Fire is common nowadays! No one knows exactly how or when our ancestors first used and learned to control it, but it clearly changed the world.

Experts think that over 400,000 years ago, early humans might have seen lightning start a fire or perhaps someone rubbed(摩擦) two rocks together and the sparks that flew out caused grass to start burning. Either way, fire quickly became very important to human life.

With fire, humans could explore colder places without being limited by the need for warmth. Fire helped early humans survive(生存) by making it easier to live in a difficult environment. Our bodies gradually changed, losing their thick hair because fire could necessarily keep us warm. This change allowed us to hunt during the hottest parts of the day when animals were resting and easier to catch.

Fire also had a deep influence on our social lives. The light that fire provided made people able to stay up later, giving them time to make tools, clothing, and other necessities. It also provided a chance for sharing stories and becoming closer. Before fire, people slept high in trees, but the warmth of the fire drew them together in small groups, which strengthened their relationships.

When meat was accidentally dropped into a fire, humans discovered cooking. Cooked food was softer and gave us more nutrients(营养), which helped our ancestors grow taller and develop bigger brains. Cooked food was softer, so people's teeth became smaller. People became bigger and began living longer.

Through history, people have found many ways to use fire. Artists would use burnt sticks to draw on cave walls, and potters found that heating clay made pots more lasting. Even today, farmers continue to use fire to clear fields and prepare the land for planting.

In the late 1700s, people discovered that boiling water produced steam, which was later used to power steam engines. This led to the development of steamships and steam trains, developing transportation.

In a word, from its beginning to its many creative uses, fire has played an important part in shaping our world.

We humans can express emotions by telling others how we feel—— but what about animals?  If they do, which ones? Over the past 20 years, researchers have made great progress in this field.

It's very hard for us to assess(评估) emotions in animals, because they cannot tell us how they feel. The most easily noticeable reaction of an animal to an event is how it changes its behavior. Humans often change facial expressions and body languages depending on whether we experience a pleasant event or not.  For example, changes in the ear position or the amount of the white of the eyes can show different levels of pain or fear in animals. It is important to remember that the facial expressions of animals usually look different from those of humans—— joy might not be shown by a smile, while sadness may not be shown by tears.

Another example of animal behavior that is linked to emotions is vocalizations(发声), which can show stress.  Imagine you are singing a song in front of many people; your voice might be shaking if you are nervous. Researchers have found that the vocalizations of pigs and cows also change and get less smooth when these animals are under stress.

It seems that animals react to their environments much as humans do. So, we can infer that animals can feel emotions.  If we can better understand how animals react to their environments, we can improve these environments as well as human-animal relationships.

They' re right to be so. This type of answer makes math feel like a world of rules that must  . How boring! As a math researcher, I like to challenge rules. Instead of simply  that one plus one equals two, let's go a step further and question whether it's always true.

Sometimes, one plus one can equal  than two. If you and a friend each have 1.5 times the amount of money  for a cup of coffee, alone you can only buy one cup, but together you can join your money to afford three.

Sometimes, one plus one is just one. If you put one pile(堆) of sand on top of  , you just get one pile of sand. Or if you mix two colors, you only get one new color.

And in some situations, one plus one is . If I say, "I'm not not hungry." that means"I'm hungry." The point here is that one"not" plus another"not" means no"nots".

You might think this isn't math because the items in question aren't numbers at all. But the goal of learning math isn't just to get the numbers  . Instead, it's to understand the world on a deeper level. , in mathematical research, we often try to explore when a rule holds and when it doesn't.

I want us to see math as a space to ask questions and explore  answers, rather than a strict place where rules are all set in stone.
