Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signals. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship. 

Different cultures emphasize the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in "small talks", usually over a cup of tea, before they do any job. 

▲In many European countries like the UK or France, people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafés rather than at the office. 

Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. ★After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary. 

Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, British and German cultures share similar values. Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly. 

People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

Cao was born in Beijing, but left home at 20 years old and has studied and lived in the US, the UK and France for over ten years. Having seen so many cultures, Cao wanted to use her drawing skills to show the differences she has experienced. So she created the cartoon series Tiny Eyes Comics. 

"My experience shows that although travel is much easier and faster today, the distance between cultures hasn't shortened, " Cao said. She hopes to build bridges and break down misunderstandings between different cultures. One of her cartoons shows water preferences in different countries. Three glasses of water are shown: the glass of water from the US has ice; the one from France is full of sparkling water; the one from China is steaming. 

Cao also uses her cartoons to show different ways of thinking and social customs. "Her simple pictures have played a big part in reflecting Chinese culture, " an Italian magazine reported. 

Many foreign readers say that Cao's comics help them understand China, while Chinese living abroad feel that they are seen and understood. 

She said that this voice has been the biggest motivation for her to keep creating. 

It's often said that a dog can be a person's best friend. But that relationship can (test) when a dog begins barking at an empty corner of a room, at a door, or anywhere where there doesn't appear to be any activity at all taking place. Is the dog (communicate) with something that humans can't see? Or does it just want to drive its owner crazy?

Dogs can also see (good) in the dark than humans. If a dog is barking, it's possible that something has caught its attention. Maybe it's  wild animal, a leaf or a thief．

Some dogs might bark  they feel bored and a walk is probably needed.

Experts say that owners shouldn't punish their dogs for barking, since they're

(simple) trying to remain watchful(警惕的). But if a dog barks all the time, its owner might consider (take) the dog to the doctor．
