The oil paper umbrella is a traditional Chinese handcraft (手工艺品). It has a history of over 1, 000 years in China. In early Tang Dynasty, it was introduced to Japan and Korea. so it was called the "Tang Umbrella". Later oil paper umbrellas were introduced to other Asian countries, Vietnam (越南), Thailand and Laos (老挝), and each had its own style. 

Yuhang in Hangzhou is known for making oil paper umbrellas for more than 230 years. They are mainly made of skin paper (皮纸), bamboo and Tung oil (桐油). They need to take more than 70 steps to make, including making bamboo ribs, pasting paper (糊纸) and painting patterns (图案). It takes at least a week to make such an umbrella. In 2008, these umbrellas were added to Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录) of China. 

A young man called Liu Weixue learned the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas from his grandfather. "I want to bring the art to life, " Liu said. He improved the umbrellas to win the hearts of young people. As the traditional paper was easy to break, he started to use a kind of thicker paper. In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed for 1, 000 times without breaking. He used a kind of lighter bamboo to make the umbrellas weigh less. 

Now Liu hopes the art can be passed on. He goes to local schools to teach students. He also goes to events in different places to introduce the art. 

Have you had the experience of asking for directions? In fact, it's quite common in our daily life, especially when you travel to a foreign country, and it'll be necessary for you to learn about that. Knowing how to ask for directions can make our stay there much more easier. But the way we ask may result in different answers. Here  (be) some advice and maybe it can help you.

Many warm stories happened at Christmas. I had one, too. Several years ago, on a cold winter morning, I was shopping online. I tried to buy some winter socks to keep my cold feet warm. When I went around the corner in the store, I saw a Christmas tree1 paper angels. I felt 2 and wanted to know why there were so many paper angels. Actually, on each angel was the name of a poor child whose family couldn't3 to buy him or her a gift that year. Shoppers who picked an angel could4 a simple toy or gift and the storekeeper would pack (包装) it up and 5 it to the child that Christmas.

There are many aspects (方面) to language learning, such as how words are said, which words are chosen and what forms of words are used. All of these aspects together can make learning a foreign language difficult. 

◆Don't worry too much about pronouncing words the wrong way. 

Pronunciation is important, of course.  But the most important step in learning a new language is to practice speaking it. As for learning any new skill, practice makes perfect. And most of the time, the native (本地的) speaker is glad to help improve the pronunciation of the words. 

◆Don't be afraid to guess the meaning of what someone says. 

 It is impossible to know all of them. You may use context and body language to guess what others say. For example, when a person says "Hola" and waves his hand, one might guess that the person is giving a greeting. Whether it means "Hello" or "Good morning", it is not necessarily important at that moment to know the exact meaning.

Learning a new language or skill always takes time. Many will give up learning because it is too hard or boring. Some may think that other people will make fun of them for making mistakes. But it's OK to make mistakes. Nobody is perfect, after all. Don't lose hope and keep trying.

On September 18, 1931, a tragic event took place in Chinese history—the September 18th Incident. 

Soldiers from Japan blew up part of the railway near Liutiao Lake and then blamed Chinese soldiers. They attacked the military camp of the Northeast Army. Because of the no-resistance (抵抗) order, the Northeast Army couldn't fight back, and Shenyang was taken. 

Soon, more cities in Northeast China like Fushun and Changchun were also occupied by Japan. In less than half a year, all of Northeast China was under Japanese control. Then Japan set up a puppet regime (伪政权) called "Manchukuo" and started 14 years of cruel rule over the people in Northeast China. 

However, the Chinese people didn't give in. People in Northeast China formed an army to fight against the Japanese. They fought bravely. Their fight was the start of armed (武装) resistance against Japan. 

After 14 years of hard fighting, in 1945, Japan finally gave up. The Chinese people won the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. We should always remember this history and never forget the national shame.

Qingming is China's fifth solar term（节气），which fell on April 4，2025. "Qingming" means the skies are clear and bright. Temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases，making it an important time for plowing（耕种）and sowing（播种）in the spring. 

