1、When I was fourteen, I made money by cutting grass for the neighbours.
Mr Ballou hardly paid. Maybe he was short of money. Then, one day, as I was walking by, he asked me to come inside.
"I haven't paid you," Mr Ballou said, "but perhaps you can choose some books for the work you've done."
He pointed to the books. His study (书房) looked like a library.
"What do you read?" Mr Ballou asked.
"I don't know." Actually, I just read what was in front of me, what I found in the magazines or on the back of food boxes. The idea of choosing a book to read on purpose was new to me.
He looked at me in surprise, and handed me a book.
"The Last of the Just," I read. "What's it about?"
"You tell me later."
It was my first time to read the world literature (文学), and I was shocked by the power a novel could have. I couldn't express my feelings in words, so when Mr Ballou asked, "Well?" I only replied, " ▲ ."

5、

Each new year is like a blank notebook, waiting for us to fill it with wonderful stories and growth. People can improve their lives in many meaningful ways. So I am going to make clear resolutions that I will try my best to keep.
The first one is about taking up a new hobby. I am going to join the school dancing club next term. In my opinion, this resolution will not only make me happy but also bring joy to the people around me.
I am also going to get fitter and healthier next year. Besides jogging for 30 minutes every morning, I plan to do push-ups for at least 15 minutes every evening after finishing my homework. Every time I exercise, I can feel my body becomes stronger. I believe keeping this exercise routine will help me stay away from illness and make me a healthier and happier person.
Last but not least, I know my English isn't good enough now, especially in listening and writing, so I am going to spend two more hours each weekend studying English. It might be hard sometimes, especially when I meet difficult words or grammar problems, but I will keep going and ask my English teacher for help.
The new year brings new hopes and new chances. These resolutions are not just promises to myself, but also steps toward a better me. May the new year be full of growth and surprises, and may we all become the best version of ourselves.
(1)、Why does the writer make resolutions according to the passage?(2)、What does the writer think of joining the school dancing club?(3)、How long does the writer plan to do push-ups every evening?(4)、How many resolutions does the writer make?(5)、Do you want to make New Year's resolutions? 6、Katie DeWitt is a high school student in Washington, US. She loves flying planes. At just 14, she took her (one) flight (飞行) in a small plane. It was a little scary at the very beginning, but once she was in the air, she loved it. "I saw everything up there! an amazing experience!" she said.
Katie is part of a programme (计划). It teaches young people how to be pilots (飞行员). Another student, Evie Nesselrode, is also in the programme. Although they go to different schools, they learn to fly together. They become good friends and form strong relationship.
In this programme, Katie and Evie learn about many subjects like physics (物理学) and maths. Maths is really important for pilots! They use it to know how heavy the plane is, how fast it is flying, and how long it will take to land. They learn these things to make sure every flight is safe. Katie and Evie never get tired learning them. In fact, they enjoy it so much when they see and feel their own (improve). They find they become even (organized) than before.
Katie and Evie don't just study in the classroom. They also practise flying real planes in the air. After flying for 30 hours with a teacher, they will be able (fly) on their own. Katie and Evie both dream of (become) real pilots one day. They know it takes hard work, but they are ready to try (they) best. "We have really big goals, and we (work) harder for them in the coming days. I have confidence that we can achieve them," Katie said. "Anyway, not many people get the chance to fly."

Steaming is one of the oldest and healthiest ways to cook food. People have steamed food for thousands of years, using simple pots. Today, it's still very popular all over the world.
You put a little water in a pot and bring it to a boil (around 100℃). The boiling water makes steam-hot water vapour (蒸气). You place the food over the water, not in it, on a special plate or basket with holes (孔). The steam rises and cooks the food softly. A tight lid (紧密的盖子) keeps the steam inside the pot.
Why is steaming good? It's easy for beginners. Next, steaming needs no oil or fat, so food is lower in calories (卡路里). It also keeps more nutrients (营养成分) inside vegetables compared to boiling them in water. Also, the steam cooks food softly. Boiling or frying can make food hard or dry. More importantly, steaming lets the food's delicious flavour come through.
Almost anything: Like vegetables, fish and seafood, dumplings, chicken, rice, and so on.
It makes food tasty while keeping all the good nutrients inside. Next time you cook vegetables or fish, try steaming!
A. How does steaming work?
B. Why don't you choose to boil or fry?
C. What can you steam?
D. Steaming is a fast, healthy, and clean way of cooking.
E. First, you only need a pot, a little water, and a steamer basket.

