When I spent the summer with my grandmother, she sent me to the store with a list. Behind the counter (柜台) was a lady, Miss White.

"Excuse me," I said, she looked up. "I need to get these," I continued, holding my list.

"So? Go and get them," Miss White pointed to a sign. "There is no one here but you and me, and I'm not your servant, so get yourself a basket over there."

I went shopping twice a week that summer. Sometimes she shortchanged (少找零) me. Other times she overcharged (多收钱). Going to the store was like getting into a fight. But by the end of the summer, I could finish the one—hour shopping trip in around 15 minutes. On the morning when I was to return home, I stopped to buy some water.

"All right," she said. "What did you learn this summer?" "That you're mean (刻薄的)!" I replied.

Miss White just laughed. "I know what you think of me," she said. "Well, I don't care! I meet some children every day. My job is to teach every child life lessons. When you get older, you'll be glad!" Glad I met Miss White? Ha! Impossible!

Then one day my daughter came to me with homework trouble. "It's too hard, Mum," she said. "Could you finish my math problems for me?"

"If I do it for you, how can you learn to do it yourself?" I said. Suddenly, I was back at that store where I had learned the hard way to add up the bill (账单) by myself. From then on, I've never been overcharged.

Yan Hongsen is a student from Zhejiang Province. He has been a space lover s he was four. And after he entered primary school, he even gave his classmates a lesson a rockets at an opening ceremony. Because of that, all of his friends called him "rocket boy".

A research team from China has invented a six—legged guide robot. "We believe our robot will work as a pair of eyes for blind people," said Professor Gao Feng.

According to a study, there are around 

17.31 million blind people in China. However, because of high training cost and long training periods, there are only over 400 guide dogs in service, which means only one guide dog is available for every 40,000 blind people in China.

As a strong backup for the real guide dog, the guide robot can understand the orders of blind people and reply in less than one second (秒). It can also see and tell traffic lights. Another task of our robot is to talk with blind people and serve as a home companion (陪伴者). Besides, it can walk smoothly on different kinds of terrain (地形) and guide the blind both indoors and outdoors with no need of the Internet. So it is easy and convenient for the blind to use the robot. The guide robot is a fast walker. It is able to walk at the highest speed of three meters every second.

The guide robot is now being tested and Gao believes that it will soon be ready for the market!

As the most important and oldest festival in China, the Spring Festival is connected with many traditions and customs.

When Chinese people meet during the Spring Festival, they don't kiss or hug like Westerners. The first thing for the Chinese New Year visit is to kneel down (叩首)or bow to the elders to show their respect.

Clear out the mess
