At Friends School, conflict resolution conferences (冲突解决会谈) are very common. They are a big part of the school's culture

For example, one day in Spanish class, Maya pulled Simone's hair. After class, they had a conflict resolution conference. They sat at a table with their teacher, Christina Talberg in the hallway.

Before they began talking, their teacher asked them to go over rules for their conversation. Simone said, "Don ‘t talk over other people." Maya added, "Be kind and respectful."

Maya said she couldn't remember why she pulled Simone's hair. But she admitted that she did. "Could you not pull my hair again?" Simone asked. Maya agreed, and the two girls went back to class.

Caroline Schnieders runs the programme. 60. She says solving conflicts is the most    important thing. "We take time to solve conflicts so that we can focus on learning," she explains, "Kids learn that people think differently, and we have to sit down and listen to each other.

The programme has been at Friends School for over forty years. A graduate named Margot said the skills she learnt at school helped her solve conflicts outside of school, too.

Martin was usually a good , but at one event, he got very nervous and forgot some parts of his speech. So, he did not want that to happen again.

He thought about what went wrong. He realized that he had been too on himself  he had been been worrying about his performance (表现) all along. Before the speech, he could not calm . During the speech, he kept checking and correcting himself.

Martin made a  to learn to stay calm under pressure. To do this, he began  in front of others. Before each practice, he had a short routine: he would take a few deep  and say a calming word to himself. This helped calm his racing heart.

Finally, Martin entered a school speech contest (比赛). He focused on his speech not his worries, and spoke  and confidently. After the speech, he won  award for "Most Improved Speaker". After winning, Martin felt very proud of   and grew more confident.

Li Hui lives in Beijing. She used to work as a test engineer and spent all day 1 . in front of the computer in the office. Long-term sitting caused health problems for her. She decided to improve her health through hiking in the 2 .

During a hike,  3 Li Hui was walking down the mountain, the sun started to set (落山). So she ran fast to the foot of the mountain before it got 4 . She discovered that trailrunning (山径越野跑) was more efficient. This experience made her fall in love 5 the sport.

There are different kinds of jobs in the world. But how should young people choose the right one? That often worries them. "Finding a job" is not the same as "choosing a job". Many young people can't get right jobs. 

First, it is important to know what kind of person you are, what special qualities (品质) you have and what you are interested in.  .If you like art and enjoy looking at pictures, that is an interest. But if you can draw a horse and it looks like a horse not a big dog, that is a skill.

"Of the three skills — skill with people, skill with words and skill with things, which is my best skill?"

After finding out your best skill, the next step is to research (调查). To find out as many different kinds of jobs as possible. You can go to the library and read books and newspapers for advice. . And it's good to ask your family what they think of their work.

The last step is to trust (信) your own ideas and your own thinking! It is your own life. Just find the job you really like.

Last weekend, James and Allen decided to cook fried chicken for the first time. James poured some oil into a pan, turned on the stove, and then left to get chicken from the fridge — he forgot the oil was heating. Suddenly, smoke rose from the pan, and the oil caught fire.

James froze at first, then shouted in fear. "Water! Let's use water to put it out!" he cried and reached for the water bottle. But Allen stopped him quickly. "No! Water will make oil fires worse!" Allen remembered what he learned in the school first-aid class. He told James to turn off the stove at once, then ran to the first-aid box to get the small fire extinguisher.

With Allen's guidance, they pointed the extinguisher at the base of the fire and pressed the handle. In less than 10 seconds, the fire was gone. Their dorm manager, Mr. Smith, heard the noise and came over. After checking, he said, "You did the right thing — most people make the mistake of using water for oil fires. Your first-aid class really helped."

From that day on, James and Allen never left the stove unattended (无人照看) when cooking. They also shared their experience with classmates to remind everyone of first-aid rules.

When it comes to free-time activities, people have many choices. Some prefer creative hobbies, while others enjoy physical activities.

Yaming, a 12-year-old boy, is a middle school student from Loudi. He spends hours practising calligraphy every week. At first, he found it difficult to control the brush and form perfect characters. However, he decided not to give up. His grandmother taught him how to write, and he kept practising single strokes to improve his skills. Now, he feels a strong sense of achievement when he completes a beautiful piece. Yaming says, "Calligraphy helps me to relax and express my feelings. It's a great way to deal with stress from school."

Another teenager, Emma, loves ice skating. She started to learn it last year. At the beginning, she was scared to fall and hurt herself. Her instructor encouraged her not to give up so easily. "No one expects you to be perfect from the start," he told her. Emma practised hard and now she can skate gracefully. She thinks ice skating is not only a fun activity but also a good way to keep fit.

The Electronic Guide Dog

A university in Shenyang, China, has created an amazing new robot called the electronic guide dog. This robot can help people who cannot see well to live a better life. It has become very popular!

Zhang Jinyi, a teacher at the university, shared that this electronic guide dog can know faces and understand voice instructions. It can even talk back! The robot uses maps to help guide people indoors and outdoors. It is made to be a friend, helper, and guide.

