Why Should You Learn a Second Language?

In today's highly-connected world, there are many reasons for learning a second language. Here are a few of them. 

You can talk with more people. 

Talking in someone's language does two things. It shows respect (尊重）and it allows you to connect on a deeper level. You might be surprised at how open people are when you speak their language. 

Learning a language isn't just about learning words and grammar. It also about learning about the history and culture of a country. Learning new languages can open up your eyes and bring you closer to people of different countries. 

Traveling is easier and more fun. 

Traveling is much easier if you speak the language of the place you visit. It will help you learn more about the place. The people there know their city better than any visitors. 

It makes you smarter. 

Learning a second language improves your brain.  The more you use your brain to learn, the more active your brain will become.

Do you like summer holiday?

In Australia, summer holiday is from late December to early February. Students have to finish their homework. They should read some English books and write reports. They also need to do science projects with their classmates. They often go to special classes to learn swimming, singing and cooking. And they really like to go to the beach to camp with their parents. 

Summer holiday in the US is very long, from early June to around late August. 

Teachers will give summer homework. But if students don't do it, it's OK. There are many classes and camps. They can be about sports, cooking, or outdoor survival skills (户外生存技巧）. Some students also go camping with friends or family. Some students will try to make money by doing the housework. Some will do volunteer work like helping the elderly or the poor for free.

Studying in a new school might be difficult. Here is something to help you fit in(融入) at a new school. 

You won't fit in at school if you don't know the school. Ask for a school map. Try to get to know every corner of your new school. A good school handbook can be of great help. But to make it easy, ask the people near you where something is. 

Be kind to everyone, the young or the old, because they might just be your next teacher or friend. Get to know your teachers. Teachers always pay attention to(关注) new students. Talk to them and find out more about them. 

Talk to different people. Join a few clubs or sports teams and make more friends in these ways.

Anna and Zoe were good friends. They did everything together—homework, soccer practice and even folding paper during their lunch breaks. But one  (rain) afternoon, their friendship faced a test.
