My Favorite Form of Art

There are different forms of art, such as painting, music, and literature. 

What do you see when you look at abstract art (抽象艺术)? Is it meaningful? Does it look like anything? Abstract art became popular in the early  (twenty) century. Artists did not want their art to be realistic at that time. They didn't want things in their works to look like  (really) ones. They were more interested in basic shapes and colors. 

Picasso is probably  most famous of those artists. He painted and drew in many styles. Sometimes he used a lot of blue colors. Later, he used more red and pink colors. Many of his paintings  (call) "cubist", because they are made of painted squares. After a long time, Picasso's paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and things by  (use) strange shapes. His work was so original that many of his fellow artists didn't understand it at all. 

Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes and patterns  (paint) his subjects. He also used strong colors to express (he) feelings. 

Other artists, like the surrealists, were interested in the subconscious. Painters like Magritte used many symbols in their  (work). The meaning or subject of their work wasn't always clear. Dali, another surrealist artist, painted pictures which looked  dreams. 

There are still many abstract artists  the world now. Abstract art is the way many artists prefer. They want people to pay attention to art itself and find the hidden meaning in it.

Today I'm not    to appreciate abstract art, and I'd rather see some realistic works.

As one of the most celebrated landscape paintings in Chinese art history, A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains holds great cultural value for centuries. Created during the Northern Song Dynasty, this masterpiece was the work of Wang Ximeng, a talented young artist.

The painting is a long scroll (卷轴). It is over 11 meters long and 51.5 centimeters tall. Scrolls are a traditional Chinese art form. What makes this painting special is the colors Wang used. He took natural materials from rocks and mixed them with animal glue (胶水). These colors are so good that they still look bright after almost 900 years, even though the painting is easy to break.

In the painting, you can see the beauty from southern China. There are many mountains with sharp tops. Long rivers connect small villages, wooden bridges and fishing boats. You can also find people—some are farming, some are on boats, some are walking. They show how people lived happily with nature back then. This mix of natural beauty and daily life expresses the ancient Chinese idea of "unity (统一) between man and nature". This means humans and nature are one and should help each other.

Today, this painting is kept in the Palace Museum in Beijing. Museum workers keep it in a box in good temperature and humidity—too hot, too cold, or too wet would damage the old silk and colors. I think, because it is easy to break, the museum only shows it sometimes, but it still influences many modern artworks.

As the largest art museum in the western United States, LACMA (the Los Angeles County Museum of Art) welcomes nearly a million visitors every year. It offers plenty of docent-led (讲解员带领的) tour choices to groups and each tour lasts for about 50 minutes. Visitors can also browse famous paintings, sculptures and photos in the museum. But it's closed on Wednesdays, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
