What can trees tell us about climate change?

Trees can keep a record of Earth's climate for a very long time. In fact, trees can live for hundreds and sometimes even thousands of years.

If you see a stump (树桩), you may find many rings on its top. These rings can tell us how old the tree is, and what the weather was like during each year of the tree's life.

In most places, daily weather records have only been kept for the past 100 to 150 years. So, scientists can use trees to learn about the climate hundreds to thousands of years ago.

Along the River During the Qingming Festival is a famous old Chinese painting. It shows the scenes along the banks of the Bianhe River in the capital city Dongjing (now Kaifeng).

The painting is made  silk and it is 24. 8 cm wide and 528. 7 cm long.  (actual), it is said that there are 587 characters, more than 60 animals, over 20 boats, and more than 30 houses.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is in Guizhou province of China and crosses the Beipan River, 625 meters below. It is the world's tallest bridge. It helps people travel much faster and brings many visitors to the area.

Guizhou has rough land with mountains and deep river valleys. The Huajiang Grand Canyon is sometimes called the "Earth's Crack". It made trips here really hard in the past. But now this bridge has changed that. It is a suspension bridge. That means its middle part hangs between two towers and has no supports under it.

It took three years to build the bridge, and it cost about $295 million. For safety, over 400 sensors (传感器) were put on the bridge, and 96 trucks were driven on it to test it. The bridge is now part of the S57 highway. Before, the trip between the two sides took 70 minutes on winding roads. Now, it takes just a little over a minute.

The bridge is also a tourist attraction. There is a glass walkway where visitors can look down at the river. People can take a glass elevator (电梯) to a cafe 800 meters high. If you want to try something more exciting, there is bungee jumping (蹦极).

China has built many bridges in Guizhou. In the 1980s, the province had fewer than 3,000 bridges. Now, it has over 32,000 bridges, including almost half of the world's 100 tallest bridges.

Sixteen years ago I learned an important life lesson in the back of a New York City taxi.

Japanese researchers have developed smart chopsticks. The smart chopsticks make food seem saltier without adding more salt. 

A professor in Meiji University and a drinks company developed the smart chopsticks. The chopsticks are part of a device.  It uses a weak electric current (电流) to send salt from the food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth to create a salty taste. This makes people feel the salty taste about 1.5 times stronger.

These chopsticks are very useful in Japan. Japanese people love salty food. They eat about 10 grams of salt every day. That is twice the amount suggested by the WHO.  And this may cause heart problems.

"" said a researcher of the drinks company. "However, if we just eat less salt in the old way, food may not taste good. It is hard to give up our favorite food or eat food with no taste."

The team is still working on the chopsticks. They hope to sell them to people next year.  In 2021, he made a screen that could show the taste of food. People could even lick it!

On April 11th, a 25-kilometer hiking activity called "Green Heyuan, Marching Forward" was finished in Heyuan. Over 1,000 hikers from different places took part in . They started from Zhongshan Park and walked past Heyuan Dinosaur Museum and Dongjiang Bay Park.

Along the river, people  fresh air and green views. They also watched wonderful shows. Some  robots danced and did "Kung fu". Besides, Heyuan's local cartoon characters "Four Little Dragons" were so lovely, the hikers cheered and  photos with them.

A group of  made this hike more special. They stood along the way to  water and snacks for tired hikers. When some hikers walked , they walked beside the hikers and cheered them on.  children hikers felt tired, they would tell them fun stories about Heyuan's dinosaurs.

With their warm , the hikers felt safer and happier. Many hikers loved this activity very much. A hiker  Shenzhen said, "The nice views and friendly people here are the best gifts. This hike makes us feel the beauty of Heyuan and the warmth of young people."

Do you think a long face is the only sign that someone feels down? Researchers say that the way a person walks can also show his feelings.

Scientists did an interesting study. They asked actors to remember the moments when they felt angry, happy, scared or sad. While feeling those moods, the actors walked a short distance. They wore tight (紧身的) clothes with reflective (反光的) markers, so the scientist can record only their walking movements with videos. The actors couldn't show their faces or other body signals (信号).

The volunteers were asked to watch the videos carefully.     ▲     They found that people with big arm and leg movements were often seen as angry. And those with small movements appear sad or scared.

Mina Wakabayashi is a scientist in Japan. She said, "Even without talking, we can understand others by watching their body movements. This helps us in social life." She added, "We can also sense someone's feeling from far away. Then we can change how we act toward them." We can learn a lot from the results of this walking study. These simple walking movements always tell people's real feelings clearly.

This study can be used in real life. The researchers say people can more easily hide their feelings through talking or facial expressions than through their walk.
