Tom，Jim，and Ted are cousins. They study in the same school. They usually go to the countryside to visit their grandparents at weekends. 

Their grandparents have a farm. Last weekend，Tom，Jim，and Ted went to the farm to see their grandparents by bike. They assembled at Tom's home at 2：00 p. m. after lunch on Saturday and started their trip. It is a long way from Tom's home to the farm. They took a lot of food and drinks such as bread，water，eggs，bananas and so on.

 Yuan Longping is a great scientist. He was born in a poor farmer's family in 1930. He  (complete) his university studies in 1953.  that, Yuan began his teaching career at an agricultural school in Anjiang, Hunan Province. In the 1960s, there   (be) a lot of natural disasters(自然灾害) in China. Many people died because  food shortage. So he decided to learn to grow rice and came up with the idea of hybrid rice. 

Since then, he has tried his  (good) to research and develop better rice. In 1964, he found  natural hybrid rice plant that was better than others.  

In 1973, Yuan successfully developed a special type of long-grained hybrid rice. The  (introduce) of this new product made China a leader in rice production. 

Yuan didn't stop  (he) research. He led his team to conduct a  (success) experiment in planting rice in the Dubai Desert. This is the first time that rice has been grown in a desert. It helps the people  live in the desert areas produce more rice. In addition, it improves the environment of desert areas. 

Nelson Mandela (曼德拉) was the former president of South Africa. He was one of the world's greatest  . In 1993, he won the  Peace Prize. 

Mandela was  in a small village in Transkei in South Africa on 18 July, 1918. When he was 9, his father died of . He had a difficult time when he was young. He was in prison (监狱) for 27 years, because he led the anti-apartheid movement (反种族隔离运动). He was  to leave the prison in 1990. Mandela was free. Then in 1994 he became president of South Africa. 

Even in the worst  in prison, Mandela didn't  himself up. He did exercise every day, and planted many vegetables. He loved his country and devoted all his  to it. People chose him  the greatest South African in 2004. He also did a lot for the peace of the world. Mandela  away in Johannesburg last year, at the age of 95. 

Who is the old man? I believe you must know him very well without me saying anything. . Yes, he is Yuan Longping, a famous farmer and scientist. People call him the "Father of Hybrid Rice". But the farmers call him "Rice Bodhisattva(米菩萨)". Some people even think that his achievement is as important as the "Four Great Inventions" in ancient China. Someone said his name was worth more than 100 billion yuan. 

Many people think Chinese people hate the rich, . But a lot of people support Yuan Longping. More and more people hate Wang Shi who only gave out ten yuan at the Sichuan earthquake, but many speak highly of Yuan Longping. No people will hate such a great scientist. He is a real hero to the farmers. When we asked him how he felt that some people on the Internet called him "the scientist of people"， the old man said, "I am not fit for it. I am only a science worker. . " "What is your dream next？" the reporter asked. The old man said, "I want to make rice as tall as sorghum(高粱), ^,each rice as big as a peanut. I want to plant my rice in Taiwan. " . "We must keep our body, spirit, emotions healthy. We must not only have rich knowledge but also have good thoughts，" he said. 

Dou Kou，a Chinese boy，is called "the youngest writer in the world". He has written 3 books. 

Dou Kou was born in Jiangsu Province in 1994. When he was 7 months old，his parents started working in over 30 different cities，such as Xi'an and Shenzhen. This kind of life gave him many things to think and write about. 

When Dou Kou was 9 months old，he could speak. At the age of one, he could say five to six hundred words. At 3，he could look up words in the dictionary. At 4，his father taught him how to learn something by himself. His parents like reading very much. So does he. At the age of 5，he began writing fairy tales (童话). 

His fairy tales are all from his life. One day，he found many mice in the house. They not only ate their food but also hurt his mother's hand. So he thought，"If we give mice the stomachs of cows，they'll eat grass and they'll be helpful to people. " This was his first fairy tale Change Stomachs for Mice. 

At 6，he wrote a novel about his own life in different cities with his parents. 

Now，he studies well in a middle school. He has written his third book called Eyes of Childhood. He says，"I am not different from other children. I just wrote several books. "

Fame troubled Marie Curie and also her husband, because science was their world of and in this world of science fame and honor to persons had no value. One day when a writer for a newspaper tried to ask Marie about herself and her thoughts and her beliefs, she answered him, " In science we must be interested in things, not in persons. " Much of the real  character and spirit of this unusual woman is found in these few words, which she was later often to repeat. One evening, at a big party, a friend asked her if she would like to meet the King of Greece, who was also a guest. She answered in her simple manner, "I don't see the value of it. " Then, seeing that she had hurt the feelings of her friend, she quickly added, "But … but … of course, I shall do whatever you please. Just as you please. "

When he was 12, his parents died. He was alone and didn't get on well with others. People always laughed at him. No one showed kindness to him. His only friend was a dog named Tiger. He gave his dog enough to eat and drink, but sometimes he was not polite to it. He didn't know that an unkind word sometimes could cut one's heart like a knife. 

One day as he walked down the street, a young lady was walking in front of him. Suddenly one of her bags dropped from her arms. As she stopped to pick it up, she dropped other bags. He came to help her. "Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy!" she said kindly, smiling. 

A special feeling came to him. These were the first kind words he had ever heard. He watched her until she went far away, and then he whistled (吹口哨) to his dog and went directly to the river nearby. 

"Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy!" he repeated the woman's words. Then in a low voice he said them to his dog! Tiger raised its ears as if it understood. 

"Umm! Even a dog likes it!" he said. "Well, Tiger, I won't say unkind words to you any more. " Tiger waved its tail happily. 

The boy thought and thought. Finally he looked at himself in the river. He saw nothing but a dirty boy. He washed his face carefully. Again he looked. He saw a clean nice boy. He was amazed. From then on, he had a new life. 

After telling this, the businessman stopped for a while, and then he said, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is the very place where that kind woman planted in me the first seed (种子) of kindness. All of us should learn about kindness. What a great power it has!" 

If you show kindness to others, you will be an able man. 

Charles Chaplin was born in London on 16 April, 1889. His parents were music hall actors. The Chaplin family were very poor, and life was difficult in London. Charlie, as he was called, used to do his mother's job in the theatre when she was ill. 

When he was only 17 years old, Chaplin got his first real job as an actor. What he did was to do silly things to make people laugh in the theatre. Seven years later he went to the USA. And over the next four years, he formed his own way of art. He developed the character (角色) of a homeless gentleman which became very popular. 

From the 1920s to the 1950s, Chaplin made his most famous films. The film Modern Times (1936) shows his care about the modern industry workers. Many of his films describe the poor life and hard time of the working people during that period. 

Although Charlie Chaplin was British, he lived in the USA until 1953. But he never got US nationality. Then Chaplin, his wife and his five children had to move to Switzerland where he lived until he died. When he was 83 years old, he won his only Oscar for the music he wrote for the film Limelight. He was named Sir Charles Chaplin at the age of 85. Charlie Chaplin died in Switzerland on 25th December, 1975.
