我们应该使用首字母缩略词吗？

Abbreviations are short forms of words or phrases. They can be used to save time when writing or speaking. Some abbreviations are acronyms(首字母缩略词), like ASAP for"as soon as possible" or BRB for"be right back". 

Texting on phones and posting on social media have led to an increase in the use of abbreviations. We meet abbreviations every day. For example, the US is an abbreviation for the United States. We call the space agency NASA instead of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Many abbreviations are so common that we use them without thinking. Some people feel they make talking, reading, and writing easier, but others find these short words or phrases confusing(令人困惑的). What do you think? Should we use abbreviations?

Supporters think they make our lives easier. The development of language has never stopped since humans began to speak. If it weren't developing, we would still be saying"thine" instead of"yours" and"thou" instead of"you". Some abbreviations, like"GIF" or"FBI", are so common that it would sound strange to say their full names. Abbreviations can be used to make texts and speeches shorter, faster, and easier to understand. That's useful if you' re in a hurry. For example, typing"BRB" is faster than writing"I' ll be right back. " Abbreviations are also a kind of common language that can help people feel comfortable and closer to each other.

However, others think they' re confusing. If abbreviations aren't used correctly, they can slow you down instead of saving time. For example, if a word or phrase isn't written out in full the first time it's used in a piece of writing, the reader may have to waste time trying to figure out what it means. Abbreviations can also lead to misunderstandings or make people feel left out or embarrassed. If you don't know what an abbreviation means, it's embarrassing to ask someone to explain it. And sure, language develops over time, but some changes aren't for the better. Saying"ty" just isn't as polite as saying"thank you". It just sounds lazy and careless.

Fan Zhongyan was very famous in the Northern Song Dynasty.  Nearly every Chinese student today   his essay(散文) In Praise of Yueyang Tower. They all remember the words:"Be concerned before the world starts worrying; be satisfied only after the world is content(满足的). " In his life, Fan showed this spirit through his  .

Have you ever noticed how the air smells when it starts to rain? The unique smell that comes with rain has a name: petrichor(下雨时的尘土味). It is a special smell that many people enjoy. 

This smell mainly comes from a natural chemical called geosmin(土臭素). Geosmin is produced by certain bacteria(细菌) that grow in warm and wet soil. These bacteria produce geosmin as part of their life cycle. When the weather is dry, more geosmin stays in the ground. 

When raindrops hit the ground, they push small parts of geosmin and release them into the air. That is why we can smell petrichor at the start of a rainstorm. This smell is strongest after a long dry time. 

For many people, this smell means more than just a smell. It brings back memories or makes them feel calm. It helps them feel close to nature. So next time it rains, take a deep breath. It will remind you of the quiet beauty of nature. 

Thunderstorms also bring a different kind of smell. Some people can even notice it before the storm comes. This smell comes from ozone(臭氧), which is found high in the sky. Ozone is created when lightning flashes during a thunderstorm. The powerful energy from lightning breaks apart oxygen(O₂) in the air. Then these parts join together to form ozone(O₃). As thunderstorms develop, their winds carry ozone down to ground level, allowing people to catch its smell. Ozone gives off a smell that feels stronger than petrichor. That is why some people know a storm is coming before it arrives. 

For many years, historians thought the Altar Stone at the center of Stonehenge, England's famous historic place, came from Wales. However, new research suggests its journey was much longer. According to a study published recently in Nature, the stone may have traveled all the way from Scotland—— meaning that builders transported it across more than 750 kilometers around 5, 000 years ago. 

The Altar Stone lies partly buried inside Stonehenge. " For many years, the central stone has been a mystery, lying in what should be the most important part of Stonehenge, " says Joshua Pollard, a historian. 

Stonehenge was built in several steps, beginning around 3000 BC. Researchers believe builders placed the13, 200- pound Altar Stone there sometime between 2620 and 2480 BC. 

No one knows exactly how the builders moved such a heavy stone. Researchers think that people during the Neolithic period used waterways to transport heavy objects. For example, a large stone tool was once moved from Normandy to Dorset. So, it's possible that the Altar Stone was also transported in the same way when building Stonehenge.

However, another historian, Mike Pitts, thinks a land journey is also reasonable. "If you put a stone on a boat out to sea, not only do you risk losing the stone—— but also nobody can see it," Pitts says. "On land, many communities would see the journey, and the stone would become more valuable... as it traveled south. "

Pitts also adds that the study is so important because it shows that ancient groups of people were good at communicating and working together even though they were very far apart.

Putting things off is something a lot of students are troubled with. Between schoolwork, after-school activities and everyday worries, there are too many things you have to deal with every day.   You might start falling behind and your grades might drop. Here are some methods to help you. 

Divide Big Tasks into Smaller Ones.One smart way to fight back is to break big tasks into tiny pieces. Huge projects can feel like mountains. But if you divide them into smaller steps, you will feel less afraid.   Just tell yourself, "Today, I' ll choose my topic and write a little. I' ll take care of more tomorrow. " Step by step, it gets done. 

