Mobile phones can take your attention away when you' re trying to focus on something. That's why the Dutch government is banning them in classrooms, at least.
The government has announced that from January 1st, 2024, students will not be allowed to use their mobile phones in classrooms, unless they are needed for medical reasons.
Robbert is the education minister of the Netherlands. ▲He said that although mobile phones are a big part of our lives, there is no need to have them in the classroom. "Students need to be able to concentrate and need to be given the chance to study well. Mobile phones are a disturbance, scientific research shows. We need to protect students against this," he said.
The ban has come about through an agreement between the government education department, schools, and relevant organizations. At first, it will be left up to schools how they enforce. If the ban doesn't work, legislation and binding rules may be introduced before the summer of 2024.
★"We are going to look very closely at whether this decision works," Robbert said. "Of course, there could always be a legal ban. But I actually believe that we can arrange this together. "
The move follows similar steps taken recently in Finland, a country that is widely regarded as having one of the best education systems in the world and which is also the birthplace of one of the most important companies in the development of mobile phones.
The Netherlands is not the first country to introduce a ban like this. In 2022, Italy took similar steps. France has also had a ban in place since September 2018. France bans mobile phones from schools for children between 3 and 15 years of age, and China introduced a similar ban in 2021.

Slang would not be acceptable at some schools in England. Usually, it starts with a word students aren't allowed to use at the beginning of sentences. You see, a school has made a list of words and phrases, including slang words, which students aren't allowed to use in the classroom. Some of the words and phrases that must not be used at the start of sentences include" No" and" You see". Banned slang includes the phrases" He cut his eyes at me" and" That's a pain in the neck". The school has said that these phrases were appearing in students' work and that it's important they express themselves "clearly and accurately". However, some language experts say this is unfair.
Some people say there are situations when it isn't proper to use certain words or phrases in school. When students are in the classroom, they should be learning how to use language properly, so that they can better express themselves in the future. They can still use slang outside the classroom, but schools should be a formal setting for formal languages, both spoken and written. Using slang too much could mean that students don't develop a wide vocabulary. They then risk being misunderstood by people who don't understand these phrases.
Others think language is always developing. Words take on different meanings and new phrases are developed to help people better express themselves. Words always come in and out of fashion. Slang is a valuable part of this process. Teaching students about the English language should include teaching them about all the different ways it has changed over the centuries.
Trying to avoid slang could have a worse influence on students' education because it might prevent them from expressing themselves well. There's no single way to speak, and schools should celebrate people's differences. Banning slang could make students feel uncomfortable and hinder their learning.
