Our son is my newest "Hockey (曲棍球) Hero". He plays goalkeeper on his small hometown ice hockey team.

On 27 April, 2024, a powerful tornado (龙卷 风) struck Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The tornado occurred around 3:00 p. m. and caused great damage to Zhongluotan and four 1 villages. According to the experts, the tornado was at level three, which means it's 2 strong tornado. They 3 found out that tornado's impact path was more than 1.7 kilometres, with a maximum (最大的) impact width of about 280 metres.

Artemey Melnikov, a visitor from Belarus, played a game of chess with a robot produced by China' s SenseTime during expo. "This is my (one) time playing chess against a robot, " he said. "It noticed my mistakeswithin seconds,  I am deeply impressed (印象深刻).

Famous writer and cartoonist Tsai Chih-chung, may already be 73 this year, but he has no plans to slow down or live a more "normal "life.

Silk is a thin yet strong material made by silkworms for their cocoons (蚕茧). It is made into soft, smooth cloth. Silk  (invent)in ancient China and played an important role in Chinese culture and its economy for thousands of years. 

The idea for silk first came to Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor, while she was having tea in the garden. A cocoon  (fall)into her tea and came apart. Leizu then discovered  to put the silk together to make a line. She also invented the silk loom(丝织机)that joined the lines into a soft cloth. Soon her silk-making skills were then passed onto the rest of China. 

Silk cloth was extremely  (value)in ancient China. At first, only members of the royal family were allowed to wear silk.  (wear)silk was an important status symbol. Ordinary people were not allowed to wear silk. 

Silk soon spread to kings and rich people in other countries would pay high prices for it. The Chinese managed to keep the process of making silk secret for over 1, 000 years. However, it finally spread to other countries when two   (travel)took some silkworm eggs out of China. They hid the eggs  (secret)inside their bamboo walking sticks. 

Silk was such an important product from China that it lent its name to the trade route  Europe to China. Along the Silk Road, goods like spices and metals were traded. People also shared knowledge about science, art. The Silk Road had a big effect on the world that we can still see today. 

One day, my Chinese coworker told me, "You're on fire. "Seeing my puzzled face, she added, "You have inner heat—shang huo. ". A friend missed a party because of it. A student skipped class for the same reason. Even at dinner, we couldn't order spicy food because someone had "shang huo. "

Curious, I asked a friend. She explained that shang huo happens when the body has too much yang, creating an imbalance with yin.  Yin and yang are two opposite energies that work together to keep us healthy. When yang grows too strong, signs of inner heat appear. 

. Shang huo often starts by eating too much salty, sweet, spicy food. Sweets, alcohol, and cold foods can make it worse. According to a doctor in Beijing, avoiding hot and spicy foods is key to preventing shang huo. 

Shang huo can cause many signs in the body. You can see problems like red skin, nosebleeds, and mouth pain. You may also feel tired, not want to eat food, have a sore throat, or feel sad and weak. . 

To get better, you need to cool down the heat —jiang huo. People should not wear too many clothes and should eat foods that can make the body cooler. Although cold foods might help for a short time, they can make things worse later. . . The best way to cool the body is by sweating properly and drinking plenty of water. 

In southern China's Guangdong Province, the lychee orchards(荔枝果园)are going through a smart change. A University has worked with local governments and tech partner Yushu Technology to use artificial intelligence(Al)in Gaozhou, a huge lychee-growing area. 

In April, 2025, their smart farming system found that 70%of the lychee flowers had fallen in one orchard. It then made a "prescription"(处方)map to guide farmers where to use fertilizer(肥料) and control harmful insects. In the past, farmers mainly depended on their own experience. 

This work  is part  of a  bigger"AI+agriculture"project. Drones, satellites, and ground sensors (传感器)are used to watch 6, 800 mu of lychee trees. Yushu Technology helps by dealing with large amounts of data and using AI models to study tree health and predict harvests. The system can find problems like harmful insects with a 95%correct rate. A simple mobile app allows farmers to call for drones, upload photos, and get expert advice. Even farmers with little tech knowledge can easily use it, helping them make better farming decisions. 

The AI system brings real benefits. It helps farmers react quickly, saving trees and reducing labor. Fruit quality has improved because of better harmful insects control and care. Each tree now has a QR code(二维码)showing its growing conditions, making lychees easier to sell at higher prices. Some farmers even sell their fruits before harvest by showing buyers the data. 

This smart farming model is not only improving incomes but also bringing young people back to farming. Local leaders hope to spread the "Gaozhou experience"to other places, helping more farmers and villages achieve better growth and life.

Former basketball star Yao Ming visited the North Campus of Shenzhen Senior High School to mark World Book Day and start a new reading activity on April 23, 2025. 

This day was also the 10th Shenzhen Young People's Book Reading Day, and the city launched a new program "One Hour Screen-Free Every Day. "The program encourages people, especially young students, to put away their phones and tablets for one hour each day. Instead, they are invited to read paper books or enjoy outdoor activities. 

Yao Ming has been speaking up about the harmful effects of too much screen time on children. 

He hopes more young people will explore the real world, enjoy sports, and develop strong reading habits. 

During his visit, Yao spoke to students about his love for books like China's 5, 000 Years and The World's 5,000 Years,which influenced him deeply as a child.He also shared that top athletes need not only strong bodies but also strong minds, which come from reading and learning. In his speech, Yao said the program is not against technology. "We just want to find a healthy balance between online and offline life, "he explained. 

Shenzhen has long worked to build a strong reading culture in the city. It has opened many public libraries in neighborhoods and schools, as well as 24-hour book corners along busy streets. Every year, the city organizes Reading Month to encourage more people to enjoy books. Now, to support the program, Shenzhen will publish a monthly list of recommended paper books and fun reading or outdoor activities for families and schools. More schools are joining the program, and many students have already taken part. 

When I was a child, my brothers and I would take turns living with our grandparents during summer vacation. We always looked forward to that special week 1 with them. Both of them were kind, and they truly showed us 2 in every way—not just by giving gifts. My grandfather was the one who influenced me the most.
