Fashion trends(趋势) are around us, and they can be exciting. A trend used to follow a 20-year cycle, but the latest development of the Internet and clothing business has increasingly shortened the cycle. Now, it seems there comes a new fashion trend every couple of months, but it still follows the same stages:

●A trend is usually first introduced during a big fashion show. Reporters, writers, and some other related people collect what they have learned in the show and predict a trend in the near future. 

●Then the trend is talked about online and finally worn by famous people to promote it and make it more acceptable, which leads to the rise of the trend. 

●Once the trend becomes popular, it will reach the mainstream(主流). Large clothing companies and shops begin to follow the trend so that everyone can get their hands on it. This is when the trend gets to the highest point. 

●After that, the trend usually falls and becomes out of date. However, this is not always the end, as trends happen in broader cycles and most could get popular again. 

Trends can be a great way to try something new and test your style. A survey says some people enjoy following trends because trends bring an exciting feeling in fashion and they love the fresh ideas that trends provide. However, others may not think so, especially when a trend doesn't agree with how they feel about themselves. Trends can be fun, but sometimes prove a waste of money because many simply see trends as brands(品牌). So, should we follow fashion trends?

Clearly, there's no exact answer. Whether to follow trends or not depends on how they go with your values, spending, and sense of self. It does not hurt to watch trend reports but never choose to follow them unless you really think they fit your personal style. 

Most people have experienced the trouble caused by static electricity(静电). It means there is an electric charge(电荷) on an object's surface.  How can you avoid static electricity? Here are some simple ways you can use in your daily life. 

Reduce static electricity at home.  In winter, when you heat your house, the air gets drier at the same time. It's more likely to produce static electricity. A humidifier can make the air more humid. This can stop the electric charge from building up. Besides, growing indoor plants is also a good way to make the air wet. They are like small"humidifiers" in your home. 

 Use lotion on your body after showering and before getting dressed. Lotion can prevent the electric charge from building up on your skin, just like a"protective coat".  For example, you can wear clothes made of cotton. Such clothes do not easily hold static electricity. 

Use quick fixes such as a safety pin. Take a safety pin and pin it to your clothes.  Before touching a metal object (like a doorknob) that might give you a shock, first touch it with the coin or safety pin. This safely discharges the static electricity through the metal object. 

Static electricity can make you uncomfortable, but with these easy tips, you can reduce it and make your life smoother. It only takes a little effort to try these ideas, and your days will be much better. 

[时文·从寒门学子到科研报国]I believe that many of you have heard of Pang Zhongwang, who was added to the list of 2024 annual(年度) people of Touching China on August 16th, 

2025. His story 1 moved many people. Pang Zhongwang is a student from Tsinghua University. He once said, "Our young people should 2 our country through scientific research. "

Growing up in a poor family, Pang Zhongwang 3 with housework at a young age. He often went to the hospital to take care of his mother after school. In his 4 time, young Pang had to collect and sell waste items(废品) to make money to support his family. Although Pang faced many 5 , he never gave up.

Chinese scientists have used special drones with laser sensors to count trees in China. They used the latest laser technology. Since 2015, they' ve collected a lot of data using drones all over China. Then, they used laser technology and AI to study the data and  how many trees there are in the country. 

The study also made a clear map showing where trees grow. It helps check if forests are healthy and how much carbon trees store. 

This research  China's climate goals. The number of trees may grow  big tree-planting projects like the "Great Green Wall". Started in 1978 and planned to continue until 2050, the project aims to plant trees in northern China to stop deserts from growing larger. It already has many trees, making it the world's largest planted forest. But people still discuss if it's really working to  desert spread. 

The technology not only helps count and map trees but can also help China's tree-planting work. With data and smart models, it helps choose  to plant trees. This technology is a powerful tool in support of our environmental goals.

Lauren is a kind girl from Iowa, USA. She started to volunteer when she was 14. She worked at a food bank and helped give out food to people in need. She found there were very few fresh vegetables in the food. "Why not do something to change that?" Lauren thought. 

