Every Thursday morning, Wu Pinxian plays beautiful piano music for people to cut down on their stress at Panyu Central Hospital in Guangzhou, CCTV News reported. What is special about her? She's a 90-year-old grandma.

Wu started to work as a volunteer piano performer in August 2023. The hospital has a piano show every Thursday to make a relaxing environment and cheer up patients (病人). Wu's music is very useful. Many patients and their friends sing along with her piano and some even become her fans (狂热爱好者). They don't feel so worried or scared in this way. Wu plays there for one and a half hours with just a short break.

Though Wu helps others feel better through her music, she herself feels sad because she lost her husband (丈夫) in December, 2023. But life has to go on. She finds that it's meaningful to work as a volunteer in the hospital because it can make others relax and be happy. What's more, everyone in the hospital likes her. On July 10th, 2024, workers and volunteers from the hospital had a birthday party for Wu to celebrate her 90th birthday.

How to Organize a Successful School Clean-Up Day 

A school clean-up day is a great way to make the school environment cleaner and more beautiful. It also helps students develop a sense of responsibility and teamwork.  Here are some tips to help you organize a successful school clean-up day.

First, form a planning team.  The team can include students from different grades and classes, as well as some teachers. The team's job is to make a detailed plan for the clean-up day. For example, they need to decide the time, place, and tasks of the clean-up.

Do you know that taking good care of gardens can be a way of doing charity? That's what the National Garden Scheme (NGS) (国家花园计划) has been doing. The organization opens over 3,500 private(私人的) gardens in England and Wales for people to visit, and raises money through tickets, tea and cakes.

The NGS has a rich and interesting history. At a meeting in 1926, Miss Elsie Wagg came up with the idea of raising money for district (地区) nursing through the nation's obsession (沉迷) with gardening. A year later the NGS began to work and garden owners were asked to open their gardens for "a shilling (先令) a head". As a result, 609 gardens opened and a total of £8,191 was raised that year.

During the past century, the number of gardens grew, so the NGS was able to help more charities with a larger amount of money. Thanks to the kindness of garden owners, volunteers and visitors, it has donated a total of £70 million to nursing and health charities so far. It made a donation of £3.5 million in 2024 and about 70 pence (便士) in every £1 (1 pound=100 pence) went straight to organizations like Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen's Institute of Community Nursing.

The National Garden Scheme doesn't just open beautiful gardens for charity. Its Gardens and Health programme also shows people the important role of gardening and gardens in helping open a path to health.

In our school, we pay much attention to students' sense of responsibility and kindness. We believe that learning to help others is an important part of students' growth. Therefore, we have many volunteer activities and professional first aid courses to help students learn to help others and protect themselves. Here are some of our activities and rules. 

First Aid Courses: We have first aid courses every term, and the courses are divided into basic and advanced levels. The basic level is for all Grade Eight students, and the advanced level is for students who are interested in emergency treatment. The courses are taught by doctors from the nearby hospital who have many years of experience. Students learn how to deal with nosebleeds, burns, cuts and other common accidents. They also learn how to call for help, give basic first aid and even deal with some simple emergencies, like heart attacks. These courses help students protect themselves and others in danger and develop a sense of responsibility. 

Volunteer Activities: We have different volunteer activities every month, and all students are encouraged to take part in them. For example, we go to the old people's home on the first Saturday of every month. We help the elderly clean their rooms, talk to them, read newspapers for them and even help them go to the hospital for physical examinations. On the 15th of every month, we go to the primary school to help the younger students with their homework, especially those who have learning difficulties. We also collect old clothes, books and toys for the poor children in remote areas every term and organize charity activities to raise money for them. 

Volunteer Rules: All volunteers must follow these strict rules. First, be on time for the volunteer activities and don't be absent without permission. Second, be kind and patient to the people we help and respect their habits and feelings. Third, don't make noise or do something bad during the activities, and keep the environment clean. Fourth, follow the instructions of the activity leader and work together with other volunteers. 

These activities and rules help students become more caring and responsible. They not only help students learn new skills but also let them experience the happiness of helping others. We hope every student can join us and make a difference to the world.

My dad works for an aid organization. He and his workmates give 1 aid to the hungry people in the poor areas. Last weekend, I went with 2 to experience his daily work. I was there simply to hand people a leaflet. The job was 3 and I wasn't having fun.

My Sunshine Break

In the past, over the break times between classes, Xiao Jingsheng from Beijing Shangdi Experimental School often rushed to the toilet and back to class with no time for anything else. But now things have changed because of longer breaks. "I have more time to rest and share interesting things with my classmates," said the 14-year-old boy. 

Starting this September, students at primary and middle schools in Beijing have longer breaks between classes, changing from 10 minutes to 15 minutes. The aim is to encourage students to spend time outdoors for their physical and mental (心理的) health. 

To allow children to enjoy break-time activities, some schools have mixed break times with labor education by opening planting areas and animal breeding zones (饲养区).

Some schools have opened up activity areas both indoors and outdoors. At the School Research Center, the ground floor of the teaching building is built as a biology lab for students to study the life of animals and plants. The second floor is designed with spaces for free reading and chess games. "We have welcomed new friends—some ducks and rabbits to our school!" said Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing 101 Middle School Kuangda Campus. "There are fewer students sitting at their desks during longer breaks between classes. Some play with these cute animals, while others exercise on the playground. When we get closer to nature, we feel pleased and relaxed." As the break time is longer, making sure everyone is safe is also important. PE teachers from the school keep an eye on students playing on the ground. "Sometimes the ground can be wet in the morning, so we remind the students to do more upper body (上肢) exercises to avoid running and slipping (滑倒)," said one PE teacher.