The Work-and-Rest Method. The"work and rest" way is also a smart choice for being productive. Set a timer for 25 minutes—— go all in, full attention.   Have some cookies. Walk around. Once you get going, it's easier to keep it up. 

Build a Quiet Space.  Put away your phone and any kind of toys. Find a quiet place where you won't get interrupted(打扰) at all. The less noise there is, the more easily your brain can focus on things. 

Reward(奖励) Yourself to Keep Going. And don't forget to treat yourself. For example, you can listen to your favorite song, or watch an interesting TV program. These little things keep you going.  Finally, you are sure to see the payoff.

Have you ever seen earthworms(蚯蚓) on the ground after a rain? Many people might think they are small and ugly animals. However, these small ugly animals are very important in nature. There are some facts you may not know about them. 

Australia is home to around 1, 000 types of earthworms. These earthworms come in different colors—green, blue, deep red and so on. And they live in the soil in many places, such as gardens, parks, and even streets. If you dig into the soil, you can find five to eight different types of earthworms. Some earthworms are so small that you can't see them with your eyes. But others can reach up to three meters long!

These small animals are the key to rich soil that helps almost everything we eat grow. In a 4, 000-square-meter area, earthworms can turn over up to 50 tons of soil each year. They dig tunnels(地道) underground, which let air enter and help with drainage(排水). These tunnels are good for plants. Earthworms also produce waste that fertilizes(使肥沃) the soil and helps plants grow. Besides, they provide food for birds and other animals. 

Earthworms love a dark and wet environment. They breathe through their skin(皮肤), but to make that happen, they need to stay moist(湿润的). That's why they can die if they stay in the sun for a long time. 

To help earthworms in your garden, you can create a moist environment for them. Growing plants also keeps the soil wet and gives them a home. This environment is perfect for them because it allows them to live and continue their important work. 

Lost and Found

Once there was a boy, he found a penguin (企鹅) at his door. The boy didn't know where it came from. The penguin looked sad and the boy thought it must be lost. So the boy decided to help the penguin to find its way home. 

He checked in the lost and found office. But no one lost a penguin. He asked some birds if they knew where the penguin came from. But the birds said no. The boy asked the duck. But the duck floated (漂浮) away. He didn't know, either. That night, the boy couldn't sleep for disappointment (失望). He wanted to help the penguin but he wasn't sure how. 

The next morning, he discovered that the penguin came from the South Pole (南极). But how could he get there? He ran down to the harbour (港口) and asked a big ship to take him to the South Pole. But his voice was much too small to be heard over the ship's horn (喇叭). So the boy decided, he and the penguin would row to the South Pole. The boy took out his boat and measured (测量) for its size. They pushed the boat out to the sea. He told stories to the penguin to pass the time. They rowed for many days and many nights. There were lots of stories and the penguin listened to everyone, so the boy would always tell another. They floated through good weather and bad weather when the waves (海浪) were as big as mountains. Finally, they came to the South Pole. 

Then the boy said goodbye to the penguin and left. However, when he looked back, he found the penguin looked sadder (更难过的) than ever before. Suddenly, he realised (意识到) he made a mistake—the penguin was not lost, and it was just lonely. Quickly he turned the boat around and rowed back to the South Pole as fast as he could ...

A Holiday in Australia

Dear Jane,

Yesterday we took a boat to a place called Kangaroo Island. We went very early in the morning. We wanted to have time to see everything.

Kangaroo Island is a national park and one of the few places in Australia where you can see rare animals living in the wild. We spent the morning watching koalas and kangaroos. We saw the babies coming out of their mothers' pouches and feeding close by. It was amazing.

Later in the day we went on a trip to the Seal Bay (海豹湾). We walked on the beach and saw lots of Australian sea lions. They were swimming, eating fish and enjoying the sunshine! We took a guided tour. Our guide was great. He told us all about the Seal Bay. At night we went to the Penguin Centre (企鹅中心). We saw the penguins come out of the sea to sleep in their burrows.

We are staying on the Island for three days. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.

First cat or first dog?

The UK's new Prime Minister (首相) Rishi Sunak just moved into his office at 10 Downing Street. So did his dog, Nova. 

Nova is in front of the camera with UK's prime minister and his wife.  

The 17-month-old labrador retriever (拉布拉多寻回犬) is playful. She loves roast chicken. The prime minister took her to activities and shared photos of her online. Some people said she may overtake (超越) Larry the cat as Downing Street's most beloved animal.    

Different from Nova, Larry is not anyone's pet. He has a job as chief mouser (首席捕鼠官) to the prime minister's house. Larry has lived at Downing Street since 2011. He is now working with his fifth prime minister. He might not catch many rats during his career, but he did catch the hearts of the people. Now he has more than 650,000 fans online.  

How does Larry feel about his new dog colleague (同事)? We don't know yet (依然). But he may not be happy. He once (曾经) didn't get along with Dilyn, the dog of former (前任) prime minister Boris Johnson. What will happen between the pair? Let's see.
