It was called the Silk Road because one of the most important products traded was silk from China. People throughout Asia and Europe liked Chinese silk. The Chinese sold silk for thousands of years and even the Romans called China the "land of silk". Besides silk, the Chinese also sold tea, salt, and sugar. Most of what was traded was expensive products.

Businessmen traveled in large groups to be safe. They would also have many guards (护卫) with them to protect them. Camels were popular animals used by businessmen at that time because much of the road was through dry land.

Although there was some trade between China and the rest of the world for some time, the silk trade grew greatly during the Han Dynasty (朝), which ruled from 202 BC to 220 AD. Later, under the rule of the Yuan Dynasty set up by Kublai Khan (忽必烈) of the Mongols (蒙古人), trade from China along the Silk Road would reach its highest point. During this time the Mongols controlled a great part of the trade road and Chinese businessmen could travel safely.

Here are some fun facts about the Silk Road: 1. The Silk Road was over 4,000 kilometers long. 2. Marco Polo (马可·波罗) traveled to China along the Silk Road. 3. Not all that was traded along the Silk Road was good. It is thought that the Black Death (黑死病) traveled to Europe from the Silk Road. 4. Very few businessmen traveled along the whole way. Products were traded at many cities and trade posts along the way. 5. There wasn't just one road, but many roads. Some were shorter, but more dangerous. Others took longer but were safer.

On my 35th birthday, I gave myself my first skateboard. Most of my friends and family thought I was crazy, but only I knew why.

Two years ago, I accidentally fell down a 12-meter waterfall and broke my pelvis (骨盆) . I went from using a wheelchair to using crutches (拐杖), then to trying to walk a block, and finally walking miles. Physical activity became even more important in my life. So why not make it enjoyable? I've   wanted to learn to skateboard since I was a kid, but most of my time and energy went into dancing. In my opinion, skating was actually very similar to dancing.

For a long time, I tried to learn skating on my own. I had no idea what I was doing and always feltawkward when many strangers saw me skating or simply trying to keep my balance. That fear of being judged often stopped me from just getting out there for practice.

One day, my friend Monica and I met some of the members of GRLSWIRL, a skateboarding club. They were so friendly that we wanted to be part of it. This club was amazing. Even though everyone there was better than me, they were happy to help and excited to see me overcome challenges. There, I gradually became more confident.

For me, a big part of skating was overcoming my PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Falling is a huge part of skating, but because of that accident, it was really hard for me to overcome it. However, the more I learned from every little fall—allowing my body to understand that it was OK, and that I could drop and get up again—the less my PTSD took over. The more I skated, the better my body and mind felt. Although I started skating for therapy (治疗), I never imagined it would open up a new world of excitement and possibilities for me.

The history of foods is never simple. Think of ice-cream, many people see it as a Western dessert. However, this sweet treat actually came from China! In the Zhou Dynasty, Chinese people began to store winter ice to enjoy in summer. In the Song Dynasty, people started to make binglao — it just means "ice cream" in English. People often compare roujiamo to hamburgers, a symbol of American food! Many people call it the "Chinese hamburger". But in fact, the areas of Venezuela look more like the twin brother of roujiamo!

Food is a bridge between cultures. When foods cross borders, sweet things can happen.

She and Her Girls, a 23-episode TV series based on Zhang's real-life stories, concluded its broadcast on China Central Television's CCTV-1.
