In March, 40 participants(参与者) from the United States and China joined an exchange program in Guangyuan, Sichuan Province. The event followed the footsteps of Hope Justman, aUS writer. Since 2001, she (walk) the ancient shudao 25 times.

Shudao, or the ancient road to Shu(Sichuan' s former name), is not just one road. It is (actual) a network of roads that covers more than 1,000 kilometers and connects the SichuanBasin to the Central Plains. Shudao (build) over 2,300 years ago. It played an important role  providing transportation lines in ancient China.

Many Chinese know shudao from the works of Li Bai, a poet in Tang Dynasty. He once wrote:"the road to Shu(Shudao) is (hard) than climbing to the blue heaveas". For many of the American participants, the journey was not only a hike but also  experieace ofChinese culture.

Qiu Tingting, a Chinese translator, says that Justman wrote the book (share) her hiking experiences. But after her book got attention on social media, more Western (traveler) began walking the ancient road each year."This reminds (we) that the best cross-cultural communication is often not a one-way broadeast. It is an open gateway that allows people to experience it with their own steps  discover it with their own eyes," Qin says.

When I was little, my family lived in a small town. My parents worked hard. Although they didn't go to college, they' ve set good examples for me in life, and I' ve learned many important lessons from them.

For as long as I can remember, there was a pickle jar (泡菜坛) in my parents' bedroom.Every night, Dad would empty his pockets and drop his coins into the jar. When the jar was full,Dad would sit at the kitchen table and roll (卷) the coins into newspapers before taking them to the bank. This was a special event. We put the coins in a small box between us in his old truck.

Years later, I finished college and moved to another town for work. During a visit home, Inoticed the pickle jar was gone. It had done its job. Suddenly, I realized how much Dad loved me and had taught me about hard work and hope.

My dad didn't talk much and never gave me long speeches about trying hard or believing in myself. But the pickle jar taught me these things better than the flowery words ever could. Those important lessons that dad gave me, along with the pickle jar, have deeply influenced my whole life.