The ancient Chinese believed that in this solar term，yin gradually decreases while yang begins to rise. An interesting saying "voles（田鼠）turn to quails（鹌鹑）"reflects this idea. The vole was believed to stand for yin probably because voles in winter stay underground. But with the temperature rising, they become more active and begin moving around on the ground. This is what quails usually do，and why they stood for yang. It's said that in this solar term，ancient people would see quails moving in fields of grass and mistake them for voles. So this gave rise to the saying. 

Among the 24 solar terms，Qingming，also called Tomb-sweeping Day，stands out as the only one celebrated as an important Chinese festival. Chinese people pay respect to their ancestors with offerings and by cleaning their tombs. 

Many new and eco-friendly ways to celebrate Qingming have replaced the traditional practices of burning joss paper and setting off firecrackers. For example，in 2023，people at the Babaoshan Funeral Home in Beijing placed paper boats carrying wishes into a small pool. These things are made from water-soluble（可溶于水的）wood pulp（浆），with characters printed using food-grade pigments（颜料）. 

How time flies! It  (be) two years since I began to study abroad on my student exchange program in Canada. I treasured that period of time because it was really a  (value) experience. Now let me share it with you.

Being polite can help you make friends, and being rude can make you lose friends. Being polite does not seem difficult, but for many people it remains a challenge. You might want to know how to be a polite person. The following are two suggestions: Be gentle, not pushy. When you do something, offer something, or make a request, you do it without making people feel like they are being pushed into a corner. For example, if you are having a conversation, it's OK to ask a question or offer your opinion, but it is rude to be pushy. Even if you're trying to help,  don't be pushy. If the person says "No, thank you. " then say "Please, I'd really love to help. " If they still say no, then let it go. It is clear that they want to do something for you, . You can do something for them some other time. 

Start a conversation by asking questions about the other person.  . If they want to know, they will ask. Listen when they are talking and look interested. Don't look around the room when they are talking. . 

Why do cats hate water?

While surfing the internet, you might have seen videos of cats taking a shower. Most cats fight or look unhappy. Have you ever wondered why most cats don't like water?

Evolution（进化）may be the first reason. Different from dogs, cats haven't changed much over the past 10, 000 years. They still act a lot like their ancestor（祖先）, the African wildcat. "African wildcats are typically going to be hunting on land. So they didn't really develop the habit of being in the water, " cat expert Kristyn Vitale told Popular Science. So it makes sense that today's cats don't jump into pools with much excitement. 

Being wet may also influence cat's senses. Jennifer Vonk, a cat expert from Oakland University, said that cats find being wet uncomfortable（不舒服的）, and it can mess with their sense of smell. Water can hide a cat's natural smell, making them upset. It may also bring new smells they don't like, like the chemicals（化学物质）in tap water（自来水）. 

On the other hand, getting wet may throw off a cat's balance（平衡）. For example, whiskers（腮须） help cats explore their surroundings （周围环境）and find their way. When whiskers get wet, cats might not sense movements（移动）, Vitale explained. 

"In general, cats do not need to be given a bath by their owners, " US professor Alison Diesel told VMBS News. She explained that cats can clean themselves. Taking showers may also cause trauma（精神创伤）to cats, which can influence the human-animal relationship. 

Fashion (时尚) used to be all about beautiful shoes. Young people often wore high heels (高跟鞋) and white sneakers (运动鞋). But in recent years, shoes people once called "ugly", like Crocs and Birkenstocks (勃肯鞋), have become popular for daily wear. Even famous people, like Blackpink's Jennie and Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also wear them. So, why do people love these "ugly" shoes? 

One reason is comfort. Birkenstocks are special because their footbeds slowly change to fit people's feet, making them perfect for everyone. 

Another reason is self-expression. People decorate (装饰) their Crocs to show what they like and who they are. Wearing "ugly" shoes also gives people a break in today's world, where many feel they must look perfect. 

Carolyn Mair, a professor of psychology (心理学) of fashion, told Vogue magazine that our interest in ugly shoes also comes from how our brain works. "Our brains often are attracted (吸引) to the unusual over the simple, " Mair explained. That's because brains think that what's "normal" or usual means no danger. That's why people are easily attracted to something novel. In fashion, this way of dressing is called "peacocking (炫耀)". 

Young people's love for "ugly" shoes is not about saying no to beauty, it's about going against old fashion rules. By mixing comfort, creativity and even some humor (幽默), they are redefining (重新定义) what's cool. So if the shoe fits, then wear it.