Do you ever wish your pet could talk? Well, some animals on the Internet are doing just that. With the help of their owners a lot of training and some special buttons (按钮), pets are learning to "talk" in their own ways.
A popular pet right now is Merlin, an 8-month-old mini pig. People call him "the world's smartest pig". His owner, Mina Alali, put videos of him using buttons to communicate online. Each button has a different word, like "walk" or "food". Merlin presses (按) them to let Mina know what he wants.
Merlin isn't the only pet to learn this cool skill! Some pet dogs, cats, horses, monkeys and even parrots have all been doing the same. Bunny the Talking Dog is another star online with over 8 million followers. She can use over 50 buttons to make sentences and ask questions, though it sometimes takes her owner a while to understand what she means. However, for a pet, it's still amazing!
So, how do you teach a pet to "talk"?
First, get some buttons you can record your voice on. Then, use words your pet hears often, like"treat", "walk", or "play". Say the words clearly many times before you press the buttons. For example, "Want a TREAT? Let's get a TREAT!" Next, put the buttons in a quiet, easy-to-reach place. At last, teach your pet to press it with a paw (爪) or nose. Reward (奖励) them by giving them a real treat when they try!
It takes a lot of time and patience (耐心), and not every pet can learn to do it. But that's okay. Even without buttons, your pets can show their love to you in their own special ways!
(1)、Why does the writer talk about Merlin and Bunny?A、To give examples of pets that can "talk". B、To encourage people to be kind to animals. C、To show one animal is better than the other.(2)、What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?A、Tools for teaching pets to "talk". B、Steps to teach a pet to "talk". C、Reasons to communicate with pets.(3)、What can we know from the passage?A、Every pet can learn to "talk" with buttons. B、Pets can only show love with buttons. C、Teaching pets needs time and patience.(4)、Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?A、①/②③④/⑤⑥ B、①/②③/④⑤/⑥ C、①②/③④/⑤⑥ -

In 2017, a famous painting called A Thousand Li of River and Mountains was on show at the Palace Museum in Beijing. This 900-year-old artwork attracted (吸引) lots of people. Among them was Gui Haowen, then a 16-year-old high school student.
Gui took some photos with her phone, but they didn't show the painting's beauty well. This made her want to learn more about photography and start taking pictures of cultural relics (文物).
However, taking photos in museums isn't easy. Museums don't let visitors use flash or tripods (闪光灯或三脚架), and the lights are often not very bright. "Taking a clear photo in those conditions is difficult," Gui said. But she didn't give up. She tried to be creative. For example, when she took a photo of a silver bowl, she used the shadows (阴影) to make it look like an ink painting.
Gui didn't just take photos. She also studied the history of cultural relics. By understanding the stories, she could take better photos of them. Gui visited around 60 museums and took countless pictures. Whenever she travelled to a new city, a trip to the museum was always at the top of her list.
In 2022, Gui began sharing her cultural relic photos online. Many young people enjoy her works and are becoming more interested in Chinese culture.

13、Strength training helps build strength, power and endurance (耐力). Many adults do this exercise, but is it safe and good for kids? People once thought it was not good, even dangerous for kids. They worried it might hurt kids and affect their growth. But a new study says: strength training actually makes kids' health better overall.
When kids do strength training, their muscles grow, which makes them stronger. It also makes their bones, joints and body systems healthier. It's really good for their bodies.
Becca Rigg is a fitness teacher at a sports center. She knows the good things about strength training. She takes her kids to do strength training 2 to 3 times a week. "I like that teens feel more confident after doing this exercise. They're happy when they see they're getting stronger. Sometimes they make strength training part of their life, and it's easier to keep doing it later," says Rigg.
To start strength training, it's very important to learn the right way from an experienced coach. The coach can make sure kids do the movements safely and correctly. At first, teens can use their own body weight (like doing push-ups or squats). Later, they can make it harder with equipment (like a barbell).
So, let's cheer our kids on as they lift, pull, and push their way to a stronger future. With our support and care, they'll grow up ready to take on whatever life throws at them.
(1)、What does the new study say about strength training for kids?(2)、How often does Becca Rigg take her kids to do strength training?(3)、Why do kids need to learn strength training from an experienced coach?(4)、As a middle school student, would you like to try strength training? Why? (Please give 2 reasons.) -
14、Like most people, you usually start work with the hope of being as productive as possible. Yet, as the day rolls on, you find your task list grows. What you set out to achieve in the beginning seems to get pushed to the side.
You're not alone. Many of us don't have a process toprioritize tasks and always feel like we're playing catch-up. We fail to decide what's the most important task even when everything on the to-do list feels important. But we can get ahead of the game and stay on top of deadlines with some simple methods to set priorities and manage our workload.
Here's a simple way to prioritize our daily tasks and focus (专注) on the work that matters most: Of all the things we now have the energy for, do the thing we're normally least likely to do. If we have two live frogs (青蛙) to eat for breakfast, the idea is to eat the ugliest one as early as possible.
There are several ways this trick (技巧) can benefit us.
Doing something we rarely (很少) do is energizing. You do a behavior like washing your windows that you never do. Having clean windows won't change your life but it challenges your conception of yourself. It influences how we see ourselves. Getting our body moving gives us energy and can improve our focus.
Unfamiliar behaviors often provide more chances to help us grow than familiar ones. When I write for a new publication, it's with a new editor. I get different feedback. I need to change my style to match the style of that publication, so I develop my skills. In this way we'll expand (发展) ourselves, our skills, and our future opportunities.
Some people react to anxiety by working hard on very comfortable behaviors but pay no attention to uncomfortable tasks that are a higher priority. The way of prioritizing helps prevent us from doing that. It makes it harder to fool ourselves that we're being productive by doing busywork that's super comfortable for us but has little chance of changing our life.
Should we use this trick all the time? No. This is a good tip for when we've got energy, but we're swimming in thoughts about all the things we could do, and we're having trouble deciding and focusing.
Priorities are great. Knowing our priorities reduces stress, helps us focus and can also improve productivity and time management. But remember to be realistic about how much work we can actually do each day. When we prioritize our work properly, we're sure to have a good day.
(1)、What does the word "prioritize" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A、To explain what's the most beneficial. B、To decide what should be done first. C、To tell what's the most meaningful. D、To discuss what can be achieved.(2)、The ugliest frog refers to ________.A、the animal we fear most B、the to-do list we've messed up C、what we are least likely to do D、what makes our day terrible(3)、What can we learn from the passage?A、Doing unfamiliar behaviors possibly improves our skills. B、Doing energizing behaviors shows how we see others. C、Doing things we rarely do leads to poor focusing. D、Doing comfortable things changes our life.(4)、What is the passage mainly about?A、A solution to reduce our stress. B、Ways to help us focus and decide. C、A trick to increase our productivity. D、Advantages of developing our skills. -
15、

