People use body language almost every day. What is body language? How does it work?

Want to speak with your body? Use body language! A "V" gesture shows happiness, victory or peace. Opening the mouth wide shows surprise. This is body language. 

When you speak with others, body language is important. Scientists say we do 65 percent of our communication with body language. For example, when you make faces, people think you are naughty (淘气的) or shy. Frowning (皱眉) shows you are angry. Sometimes your words say one thing, but your body language says another. For example, you touch your face while telling a lie. 

In different cultures, the same body language may have different meanings. Nodding your head in most countries means "Yes". But in some parts of Greece and Turkey, it means "No". 

Different body language can also mean the same thing. Take "hello" for example. The French like to kiss cheeks (脸颊) to say "hello". But the Japanese bow (鞠躬). Maoris in New Zealand touch noses with each other when they meet.

Last Saturday, I went to Harbin Central Street with some of my friends. It was a  (sun) day. Walking along the street, we saw many  (volunteer) offering help in the sun. They helped the elderly with their bags,  (take) photos for some tourists and answered people's questions. Though they  (be) very tired, they didn't stop  (have) a rest. We were moved when we saw this.

Just as we turned a corner, we noticed two little boys standing there and  (cry). We went over to see what happened to  (they). One boy told us that they couldn't find their mother and the other boy told us their  (mother) phone number. I tried to call her.

Twenty minutes  (late), their mother turned up. With tears in her eyes, she thanked us again and again.

We not only enjoyed the buildings along the street, but also got a  (feel) of satisfaction that day. If everyone can reach out a helping hand to others, the world around us will change for the better.

Why Should We Learn Body Language?

In English classes, we spend a large amount of time studying grammar and learning new words.  Few of us, however, pay enough attention to body language. So body language is not important, is it?

The answer is, "Yes!" As the old saying goes, "Actions speak louder than words."  For example, shrug (耸肩) our shoulders, and without a word, we've just said, "I don't know."

Body language can help us stress what we are saying. Moreover, body language can help us find out if someone is lying. Often, people who are lying do not make eye contact (接触).  Because they are uncomfortable with the conversation

In job interviews, the interviewers can sometimes judge the interviewee before he or she speaks.  It can show if you really care about your friends. Leaning forward (身体前倾) into the conversation, for example, means you are interested in what is being said. Listening without making eye contact means you are not paying attention but are waiting for your turn to speak.

Scientists have been studying body language for a long time.  Sometimes, body language is more accurate (精准的) than the words we use. So it is very important for us to learn body language.

I listened to a lesson about body language last Saturday. In that lesson, the teacher taught me some common body language.

No.1 Smile

There are many kinds of smiles, such as happy smiles, shy smiles and warm smiles. But most of the time when people smile, they say, "I'm very friendly!"

No.2 Cross your legs

If you cross your legs, maybe you're hiding something. If you cross, your knees and your knees point to others, maybe you feel uncomfortable with them. So we shouldn't do this in front of others.

No. 3Put your hands on your cheeks (脸颊)

When you touch your cheeks with your hands, you may be thinking about something carefully. When you listen to others with this body language, you may be listening to others very carefully.

Natural disasters like floods, typhoons and earthquakes can happen suddenly and bring great damage. However, in many disaster-hit areas, people always stand together and help each other, which makes the difficult time easier to get through. 

Last year, a big flood attacked a small town in southern China. The water rose quickly and covered many streets. Many families were trapped in their homes and couldn't get food or clean water. At that moment, local volunteers acted quickly. They used boats to carry food, water and medicine to the trapped people. Some young people helped old people and children move to safe places like community centres. Local businesses also joined in the help—they gave away free bread, drinks and warm clothes to those in need. 

During the disaster, a middle school teacher, Mr Li, organised his students to collect useful things for affected people. They put the collected clothes and books into boxes and sent them to the disaster-hit area. The government also sent rescue teams to clear the roads and repair the damaged houses. With everyone's help, the town recovered soon. People learned that unity is strength—no matter how big the disaster is, we can overcome it as long as we help each other.

Body language matters!

Li Lele and Wang Haoran are university students. They both have part-time jobs at a travel company.

A well-dressed lady entered the office. She looked at Li Lele and Wang Haoran, and then walked over to Lele. Lele looked excited. "Good morning, madam!" she said cheerfully.

Haoran sighed and walked away.

"What's the matter?" asked Mr Yang, the boss.

"People always choose Lele instead of me. I don't understand."

"I do. It's the way you communicate."

"How can that be?" Haoran asked. "I don't get a chance to speak."

"Communicating means more than just speaking. Your body language is important too."

"Body language?"

"It's the way you stand and sit. It's your gestures and the expressions on your face. Your whole appearance communicates things. You don't give people a good impression, Haoran. You look down, you never smile, and you don't turn your head towards them.

Look at Lele. She's holding her head up. She always smiles and looks friendly. Her body language is making people feel welcome, so they go to her for help."

Haoran observed Lele carefully for a while and then decided to improve his own body language. He sat up straight and tried smiling at people.

Minutes later, a beautiful girl entered. She walked over to Haoran. A few moments later she left with a smile.

Mr Yang came over at once and said, "You made a good impression on her, Haoran."

"That was my sister," said Haoran. "She wanted to remind me that tomorrow is her birthday."

Helping those in need is a traditional virtue (美德) in our country. And body language is an important way to communicate with others. Both of them make our life more beautiful and meaningful.

There are many people around us who need help, like the disabled, the homeless and the poor children. We can 1 part in volunteer work to help them. We can donate books, clothes or money, or just 2 for them with our kindness. When we help others, we will 3 the meaning of happiness and love. Volunteering also makes us more responsible and kind-hearted.
