Jordyn was about to turn eight years old when her mom suggested a new way to celebrate her birthday—donating her gifts to a children' s hospital. 

At first, Jordyn wasn' t sure. But quickly she made the decision because she thought that she had already had everything she needed, but these kids were having a difficult time in the hospital—they needed more. 

Years passed. Now Jordyn is a freshman in high school. She continues doing this to help children with serious illnesses. In April this year, she made her eighth annual (年度的) birthday-gift donation to Baptist Children' s Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. 

Jordyn' s efforts have also encouraged her friends. They thought of some gift-giving ideas. For the young patients, gifts might include toy trains. And for the teenagers, they might be books. 

"It is really happy to see their little smiling faces," said Jordyn. She also added, "I want to keep doing this as long as I can." 

"This lady is in her 60s, lives alone and often needs help," said Chen, 45, a volunteer of "Time Bank". The government in Haikou, Hainan has run the Time Bank programme for 3 years to help make the life of local elderly people easier. 

Time Bank collects the daily needs of the old in communities and then posts the orders on a programme online. Volunteers then take the orders and offer the services to those in need. Each volunteer can get the "time currency (货币)" for every hour of voluntary service they offer. They can use the currency to ask for the voluntary services when they grow old themselves, or give away their currency to others in need of elderly care. 

Wu Meiling helps with the monthly activities of the programme. "Most of the elderly people on the programme are those who live alone, or those in poor health. But the volunteers come from all walks of life, such as teachers, doctors and workers," said Wu. "Time Bank provides a chance for volunteers to get to know each other and learn new skills from others. By exchanging time and skills, members can develop the spirit of mutual aid, save costs and build stronger communities." 

"However, the Time Bank programme needs more changes," said Li Jinling, a leader of the programme. "Many elderly people do not know about the programme or do not know how to order it online. We' ll go on working hard to get more people interested in it." 

Ten-year-old Orion Jean has always known that kindness is important. He often practiced it by volunteering with his family. Last year, after taking part in the National Kindness Speech Contest, he became crazy about it. Now he works to spread kindness everywhere through projects that help others. He calls his campaign (活动) the Race to Kindness. 

When a teacher told him about the contest, Orion had only 24 hours to write, memorize, and record his speech. In it, he talked about the importance of kindness. "Kindness is like spreading hugs around the world," Orion said. He encouraged listeners to join him in doing small, kind acts for others. 

Orion' s speech won the contest. He used his $500 prize to support his first Race to Kindness project, a toy drive for a local children' s hospital. He collected more than 600 toys. After that, Orion wanted to make an even bigger impact (影响). Working with others, he packed meal bags for people in need with a kind message in each bag. Orion also organized several events in his community. In all, he collected 100,000 meals! 

Orion believes that everyone wins this race. He says, "If you' re kind to someone else, it can make their day brighter and inspire them to pass on kindness. And then it just grows and grows, and it can make the world a better place." 

The greatest feeling in the world doesn' t come from receiving gifts or getting good grades in the exams. It starts when you do something for others. You can feel it when you drive for an hour to a hospital to meet the sick children. And you can also feel it when you sit down to comfort your friend after he or she doesn' t pass the exam. 

My friend once took me to a Youth Group meeting in his school. ★    Early that Saturday morning, a group of 15 teenagers began making sandwiches, washing fruit and counting bags of bread. For the first time in my life, I realized that we, the teens, could make a difference. It made me join the Youth Group. 

Now I work at a coffee shop. It' s not the best job, but sometimes it' s worthwhile (值得的). One day, the shop was empty and I was bored. Looking out of the window, I noticed an old man sitting outside. He never came in to buy anything because he didn' t have money. I took a cup of coffee, walked outside and handed it to him. The smile on his face made me happy, and as I walked back into the shop, I paid for the coffee myself. Then I knew how the members of the Youth Group felt every time they helped someone. Knowing that you can help others is great. 

Last week, our school held a big voluntary event. There were some meaningful volunteer activities. 

From Monday to Wednesday, we had a "Help Your Classmates" activity. Some students had difficulty in learning maths, English or other subjects. The students good at these subjects taught them some ways to learn well. There was also a library team. The students in this team helped put the books in order and do some cleaning in the school library. 

On Thursday and Friday, we made some cards with warm words like "You' re really good!" and "Thank you for your hard work!". Then we gave them to the school bus drivers, cleaners and guards. Their happy faces made us happy. 

On Saturday, some of us went to clean a nearby park. We picked up rubbish and cleaned benches (长椅). We were tired after hours of work, but seeing the clean park made us happy. 

Through these activities, we truly understand that helping others brings joy to both them and ourselves. 

Volunteer Activity at Sunshine Animal Shelter

Time: Next Saturday, 9:00 a.m. —4:00 p.m.

Activities: 

1. Cleaning: Clean the animal cages. Make sure they are tidy and comfortable for the animals. 

2. Feeding: Help the workers feed different animals. Follow the rules to give them the right food. 

3. Playing: Spend time playing with dogs and cats. It can make them happy and less lonely. 

What to Prepare:

1. Wear old clothes and comfortable shoes. The work may be a little dirty! 

2. Bring your own lunch. There are no restaurants near the shelter.
