Do you know of SQ3R? It is a reading method named for its five steps: Survey, Question, Read, Recite (复述) and Review. Many students have begun using this method to better understand what they' re reading.

S: Survey

The survey means to skim (浏览) a book. This step helps you collect the information. Go through the pictures, the titles or tables, if there are any. Read the first sentence. This survey step only takes 5—10 minutes, but it is very important.

Q: Question

The question means to ask yourself, "What' s the book about? What' s the writer trying to tell me?" Once you get an idea of what you' re going to read, you can read with a better understanding.

3R: Read, Recite, Review

★ Read the book, looking for the answers to the questions you have had. Picture what the words are saying in your mind.

★ Recite the main ideas of what you just read in your mind, or write down the main ideas on paper in your own words. Review what you have learned. Make notes to help you review.

Now you have a valuable study tool. Use it to help study for a test. Use it to help remember what you read. Use it to help understand important information.

I arrived home from work, but my mind was still busy. I was going to perform a very important experiment ( 实 验), but I had spent the whole day worrying about it. And I wanted to shake off my worries very much. So after dinner, I made a cup of hot chocolate, sat on my sofa, and opened a page. Almost at once, my mind left behind the experiment and went into a wonderful world different from my daily life. It was exactly what I needed. 

Growing up, I was never a big fan of novels. My classmates would be crazy about the latest novel, while my copy was lying on a bookshelf all the time. Instead, I would choose to read all the books about school lessons. After I started graduate school (研究生院), extra reading didn' t interest me at all, so I spent most of my time at school working on research papers. At home, I was unable to read novels. So I knew that I needed to find a way to enjoy reading again.

To help me stick to it, I made a New Year' s plan: I would read two novels per month. The result was that I loved novels almost at once, along with many unexpected results including ones that were good for my study.

____. Some of the best books I read were historical novels. I learned about life in different countries, as well as difficulties which people there faced during difficult periods in their histories. The books have helped me get a better understanding, with an unexpected advantage (优点): I' ve started to think more deeply about the different types of the scientific problems in my study and could handle them with all my heart. 

My husband built a small two-floor house for our Little Free Library. It looked exactly like our own house. Both of us love reading, so instead of taking boxes of books to a used book sale, we now place them in this little library near the street to share them with others.

Over the past 15 years, thousands of books have been shared through our little library. Sometimes, people also leave DVDs and CDs. Our library is on a busy street near a subway station, so many people pass by every day.

The library has become a special part of our neighbourhood. One man often takes books from our library to share with people at a nearby old people' s home. Other people have left us cards, chocolates, and even a drawing from a local artist to show their thanks.

The books in our library show the diversity of our city. Most books are in English, but we also often see Arabic, French, and Russian books. I even keep some books in languages I don' t understand because I enjoy collecting different ones. Interestingly, the library hasn' t helped us reduce the number of books in our home—we now have more books than ever!

Some people think our Little Free Library competes with bookstores. But for us, this hasn' t been true. We still buy books and use bookstores often. The difference is our Little Free Library has connected us to book lovers and helped us share the joy of reading in our busy neighbourhood.

Reading history books can let us learn from great people in history and live better. A history book that you can' t miss is Historical Records or Shiji. 

Historical Records is the first biographical (传记的) general history of China. Sima Qian, an official during the Western Han Dynasty, wrote it. The book records the events beginning with the Yellow Emperor period and ending with the first year of the Han Wudi period, covering a history of over 3,000 years. 

In this book, I really like the way Sima Qian describes different people. For example, there' s Da Yu, the founder of the Xia Dynasty. He tried so hard to stop a big flood that he refused to enter his home while passing by it three times. His selflessness really moved me. I also hope to be a great person like Da Yu. 

There are also two farmers, Chen Sheng and Wu Guang. They led a group of people against the tyrannical ( 专横的) Qin Dynasty. Their group grew bigger. Although they failed in the end, their story shows that everyone, whatever their background is, can become great if they try their best. 

