Around 2,000 years ago, Cao Cao got a birthday gift from Sun Quan. It was a huge elephant. People in the country didnˈt see it before.

Just then, young Cao Chong had a wonderful idea. "I can weigh the elephant!" he said. "Let me have a try. "

Cao Chong asked some soldiers to drive the elephant onto a big boat in the river. When the heavy animal walked onto it, the boat went lower（下降）into the water. After Cao Chong drew a line on the side of the boat where it met the water, the soldiers took the elephant off the boat. Then Cao Chong asked the soldiers to put stones on the boat, one by one, until it went down again and water met the line on the boat. Cao Chong then weighed the stones. He added up（加起来）the weight of all the stones and said, "This is the weight of the elephant. " What a clever way! Cao Cao was very happy with his son. 

In the Western Han Dynasty（西汉时期）, there was a boy named Kuang Heng. He was born in a poor family so he didnˈt have enough money to go to school. Kuang Heng liked reading books very much. But he had to work in the daytime and can only read books during the night. The only problem was that he had no money to buy a candle. So it often took him half a month to finish reading a book. 

One day, he found his neighbour had candles, but the light couldnˈt go through the wall. After thinking for a while, he had a good idea. He dug（挖）a small hole in the wall. Then he could use the light from his neighbourˈs house to read books. 

After some days, there were no books for him to read in his house. Then he went to a rich manˈs house and worked for him without asking for any money. Hearing this, the rich man thought Kuang Heng was silly but still asked, "You meant you would work for me for free. But why?" Kuang Heng answered, "Well, I only want to borrow your books to read. Thatˈs enough. "

The rich man was moved. Kuang Heng read all the books in the rich manˈs house. Finally, he became a great scholar（学者）. 

Once upon a time, a crocodile lived in the river. One day, the crocodile crawled into the desert (爬进沙漠). And he lost his way. Just then, he noticed a young man there. Then he shouted," Hi, friend! Please help me! I couldn't get back to the river. "

On Earth Day and in the days leading up to it, people around the world gather for special events. You may find activities about fighting against climate change, for example, a fashion show with clothes made from recycled materials, an environmental-themed film screening, or a walk in nature. 

A good way to help the environment is to make small changes in your daily life. For example, you can reduce waste by using a reusable lunchbox. You can ask your family to use a reusable water bottle. Also, recycle as many objects as possible, such as bottles, cans, and milk or juice cartons(硬纸盒). 

Planting a tree with your family is another good choice. Trees help clean the air by taking in carbon dioxide(CO₂) and producing oxygen(O₂). With an adult's help, you can ask your local community if they offer free tree-planting events. You can also plant a vegetable garden or help maintain(保养) a community garden. It not only provides fresh food but also helps you build a deep connection with nature. 

Earth Day is a great time to share your ideas about how we can better protect our planet. You can write to your local government and ask them to support clean energy efforts in your area. You can also share your Earth Day plans with your family and friends. Remember, every small effort makes our world a better place. 

In 2025, China's first 10, 000-meter scientific exploration well(井), named Shenditake 1, was successfully completed at a depth of 10, 910 meters underground in the Tarim Basin, Xinjiang. 

Humans have achieved great things by exploring the sky, the sea, and the earth. The"Chang'e LunarMission" explored space and the"Jiaolong Submersible" explored the deep sea.   Shenditake 1, in the middle of the Taklimakan Desert, known as the"Sea of Death", has set a new Asian record for deep earth drilling(钻探), and the well was drilled using China's self-developed tools. 

  From the surface to 10, 000 meters, it took only 279 days, but the final 910 meters took more than 300 days to complete due to hard conditions under the ground. The well met many difficulties such as tool failures, holes falling down, and technical difficulties.   Thanks to them, Chinese engineers overcame these challenges and made this great achievement. 

Shenditake 1 not only reached a record depth but also made important scientific discoveries. It successfully got the first samples(样本) from 10, 000 meters underground in China.   These findings helped us understand the structure of the earth well. 

This success marks an important step forward in China's deep-earth drilling.   Shenditake 1 is a proud symbol of China's scientific and technological progress, engineering, just like its achievements in space and deep-sea exploration. These achievements will encourage more scientists and engineers to continue exploring the mysteries of our planet.

This summer, the students in our class designed a PBL(项目式学习) project about Chinese culture. We needed to present it in English. As a(n)1 of Chinese tea culture, I finally decided on it as the topic for my group. My team members 2 and I became the group leader. 

When I was told that the best team would have the chance to perform at our school's Art Festival, the wish to 3 pushed me to work harder. To make it better, I added some 4 art forms into the speech. Also, as the director, I had to plan everything and 5 it within 5 minutes. I tried hard to prepare for it.
