Good morning, everyone! Welcome to our school. Now you are students of the middle school. All the things here are new. The life here is a little different. I think you must know what you can do and what you can't do. It can help you study well and live happily. There are some rules in our school.

Keep healthy.

Being healthy is important. Tom's family play sports for one hour every day. Tom is in the school swimming club. And his parents run every morning.

Evening time is family time.

They can't watch TV or play computer games after dinner. The family usually sit on the sofas and talk. Tom always talks about his school and friends. Sometimes they take a walk together.

Always say "I love you" and "Thank you".

Tom says "I love you" to his parents in the morning before he goes to school, and in the evening before he goes to bed. His parents say it to him, too. When Tom helps his mother, she says "Thank you". They show their love and thanks all the time.

William Shakespeare was born(出生)in 1564 in England. He was the best playwright(剧作家), the best poet and an excellent actor. He wrote many great plays.

When Shakespeare was young, he liked reading and he wanted to be a writer and poet. He always had his nose in a book. When he left school, he helped his father. At that time, he tried writing poems. He got married(结婚) in 1582 when he was eighteen years old. In 1587 he left his family behind and came to London to achieve his dream. First, he worked as an actor. His life was hard, but he was happy. While he was acting in the plays, he was writing his own plays. He kept reading books, meeting other writers, making friends and learning. Later, he began to write plays for the Rose Theater. People loved his plays so much that they came to watch the plays by lunchtime. By  1592,  London  was  hearing  the  name  William  Shakespeare  again  and  again.

Garfield Minot started making dinosaur models (恐龙模型) at the age of seven. Back then, he made  just for fun. Today, his love for making models  him have a cool dinosaur job.

When he was a kid in Jamaica, his mom often  him to make things out of flour (面粉) when she made bread. It was very 6.

Siene is a firefighter in the USA.It isn't easy to become a firefighter there. Many people try, but a lot of them fail. Also, in the past firefighting was always a job for men. Now there are women firefighters.

When Siene was five years old, it was her dream to become a firefighter. Forty years later, she was the oldest woman to pass a six­week course at the WFPA (女子消防预备学院). The WFPA trains (训练) women in the skills they need to be firefighters. In fact, Siene now trains firefighters there herself.

Starting the course doesn't mean you'll become a firefighter. The course is very difficult, so not everyone finishes the training. They are trained like being in the army. Can you hold a heavy piece of wood for four minutes? How many exercises can you do? Can you lift a 12­meter ladder (梯子)?

You also need other skills. Can you lead a team? Are you a skillful driver? Can you use technology? There are so many more that are a part of firefighting these days. Of course, no one can do them all, but more skills certainly help.

However, you must wait for a chance to work as a firefighter even before passing your course. It seems that lots of women aren't ready to do that. In one year, 50 women got trained, but only three of them are now firefighters. Learning the skills is not enough to become a firefighter. Like Siene, you also need to stick  to your dream.

We can learn a lot about a place, such as its history and culture from a postcard (明信片) and the stamp on it.

In 2005, some postcard collectors from different countries started a project. First, they built a website called www.postcrossing.com. Then people from all over the world could join and become members. The members send each other postcards. As a result, they make new friends and learn about the cultures and history of different countries.

Hello, I'm Meimei. I like cooking and I think I'm1  good at cooking because most people enjoy2   my dishes(菜肴). 

I first started to cook when I left home and went to study in another city. I didn't have much 3  and it was much cheaper to cook my own food. And cooking didn't take much time. It was 4   to cook a meal.

I learned to cook by myself. I used the Internet to5   recipes(食谱). Then I chose some among them and began to cook. I also asked my parents for 6  sometimes. However, when I first began cooking most of my food tasted 7  . But I never gave up. Now, I always 8   my friends to my house and cook for them. They usually eat up the9   I cook.