In China, there are about 20 million people with vision (视力) problems, and it is hard for them to get around. Sadly, there are only about 400 guide dogs available. This means that many people do not have the support they need. The electronic guide dog is like a big encouragement, offering new hope.

Several people with vision problems tested the electronic guide dog. A person called Xu Yanfen said, "This robot is like a true friend. It helps me understand my environment and guides me safely, making me feel braver when I travel alone."

Jiang Yueqiu, from the university, said they wanted to keep improving the electronic guide dog. They hope this robot will help more people in the future, lighting the way for those who need it most.

Ole is a student from Norway at East China Normal School. He first visited China in 2016, and since then, he has  a deep interest in traditional Chinese culture. Recently, he and his team  the Shanghai International Students Dragon Boat Race. It was the team's sixth win in a row and his second time winning the first prize. "I was introduced to the dragon boat racing in the spring of 2024. My teacher noticed my strong arms and encouraged  to try it," said Ole. When he was asked the secret of his success, he replied, "There is no ‘I',  only ‘we'. My teammates are international students coming  different countries. Before we became the champions (冠军), we practiced rowing three times  week, trying to match the strokes (划桨动作) with drumbeat."

"At first, we weren't very good. We did not know where the  was. However, with continuous (不断的) effort, we learned that teamwork is the key. Although we are culturally , we are one team in the race. Before each race, the team would stand in a circle and cheer . Taking part in this sport, we realized the  of cooperation (合作). We trained hard, each stroke bringing us closer to understanding the tradition of the Dragon Boat Festival," said Ole proudly.

During the Zhou dynasty, there lived a man named Bole. He was famous for his ability to know great 1 . People said he could tell at first sight whether a horse was special or not.

What Can We Do When We Are Worried?

Everyone worries sometimes, and those worries may get in the way of living a happy life. It's normal to feel this way, but we don't have to let worries take over our days. 

The first thing we can try is taking a deep breath. It helps our bodies calm down. As we breathe in and out slowly, we might feel our worries start to disappear. This simple act can make a big difference in how we feel right away.

 A friend, parent, or teacher can listen to us. When we say our worries out loud, they often seem smaller than they did before. Sharing our feelings also makes us feel less alone and more supported.

Another thing we can do is keep busy with things we like.  Drawing, reading, or playing games can take our minds off worries. When we do things we love, we don't think about our worries as much, and we can enjoy the moment.

We can also make a plan for what's troubling us.  Taking one small step at a time can help us feel more in control. If we break things down, we may find that those worries are easier to deal with than we thought.

Worries are part of life. Everyone feels them now and then. However, by breathing, talking, doing what we love, and making a plan, we can calm our worried minds and get back to enjoying life.

The Yangtze Finless Porpoise (江豚) is a kind of cute animal living in the Yangtze River. It was named water pig and greedy fish in "Bencao Gangmu" by Li Shizhen. Now people call it smiling angel. But years ago, it was in great danger.

Mr. Li is a 52-year-old man from Jingzhou, Hubei. He used to make a living by fishing in the Yangtze. At that time, he found the water was getting dirtier and the finless porpoises appeared fewer and fewer. His heart was filled with sadness.

In 2020, China started the 10-year fishing ban (禁令) on the Yangtze. Mr. Li gave up fishing at once and became a protector of the Yangtze finless porpoise. Every day, he and other volunteers watched over the river by boat. They picked up rubbish, stopped harmful activities and recorded the number of finless porpoises.

They also told local people the importance of protecting the river and animals. More and more people understood and joined them. Some college students came to help with research. Some artists drew beautiful pictures to call on people to protect the environment.

Now, the water of the Yangtze is much cleaner. The number of the finless porpoise is growing slowly. Mr. Li feels happy and proud. He says he will keep working until the "smiling angel" stays safely in the river forever.

Protecting nature is protecting ourselves. Everyone can play a part in it.

Ever since I was a little child, I have always liked learning words and expressions in other languages. When I was nine, I started studying English at school, and I loved it. I learned a lot about English words and grammar, and when I turned sixteen, I attended a program in Canada. I stayed with a Canadian family for a whole year, and it was one of the best times of my life. Since it is also an official (官方的) language in Canada, I started studying French during my stay. I studied hard, and it paid off. French is a beautiful language.

After I returned to Brazil, I started studying Spanish. I think it is important for Brazilians to learn this language because, here in South America, most countries' official language is Spanish. I now love learning this language, and thanks to that, I now have friends from Uruguay, Peru, and Argentina. Keeping in touch with these friends is a great way to practice the language.

I am also learning Chinese and German. These languages are a bit more difficult for me, but being able to say even a few expressions of these languages is rewarding.

Some people ask me why I spend so much time learning foreign languages. I always say there are many benefits. For example, learning a foreign language improves your memory, introduces you to all kinds of information, helps you communicate with people from different places and cultures and to make wonderful friends, provides you with insight into another way of thinking, makes you a more interesting person, and improves your chances of finding a good job.

So, if you haven't started studying a foreign language yet, my advice is: don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today!
