Science shows that helping others can make you feel good too. The key is to find the way that works for you.
There's a Chinese saying that goes, "If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit(继承)a large amount of money. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody. "
For thousands of years, great thinkers have suggested the same thing: Happiness is found in helping others. Scientific research provides compelling(令人信服的) data to support the idea that helping others may be the secret to living a life that is happier, healthier, and more productive and meaningful.
Giving can feel great. And as we learn early, it's better to give than to receive. And the more you give, the more you are likely to gain purpose, meaning, and happiness. Follow these tips:
The gift of time is often more valuable to the receiver, and more satisfying to the giver, than the gift of money. We don't all have the same amount of money, but we all have time. We can give some of this time to help others— whether a few hours each day, or a few days each year.
When you give to a cause(事业), what should you pay attention to? Michael Norton, a professor at Harvard Business School, in Massachusetts, says, "giving to a cause that specifies(具体说明) what they're going to do with your money or service leads to more happiness".
"Selfless giving easily becomes overwhelming(无法抗拒的), " psychologist Adam Grant says. He advises giving to others, but keeping your personal and emotional needs in mind. You matter too!
Set aside time to serve your community, think about your choices, and find the cause and type of service that best match your values.

Do you love to live in a big city like Beijing or Sydney? While growing up in California, the USA, Melissa Regan imagined eventually moving to New York, getting a job and enjoying "living in the big city".
But after signing up for a term in Vienna, Austria and "accidentally" ending up studying in France in 1999, Melissa Regan found herself finally living in another big city— Paris. "But I can't say that it was planned, " she said.
While she'd visited the French capital twice as a young adult, France wasn't necessarily one of Regan's favorite places.
However, during that "life-changing" term in the south of France, French culture opened her eyes in a way that changed her life.
"In the United States, especially at that time, you would meet someone for coffee, and they would be there, but they would be looking almost past you because they would be thinking of their next date, " she says. "And in France, you will go have a coffee and it was just like the world stopped for hours. "
On returning to the US, Regan signed up for an international MBA program. It would allow her to spend a whole year in France. Once she graduated, Regan was offered an internship (实习工作) at a company in Paris in 2002, which provided her with the chance to live in the French capital.
"I thought that was incredible, " she says. "And it would be an opportunity that would be silly to pass by. "
As she settled into (适应) life in Paris, Regan was attracted by its culture, especially the city's restaurants and museums, and "just how much fun you could have" there. She says that she planned to live and work in the European city for a year or two at first.
However, Regan fell in love with a Frenchman named Julien. They got married in 2007. "I had already been in Paris for three years, " she adds. "So I was really enjoying my life. As we know, Harry Potter is a fictional character created by British author J. K. Rowling. Harry Potter was first introduced in the novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which (publish) in 1997.
Some Harry Potter fans were (happy) early this year when actress Miriam Margolyes said the books and films are for young people, not adults. She said adults who enjoy Harry Potter should forget about it and go on to other things. Margolyes played Professor Sprout in popular movies.
But according to new data from the UK, a lot of older people enjoy (read) books that are classified as "young adult", or "YA". YA fiction is usually written for people aged 12 and 18. However, a new report has found that three-quarters of YA readers in the UK are adults, and almost one-third are aged over 28. So do adults enjoy fiction that's written for teenagers? The report said it may be because adults are now "growing up more slowly", those aged over 18 feel that the themes of YA books still relate to their lives. YA fiction may give them (comfortable) as they delay(推迟)"adult life", the report said. The period of development between the ages of 18 and 25 is called "emerging(新兴的) adulthood".
However, some of those who enjoy YA books say there are a number of other reasons why they like them. Some think of YA books as just another genre(类型)(enjoy)— and there are examples of good YA fiction and bad YA fiction. Others say YA books can be (easy) to read and enjoy if you're feeling tired or stressed, because they're written for a younger audience.

What is it like to be a horse? I can tell you because I've been one all my life. And what a life it has been!
It had plenty of grass, a pond, and trees for shade. There was a shed(棚) at one end where we could stand when it was cold. Outside the fence lay more fields, a stream, and our master's house.
I ran and played with the other colts(小雄马驹). These colts were all older and bigger than me. Sometimes their play turned rough, with lots of kicking and biting.
One day, my mother called me away from them. "I hope you will grow up gentle and kind, " she told me. "I do not want you to bite or kick, even at play. You should always be good, and do your work as well as you can. "
Our master's name was Farmer Grey. He always had kind words and pa ts for all the horses. He was kind and fair to his workers as well.
Most of our days were quiet and pleasant. Yet there was one other incident that I have never forgotten. One day, I was grazing in the field with the other colts when we heard dogs howling in the distance. The hounds(猎狗) came first, racing after a speedy rabbit. Next came a group of riders.
The rabbit scampered down the hill and leaped across the stream. The hounds followed. But one slipped on the grass and fell down. His rider, a handsome young man, was flung off. He landed hard and lay still on the grass.
"I don't understand why people are so interested in hunting, " my mother said. "Then again we're only horses. "
I didn't know the answer to that. But soon I would learn more about the mysterious (神秘的) ways of humans, when I left that pleasant field behind forever.

Laurie had just come home from school when she heard a light hammering sound coming from Grandpa's study. Curious, she tapped on the door. "Grandpa? Can I come in?"
"Just a second!" Grandpa answered. Laurie heard lots of shuffling (拖着脚走). "Enter!"
Grandpa was sitting empty-handed at his desk, but there were wood shavings everywhere. "Aren't you supposed to be at school?" he asked.
"It's over at three. What were you doing in here?" Laurie said suspiciously(怀疑地). She saw something wooden poking out from underneath a book. "Aha!" she cried, pulling the object out. "What's this?"

It was a wooden crocodile with a string attached to the top of its head so the mouth could be opened and shut.

Just then, Mom called from downstairs, "Laurie! I'm home!"

Here's a joke for you: Why did the crab(螃蟹) cross the road? It didn't. It used the sidewalk. This was one of the top ten jokes in a very unusual competition held in April, 2024. A small museum in southeast England held the inaugural World's Funniest Crab Joke competition.
You won't be surprised to hear this is the first time this competition has taken place. It was organized by"Europe's first and only"crab museum to celebrate International Crab Day on April 26, 2024.

After the judges—— including some school children from the area——had chosen their favorite jokes, the top four were written on paper and placed in bags along with some tinned fish. These were then thrown into the local tidal(潮汐的) pool and pulled back on strings (细绳). The first one to come back with a crab that could be placed in a bucket was the winner.
No rude jokes or jokes that were scientifically inaccurate(不准确的) were allowed. One of the aims of the competition was to get people thinking about crabs and nature, according to the museum.

The manager answers, "Yes, we do. "
