In 1299, Marco Polo first translated the Chinese character "long" as "dragon" in his book The Travels of Marco Polo. Do you think this is good translation?

Being known (wide) by people, the Chinese dragon and the Western dragon are both animals in mythology (神话). They are similar in some ways. For example, they both have scales and big paws. they also have lots of differences.

The Chinese dragon is made up of parts of some animals, such as a rabbit's eyes and an ox's ears. The dragon is often painted gold. In Chinese mythology, the dragon can fly. It can also spray water from (it) mouth to create rain. The Western dragon, on the other hand, has the body of a snake and the big wings of a bat. The dragon stands for evil and is always beaten by heroes. It breathes fire and is mostly painted in dark colors.

Are you in (agree) that "dragon" matches the cultural meaning of "long" in China? I don't think so. This has to do with the cultural differences China and the West. In Chinese Confucian (儒家的) ideas, kindness and harmony are very (importance). Western culture, however, prefers individual heroism. Whoever beats the bad dragon (be) called a hero, a real fighter.

Over the years, Chinese people (try) to translate "long" in other ways. Zhejiang's Loong Air, for example, writes "long" as "Loong". No matter how "long" (translate), one thing is for sure: The Chinese dragon is a positive image.

Pamela wanted to go to Harvard University, but she was worried about money. Harvard University is a private school, so it is expensive.

Two weeks later, she got an email from Harvard University. It told her what she had got for financial（财政的）help. Pamela did not get as much help as she had hoped for. Nearly 90% of American households use air conditioning, which requires a lot of electricity. In fact, cooling houses accounts for 6% of all electricity use in the USA and costs Americans a lot a year. Preventing houses from overheating is not only better for the environment but will also lower people's cost of electricity.

There are other types of reflective paint, but the new one is the first to focus on mid-infrared (中红外) light, which is a type of light that the human eye cannot see. The special paint works by reflecting up to 80% of the sun's mid-infrared light. That's 10 times more than common paint.

The bottom layer of the paint has metal flakes that work like a mirror to reflect mid-infrared light. The top layer has colourful particles (微粒), which make the paint blue, green, orange, purple, red or yellow. The paint is waterproof and works well in different weather conditions.

In addition to cooling a house in hot summer, the paint can also keep a home warm in winter. When it is used on the indoor walls, it reflects the mid-infrared light back into the room, retaining the indoor warmth. Homes are most often heated by using electricity or natural gas to fire boilers, so reducing that need could save people money on their heating cost too.

According to the paint's creators, using it can reduce the amount of energy it takes to cool a house by nearly 21%. In cold conditions, it can cut the energy needed to warm a room by 36%.

When he left the hospital, Adams decided to become a doctor, so he went to a medical school in Virginia, the USA. But when he was there, he did things in a different way. For example, he didn't like the doctors' white coats, so he wore shirts with flowers on them when he visited his patients and he tried to make them laugh. The doctors at the medical school didn't like Adams because he was too different.

But Adams believed that people in hospital need more than medicine. He saw unhappy and lonely people, and he tried to help them. He spent a lot of time with children in hospital and often dressed up like a clown to make the children laugh. When he finished medical school and became a doctor, Adams opened his own hospital, called "The Gesundheit Institute", together with some other doctors. They wanted it to be a place with a different way of working with sick people.

Hunter Adams became famous during the 1980s, and in 1998, Universal Pictures made a film about his life. It was very successful. In the film (called Patch Adams), Robin Williams played Adams. Williams said, "Adams is a really warm person, who believes that patients need a doctor who is a friend. I enjoyed playing him."

For Mary, she wants to make sure that her new robot doesn't look too much like a human. She wants people to just treat it as a machine-person. If it looks more like a human than a machine, she thinks users might find it a bit creepy and feel afraid. Mary also believes that robot faces don't need to look a lot like ours. Her research shows that we can enjoy communicating with robots whether or not they look like humans, because our brains are able to look for faces. Just put two circles on top of a robot's body, and we will see a face.

Dave feels differently. He believes that although at first we might be afraid when seeing a robot with a life-like face, we may soon get used to it. If robots are going to work closely with humans, they should look as much like us as possible. After all, faces are an important part of the way we communicate.

To make his robots look as much like real people as possible, Dave invented a special skin for their faces. With this skin, robots can show human-like expressions and appear to be angry, sad, happy or surprised. Dave's robots are also programmed to copy expressions. How? Just imagine his robot is looking at you. The cameras in its eyes send pictures of your face to its central computer!