Lauren told her parents that she wanted to start a garden on their family farm. Her parents supported ( 支持) her. But they had no idea how to grow vegetables. They couldn' t help Lauren. Lauren learnt everything on the internet: What kind of vegetables can she plant? When should she plant them? How much water do the vegetables need? She even took lessons on how to plant vegetables. 

Lauren spent a lot of time in her garden. She worked hard. In the hot summer, she watered the vegetables by hand for about two to three hours every day. She went to see the vegetables every day to make sure they grew well. 

In the past two years, Lauren has grown 15 kinds of vegetables and got more than 3,000 kg of them. She gave them away to the food bank, an old people' s home and a soup kitchen. 

People thanked Lauren for her kindness. "Many people help you out, but it makes more difference when you help other people out. That' s what makes me most happy," Lauren said.

"Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person' s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person," Mason, a volunteer, said. 

National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect chance to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization' s expectations (期望). Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also prevents some from sharing their abilities. 

The following tips can help if you have some of these worries. 

◇ Start out slowly. Don' t add too much pressure. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone' s life. 

◇ Choose an organization with the same interests and common values. 

◇ Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not required. 

◇ Work with a veteran volunteer. He volunteered a lot, so he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization' s expectations. 

◇ Invite a friend or a family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them. 

◇ Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn' t work, don' t give up and you' ll surely find the right opportunity. 

Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people' s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, "Little things can change a person' s life."

Meng Chen is a university student in Beijing. He goes to the Palace Museum almost every day. He tells visitors about the clocks in the Hall of Clocks ( 钟表馆). Meng is one of around 300 volunteer tour guides in the Palace Museum. One third of them are university students as well. They hang around the palace like other visitors, but with red "volunteer" cards on their clothes. 

Meng said he loves spending time in the buildings where 24 emperors spent their whole lives. "Every brick ( 砖) has a story to tell," he said. 

But volunteer work is more than fun. Meng has to study for the job. It took him about three months to remember every detail of the clocks in the clock gallery. 

Volunteer work can be frustrating sometimes. Often tourists turn down volunteer guides. "Too many people are in a rush to finish sightseeing. They don' t have time to listen to us," said Shi Hui. He is a university student who volunteers there like Meng Chen. On his second day, Shi walked around for three hours until he found a man in his 50s who was happy to listen to him. "It' s always fun to have listeners who are interested in your talk," Shi said.

Terry from Kenya, 62 years old, has spent 20 years in the city he now calls home. Having lived in Beijing for more than 20 years, Terry has finally made his Chinese dream come true — becoming a volunteer. 

He often helps tourists ( 游客), gets water for a baby and even helps a neighbour sell cold drinks. "I like helping other people," he said. "This is where I live, where my friends are and where I call home." Terry became interested in Chinese culture as a teenager when he read Tao Te Ching ( 道德经) by Laozi. 

Terry and his family moved to Beijing in 1997, and since then he has lived and worked in Beijing. Now Terry can make traditional noodles and dumplings. 

He likes to chat with people there, especially taxi drivers. "I am more familiar with the lives of taxi drivers than most Beijingers," he said. "When I see their license numbers, I can tell how many years they have worked." 

Terry does not want to leave Beijing. He said, "____. In this sense, Beijing is my home. Now I just enjoy living here."

Volunteers Wanted

Volunteer service is fun and meaningful. It  (help) you make a difference in the world. But do you know how  (be) a good volunteer? Here are some useful  (tip). 

Teach yourself about your volunteer  (organize). Before you start, you should have a clear  (understand) of your volunteer organization. If you know it  (good), you' ll be able to spend more time volunteering and  (little) time asking questions like "Where do I go?" and "What do I do?" 

Be positive ( 乐观的). It' s always important  (work) with a smile. If you do it, the other people will smile, too. Sometimes the volunteer work may make you tired, don' t let that get you down. Think about the  (different) you can make and the people you are helping. You' ll be positive again.
