Sometimes your body cannot tell the difference between tiredness and hunger. Before eating another snack, drink a bottle of water. You might not be hungry at all—— your body might just need some water.

Floods are happening more often than before. One reason is that the Earth is getting warmer. Warm air holds more water, so rain becomes heavier and storms become stronger. Also, very dry ground cannot take in much water, so rain quickly fills streets and low places. Another problem is rising sea levels. Higher seas mean worse floods near the coast. Big waves push more water onto the land. Scientists say that by 2100, the world may experience very large floods year after year, not just once every 100 years. 

So, what can we do? Early warning system can tell people before floods come, so they have time to get to safe places. Sea walls can help stop floodwater. Some cities are becoming"sponge cities"—— they build parks and special roads to take in rainwater. In some places, moving people away from flood areas may be the best choice. 

Floods are a big challenge. But with good planning and teamwork, we can protect our homes and stay safe.

My Wonderful Life in Grade Eight

Having grown up in England, 14-year-old Mike, whose father is British and mother Chinese, has a special love for food from both cultures. He is comfortable eating either with a knife and fork or a pair of chopsticks. 

However, Mike's parents hold very different ideas on food. For example, chicken feet are common onChinese dinner tables. His mother often asks his father to have a try, but his father always turns down the offer, finding them strange. 

When it comes to roast food, disagreements also appear. Mike's father enjoys cooking a Sunday roast, preparing it with great care and seeing it as a warm family dinner. However, his mother warns that too much roasted food does harm to our health, as it creates too much heat inside the body according to traditionalChinese medicine. 

What makes Mike so different from his parents? Perhaps be didn't fully shape his preferences during childhood. On his first trip to China, he tried many local dishes. Later, he came across grey tofu that looked and smelt like burnt shoes, which he disliked at first. However, he encouraged himself to taste it, and to his surprise, it tasted wonderful. As he ate more, he fell in love with this special snack little by little. 

Since then, Mike has enjoyed food from both cultures, while his parents still keep their own. He finds it truly amazing to enjoy different foods from different countries, and this special experience brings him great fun. For Mike, food is not just about eating —— it's a bridge between two worlds. 

Do You Ever Get" Hangry?" Today, meal delivery services are everywhere. How do you feel while waiting?

You might feel hungry, and sometimes even angry.  The term" hangry" comes from two words: "hungry" and" angry. " It mean getting bad-tempered because you are hungry. 

Is" hanger" just an expression we use for being bad-tempered when we want something to eat?  Scientists will tell you that" hanger" does exist(存在). They have also discovered why people got" hangry". 

When you eat, your body turns foods into sugars. These sugars become a part of your blood and are used for energy.  If it drops low enough, your brain gives off certain hormones(激素). They will increase the amount of sugar in your blood. 

One of these hormones is adrenaline(肾上腺素).  Though getting hungry might not seem all that stressful to you, a rush of adrenaline can make you bad-tempered. 

Do you ever feel "hangry" throughout the day? You can have some healthy snacks to avoid this feeling. 

Recently, the UK's Met Office has done a new study on small talk. It shows that the weather is one of small talk topics among British people. 

British people are so interested in the weather. Their  about the weather starts from a young age. They can talk about the weather with anyone, for example, family, fiend, or even strangers. They  this habit since childhood. Here are some reasons. 

First, the weather in the UK changes . One moment it could be sunny, and then it might rain. The weather can be very different within minutes. This kind of weather is easy people's plans. Because of this, people always have something new to talk about. 

Second, the weather is a safe topic. British people value privacy. They are not  to share personal information. This is a basic rule in British culture. So they seldom talk about  during small talk. A friendly comment on the weather is a safe and relaxing start. 

Third, weather talk builds relationships easily. Two strangers at a bus stop: "Cold wind, isn't it?" The other smiles and agrees. This small talk allows friendly conversations  being overly (过度地)personal. The talk goes on naturally. They keep chatting the bus arrives, and then leave with a smile. Weather talk is a great icebreaker. 

In short, weather talk in the UK is not  about the climate. It is a useful tool for building good relationships and showing politeness. 

Last year, hundreds of people spent good money on an experience that they knew would include crowds (人群), discomfort and danger. Many would become sick, because of the cold and low air pressure, and a few would even lose their lives. But with all these hard things in from of them, by the end of the trip many were already planning to return. For these people, climbing Qomolangma is an experience like no other, making some feel weak and others powerful. 

British mountain climber George Mallory wrote of climbing Qomolangma, "What we get from this adventure is just sheer(纯粹的) joy. . . We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money tobe able to enjoy life. That is what life means and what life is for." Sadly, Mallory would die on the mountain in 1924, although people could not find his body until many years later. Up to now people still don't know whether he successfully reached the top before his death. In 2011, American climber Alan Arnette shared the same opinion. He said tough mountain climbing forces people to look deep inside themselves and carefully check their physical and mental strength to carry on bravely when they strongly feel like giving up. 

Modem science also offers a reasonable explanation for risk-talking. Psychologist(心理学家) Frank Parley calls those who love excitement and challenges"Type T". These risk-takers always think they are skilled and experienced experts. They do not want to die, nor do they expect to die. Research also suggests that our wish to look for risks can be connected to how much we expect to benefit from the result. 

So are the benefits of climbing Qomolangna worth the risks? It's totally up to you. 

Kai had few friends because he spoke slowly. He always sat himself in a1 comer for every meal. His parents worried about him. So when someone gave a 2 to buy Kai a" Companion AI", a small robot for emotional support(支持), his parents thought about giving it a try.