When I read this book, I could see how Sima Qian made the characters come alive with his words. This makes the book full of strong feelings of love and hate. I love the book.

People usually read e-books on personal computers. Some people like to read e-books  their mobile phones. 

At first, e-books were just for a certain group of  (reader) and most of them were about only a few subjects.  the development ( 发展) of the internet, we can get knowledge and answers to a lot of questions from e-books. This is  the e-book business is rising quickly. E-books have many advantages. First of all, they help us  (save) time. We don' t need  (go) to a bookstore to buy books. We can find the topic we want to know about on the internet. And then we can  (quick) get many e-books on this topic.  (two), e-books help us save money. Some e-books cost us little money. And there are thousands of e-books on  internet. What' s  (many), because of e-books, we don' t need so many trees to make paper books. Also, e-books make reading more  (convenience). You can  (carry) a whole library of hundreds of books with you in a small computer or any e-book reader, without worrying about their  (weigh).

However, e-books give us a new way of reading. That is really good.

My 12-year-old daughter is smart, but she had never read a full book for pleasure. She read books for school,1 getting her to do it was like pulling teeth. On her own, she only read a few comic books. None of these helped her develop the habit of deep reading—with both eyes on the page and2 else going on.

During an eight-day beach holiday, she finished the book before the seventh day. When we got home, she asked for another Roald Dahl book and finished it in two weeks—without asking for more9 . 

Will this lead to her picking up more good books and a lifelong love of reading? I don' t know. But I' ve opened a door to the printed page—a10 , personal place that I hope will serve her for a lifetime. That $100 feels like the best money I' ve ever spent.

Changing our clothes

Do you have to wear a school uniform every day? Do you enjoy wearing it? Some Australian students are trying to change their school's dress code (着装规定).

Schoolgirls at Presbyterian Ladies' College in Sydney can't wear pants. They have to wear a knee-length (及膝的) tartan skirt (格子裙) or dress. It's one of the school's oldest traditions, dating back 100 years. But the girls want to change this strict rule.

They asked the school to add pants as another choice for their uniforms. "We should choose to wear whichever bottoms (下装) we want," they wrote in a petition (请愿书) on change.org. 

Some students think that girls have been held back from taking part in sports and outdoor activities because they have to wear dresses and skirts. "This kind of clothing is impractical (不实用的) in daily life and girls should feel comfortable when coming to school," said one student who signed the petition.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said she understood their situation. "Young girls should be able to show their views. Speaking up on what you feel strongly about is how you make changes," she said. The school is now discussing this matter.

Design your own uniform

Work with someone to design (设计) a school uniform. Make sure that you and your classmates will all enjoy wearing it. It should be practical, comfortable, and suitable for both sexes. It should also look nice and represent (代表) your school.

In Australia

Australia learned many things from England. Their school uniforms look like the English ones very much, but they are more open and light. Students also wear hats in the very hot weather.

In Singapore

In Singapore, almost all the students need to wear uniforms. The colors are different from school to school. The uniforms for boys are shorts or long trousers, with white shirts, while girls wear white blouses and blue or black skirts.

A teenage girl couldn't stand her family rules, so she left home. She wanted to be a star and became famous. But she had a little education and 1 years later, she had to ask for food on the street for a living.

Following the street signs is a simple action to prevent accidents. When everyone is following the rules, the road is more organized and  (safe). Here are a few tips on how to stay safe on road. 

Follow the street (sign). Whether it is a stop sign, a speed sign, or a warning sign, you should follow it. This is always important because they are (place) there for the safety of the people on the road. 

Use the "two seconds" rule. There is no need to catch the driver in front of you  (close). This  (be) a usual cause of accidents. Make sure that you are at least two meters away from the car in front you. 

Focus on driving. People focusing on other activities while driving such as  (read), talking to a passenger, or other things can cause accidents on the road. The drivers should have  (they) eyes on the road while driving. 

The most common traffic violations (违章) include speeding, driving after drinking  not following street signs. Many people don't follow these. Therefore, always remember to be careful when crossing the road. After all, we only live once.