I have three exams next week. So, I'll spend most of the weekend studying. I'm worried about the exams, but they aren't the only thing I'm worried about. Like most people, I'm worried about missing out on all the fun activities my friends will do.
I have serious FOMO—fear (害怕) of missing out. It is the feeling or idea that you are missing out on something important or enjoyable that others are experiencing. And a big part of FOMO is the feeling that your friends won't miss you when you're not there.
FOMO is a pretty common feeling, especially when people are going out more. Social media (社交媒体) makes it even worse. It's easy to see other people doing fun things while you're doing something boring. Don't get me wrong—I also do fun things, but I still get caught up in FOMO.
Worst of all, I feel like I'm missing out on things I don't even want to do. Even though I don't want to go to a party, I still get FOMO when I think about my friends who are already there. When you feel like you're missing out, it can be hard to decide if you even wanted to go out in the first place. It can make you do things you don't want to. No one wants to miss a joke or see all the pictures when they weren't there. But it's important to take a step back and think about it. Would you have suggested that activity? Do you really want to go, or do you want to go because your friends are going? Do you have something else you'd rather be doing?
Even though FOMO can be harmful to your life, it can also have some good benefits. I know a lot of people who joined clubs or took up new hobbies because their friends did. A lot of these clubs and hobbies have made people happy, including me. In that way, I owe (归功于) some of my school experience to FOMO.
So it's best to avoid FOMO as much as possible. The best thing to do is to check in with yourself and notice how you feel. If you have a good reason for not doing something, don't worry too much about missing out. Do what's best for you, even if that means uninviting yourself from a plan. Your friends are your friends for a reason—they won't forget about you.
(1)、What do we know about FOMO?A、Social media is one of the causes of FOMO. B、People with FOMO hardly make very good friends. C、People with FOMO won't do anything against their wishes. D、FOMO is the feeling that something enjoyable is happening.(2)、The writer probably agrees that ________.A、We should always be with our friends, or they will forget us B、We should follow our hearts and not worry about missing out C、We should allow people with FOMO to go after their hobbies D、We should closely watch what our friends do to avoid FOMO(3)、Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?A、Never Miss Out on Important Things. B、Take Part in More Fun Activities. C、It's Common to Get Worried. D、It's OK to Uninvite Yourself. -

When I moved to a new city with my parents, I had to join a new junior high school in Grade Nine. It was a top school, and everyone seemed to be1 at their studies. On my first day, I stood outside the classroom, feeling nervous and unsure. I didn't know anyone, and I was afraid I couldn't2 up with the others.
As the teacher led me into the classroom, all eyes turned to me. I felt my face turn red and my hands shake. The teacher asked me to introduce myself, but my voice was so low that almost no one could hear. After that, I sat in the last row3, too afraid to talk to anyone. During the first class, the math teacher wrote difficult problems on the blackboard. I tried hard to follow, but I couldn't understand most of them. I started to4 about falling behind.
Just then, a girl next to me leaned over and passed me a piece of paper. On it were clear notes she had taken. "Don't worry," she whispered with a smile. "I can5 you review after class." Her name was Lily, and she was the top student in our class. After class, she explained the math problems to me. She used simple words and drew pictures to make it easier to understand. Weeks later, our class had a group project about environmental protection. I was6 to join a group because I thought no one would want me. But Lily came over and said, "Come with us! Your ideas are important." In the group, I tried to share my thoughts, and everyone listened carefully. With their7, I became more confident. I even volunteered to give our group's presentation.
Now, I'm no longer the lonely new student. I have made many friends, and my grades have improved a lot. I know that without Lily's kindness and help, I would have8 up easily.
