I had the strange dream last night.

I was walking down a long road, all alone.

After a three-year break, the famous vlogger Li Ziqi came back in 2024. This made a lot of people very excited on the Internet.

On Tuesday afternoon, she put out two videos on social media platforms both in China and abroad. In one video, she spent several months carefully fixing her grandmother's wardrobe. She used traditional Chinese lacquerware(漆器) skills to do this. These skills are part of our intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产). In the other video, she changed a woodshed into a really nice cloakroom in the woods.

Since 2015, Li Ziqi has been famous for her short videos. These videos showed countryside life, how to make traditional food, and some cultural things. The peaceful life change and information moments with her grandmother in her videos made a lot of people like her. In February 2021, she set a Guinness World Record. Her YouTube channel was the Chinese-language channel with the most followers. There were 14.1million followers at that time. Even when she wasn't making videos for a while, more and more people started to follow her.

Now, she has an amazing 20.1 million followers on YouTube.

Do you ever wonder why trees begin to bud (发芽), flower earlier in some cities? Scientists finally found the answer but it's not very pleasant. New science suggests a relationship between light pollution and the timing when trees produce buds, which shows the arrival of the spring season.

Light pollution is defined by the Lighting Research Center as the harmful effect of outdoor lighting such as streetlights. Too much light at night destroys natural cycles and makes it hard to see stars and planets. It harms the environment more than we realize.

By studying some trees, researchers found out that trees lit by man-made lights at night start to bud about7.5 days earlier than trees in natural darkness. And they found out that light had a more important effect than temperature when the buds came out. The early budding may cause problems for insects, which feed on leaves, and the birds which then feed on them in turn. Professor Richard French Constant, who helped lead the research, explained that more than the budding of trees, the study implies the danger to the balance of nature. "At the moment, caterpillars(毛毛虫) are born at just the right time to eat the new leaves that trees grow, and birds are born at the right time to eat these young caterpillars. But, when man-made lights make trees grow leaves earlier, it can mess up this natural timing and cause problems for both the caterpillars and the birds," he said.

We need to do more research on how light pollution affects nature. If the problem was left to continue, it is believed that by 2100, spring would begin almost a full month earlier than it does today.

Why Can't People Stop Touching Museum Exhibits (展品)?

When visiting the British Museum, you can see visitors touch ancient bowls even though the museum rules say no touching is allowed. Museum guards say it's impossible to stop people from breaking the no-touch rule.

Most museum-going is still a mainly visual(视觉的) experience for visitors to admire the artworks. But over the past few years, more and more museums have been working to include additional senses, like sounds and smells. But touch, especially, is only allowed in certain areas, like the Louvre'sTouch Gallery, or the British Museum's Hands On Desks.

 Before there were museums, there were curiosity rooms filled with a collection of interesting objects from around the world. When people visited the collection, the objects were passed around. Museums continued with this spirit of openness at first.

But as museums grew, the spirit no longer existed. When you' ve got 4 million visitors a year, you can hardly have everybody touching something. Sometimes people are likely to damage the artworks. So the rule against touching artworks makes great sense. Smaller museums still sometimes encourage visitors to touch their objects.

Why are we so unwilling to keep our hands to ourselves? Some people just want to make sure the artworks are real. But there' s a larger truth. Visitors say that they want to feel how deep an engraving(雕刻) goes, so as to better understand the artistic skills, in this way, touching is part of trying to somehow make contact with the past.

Everywhere I look, there are new buildings being built. The neighborhoods that I knew as a boy, filled with beautiful old buildings, have mostly   , and in their place, modern, high-rise buildings have appeared. If we continue in this way, nothing will remain of our heritage(遗产).

Historic protection has become   all over the world in recent years, but many countries have chosen new construction over protection. There is a good reason for this. As the population has become , people want the usefulness of modern living. But a city should also show the  of its culture and heritage. How can our children understand our culture if we erase so much of its history?

The reasons for protecting historic buildings are not  about an emotional connection to the past. There are also good economic reasons in favour of protection. The repair and protection of historic sites can become an economic engine, tourists and small business to the area. There are several good examples of this in the Middle East. In Dubai(迪拜), the historic AI Bastikiya district draws thousands of tourists every year from all over the world. It also attracts local people, eager to learn about their past.

Those who are against historic protection think that it is too expensive. But many recent  all over the world have told us that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, renovation(翻新) of an existing building can cost about $40 per square metre  than even the most basic new building, while protecting the beauty of the original building. What's more, environmental experts believe that the  building is the one that is already built. We recycle so many other things. We can and should recycle buildings, too.

N: Hello！ Li Hua, I was told that Chinese Teachers' Day is to commemorate(纪念) Confucius, an important person in ancient China, right?

Li: Right. According to the record, during the Han and Jin  , on August 27 each year, Confucius'birthday, followed by court officials, the emperor would go to Confucius' temple and show his respect for the great philosopher. So on this day, teachers around the country enjoyed a  vacation.

N: Wonderfully! I know in China, there is a2,300-year tradition of respecting teachers and education. How did teachers   their own festival in ancient China?

Li: Teachers were given dried meat as gifts. Besides, excellent-performing teachers   from the whole country would be given 500 liang(两) silver coins as  .

N: I see. But how do your teachers spend this day now?

Li: Nowadays, the teachers' salaries and social position are  improved, but they work harder.They still give us lessons on Teachers' Day, so we usually give them a surprise.

N: What surprise?

Li: We usually decorate our classroom colourful balloons and flowers in the early morning. When teachers come in, we all clap hands and say"Happy Teachers' Day!"

N: Your teachers  be very pleased and moved.

Li: Yes. By the way, is there a festival in the US?

N: Of course. That's Teacher Appreciate Day. It's in the first full week of May. Teaching is regarded as a time-consuming (费时的) and challenging profession in our country, so there are endless ways to say thank you to those that play or have played such a huge role in our lives.
