city looks just like it did in ancient Roman times. There are houses and shops. The ash covered people，animals，and objects，turning them to stone. Everything looks exactly the same as it did when the ash hit. You can also see normal objects that they used every day，like bread，bottles，and cooking utensils （厨房用具）. These things show us how people lived long ago. I was surprised that their life was so similar to ours. 

I was amazed at the stone figures of the people，but later I felt very sad for these people. They were doing normal things when the disaster happened. Those people must have felt so scared at that time. 

Life was hard for the Chinese farmers who lived near the Yellow River. Over the past few hundred years，the river1 China's Great Plain more than 1，500 times. People suffered2 in each flood. Many of them died，and those who3 were left with nothing. 

In September 1887，it was a4 month. The river began to rise，and people feared it would break its banks （岸），5 no one was willing to leave. It was their home where their family members and6 had lived together for hundreds of years. And it was harvest time （收获季节）. They would7 hunger if they didn't harvest their crops （庄稼） soon. The rain continued to fall，and the river rose8 . Some farmers harvested the crops. Others built dikes （堤） to9 against the flood.

My Healthy Life

To help sick people around the world, scientists keep making new medicines (药) every year. Before giving any new medicine to people, they always test it to make sure it's safe and useful. For many years, scientists have used animals for such medical tests.. Small animals like mice often help scientists with this important work.

But using animals for such tests can bring problems. Firstly, animals can suffer (遭受) from illnesses and possible side-effects (副作用) of medicines. Secondly, animals' bodies work differently from people's. Some medicine may be safe for people but bad for animals. And some medicine may work well on animals but cannot help people at all. Thirdly, these tests can cost much money and take a long time. So scientists are trying their best to find better ways.

Now we have two great helpers. One is AI. It is very clever and can work very fast. With its help, scientists can spend much less time on tests. The other is small man-made body parts on chips (芯片). They work just like real parts of human body, so scientists can make sure the medicines work on humans. With these new ways, scientists can make useful medicine more quickly and keep small animals safe at the same time.

The spinning top (陀螺) is a traditional Chinese toy with a long history. Playing tops is not only fun but also good for our health.

A long time ago, there lived a lazy boy in small village. One day, the father decided (teach) his son a lesson. He took a piece of wood  made it into a round shape. After that, he put a small hard tip at the bottom. He called this toy "top". He  (show) his son how to play it with a whip (鞭子). The boy found it very  (interest). But the top soon fell down. The father said, "Life  (be) like this top. If you stop working hard, it will fall." The boy kept practicing. After three months, he became very good playing it. People all came to learn from  (he). Later, this toy became popular in nearby villages.

Very hot weather can be dangerous.  So, in hot months, more people go to the hospital because of breathing (呼吸) problems. Hot weather also causes 20% more heart problems in cities.

Air pressure can affect our sleep. Before storms, low (低的) air pressure causes poor sleep. People sleep half an hour less than usual. 

Weather can affect how we learn.  A study shows when classroom temperatures are too high, students' maths marks drop. Another study says that getting enough sunlight can help old people remember things better.

Rainy days make about 30% of people feel sad, but snow makes about 25% of people happy. Warm days around 20℃ with a light wind make most people feel relaxed.

Weather is not just about being hot or cold.  Knowing about weather changes is important for our health, studies and feelings.

Some people take a morning shower to wake up. An evening shower, however, can help your body relax and get ready for sleep, especially if you turn off or turn down the lights. It is called "dark showering" and is getting popular online. Then, how can dark showering get us prepared for sleep?

Light affects how we sleep. When we open our eyes in the morning, sunlight lets our brain know it is time to wake up. As day turns to night, our brain makes a special thing called melatonin. It makes us feel sleepy. Bright light at night lowers (降低) the level (水平) of melatonin. A dark room, however, raises melatonin and helps the body get ready for sleep. This is why "dark showering" may help us fall asleep more easily.

Temperature is important for sleep, too. A warm shower raises our body temperature for a short time. After the shower, our bodies cool down quickly. This change in temperature is like what happens naturally before sleep. So a warm shower before bed can help us get ready for sleep.

Dark showering can also relax our minds. When the lights are less bright, there's less (更少的) to see. Our brain gets less information, so it can calm down (冷静). With fewer things around, we can focus more on other things. We might notice the warm water on our skin. We might listen to the sound of the shower. Focusing on these things can help us relax.

For many people, "dark showering" can be a calm way to end the day and get ready for sleep. If you want to try it, remember to take care when getting in and out of the shower.

Do you love cute and lovely animals? Do you want to enjoy yourself and help animals in need at the same time? If your answer is yes, come and join our volunteer (志愿者) activities! We hope more people can care for and protect animals together.

We have many different easy volunteer jobs for you to choose from. At the Horse Sanctuary, you need to feed horses carefully and clean their living areas every day. At the Buddy Center, we need people to walk dogs. You will help take dogs outside for walks and try your best to help them find loving homes. At the Cat Care Center, cat care helper will play with lovely cats, feed those shy but sweet little cats, and keep their small beds clean and tidy. Wildlife Garden volunteers will plant flowers and make bird food boxes to make our town a safe and nice home for birds and insects.

We also hold a special fun run to raise money for animals. People can choose to run 2 km, 5 km or 7 km. Each runner pays 2 dollars to join in the activity. All the money we raise will be used to help animals. The fun run will be held on April 20 in Central Park. Both kids and grown-ups are welcome to join.

Zhang Lin was a smart student, but he had a bad habit of being late. This often caused him to miss parts of his classes, making his homework difficult to understand. He didn't think it was a big problem, though. Being late also affected his friendships. When his best friend invited him to his birthday party, Zhang Lin showed up late and missed the cake-cutting and some fun games. His friend was unhappy and stopped talking to him for a while.

One day, Zhang Lin joined a singing competition (比赛) in his neighborhood. He had an amazing voice, and he was thrilled when he got into the final round (决赛). His family and friends really hoped he would win. On the day of the final round, Zhang Lin dressed up nicely, had a good breakfast and practiced his song. Before leaving, he decided to play a quick game on his computer. He kept telling his mom, "Just five more minutes!" But those minutes turned into more.

By the time they arrived, it was 5 minutes before the competition. But Zhang Lin couldn't get into the competition hall because all singers had to arrive 15 minutes earlier. Zhang Lin had no choice but to leave, feeling disappointed. Zhang Lin's story tells us that being on time is really important. If you're not on time, you can miss out on something amazing.

The school sports meeting is coming soon. To make it a success, we are looking for student volunteers.

Qiongkushitai is a wonderful small village in Xinjiang. Deep in the , it keeps traditional local culture and thousands of tourists visit it every year.

In morning, sheep and horses walk on green grasslands. Snow-capped mountains, thick forests and clear rivers make the village look like a fairyland (仙境). Local people live in special houses. They use wood to build houses and cover each top grass. This smart way keeps houses in winter and cool in summer. Now, great changes have place here. More local people choose to stay in winter. They turn their houses into homestays (民宿). At the same time, more and more young people return from cities to their businesses. They improve old buildings and create comfortable rooms in the local styles.

The village keeps its own culture while making travel more interesting and special. Some young people design fun such as making handmade soap and counting sheep in traditional ways. Following travelers, some of them live a new "traveling life", moving between scenic spots (旅游景点) in different seasons.

Today, Qiongkushitai mixes old traditions with modern life. The local people live a life than before. The village shines with natural beauty and lively culture.
