I' m a 16-year-old boy. I love playing chess. My parents didn' t ask me to start. It was my idea. When I was 12, I had nothing to keep me busy during the summer holiday. I was really bored, so I bought a chess set, and soon I fell in love with it. 

It took me a long time to learn the rules. There were some instructions on the box, but I had to read books and watch some videos on the Internet, too. Going to a chess club was an easy way to get help, but I enjoyed learning by myself. 

Soon after, I played my first game with one of my friends. I wanted to do well, but I lost! I didn' t feel bad or get angry with my friend. Instead, I got to know how difficult the game was and I decided to work hard to become a great chess player. 

Now, four years later, that is still my dream. I' m in the school chess club and I practice three times a week. Also, I' m always reading books on chess at home and playing against my computer. 

Next week, there will be a big game and many young chess players will join in it. It' ll be my first big game and I' m really looking forward to showing everyone what I can do. 

Having a hobby is a great way to relax after work or after school. Here are three hobbies for you to try. 

◇ Flower arranging(插花) 

If you like plants, think about flower arranging. Many flower shops have classes for beginners, so you can learn it in one of them. It' s also a good idea to read books or visit websites. After you learn flower arranging, you can use the flowers to make gifts or make your home more beautiful.

Do you dream of being a writer? Well, now it is the right time to make your dream come true. To start with, you don' t need to be very good at writing. Spend some time writing something in a notebook every day. You can also try making a short story. By practicing, you can make your writing better and better. 

◇ Painting

Painting is a fun and relaxing thing, but many people think it is hard. In fact, it is not. At first, you may find it is not easy to draw, but it doesn' t matter. The most important is that when you draw, you are enjoying the beauty of art. If you have a busy life, this is a nice hobby for you to relax. 

Gordon Williams' s hobby may seem strange to people when they come across it for the first time. But it is a traditional craft (手艺). He builds model ships inside old bottles. 

Gordon has always loved ships, especially sailing ships from the old days. His interest in this hobby began many years ago when he visited a museum in Ottawa, Canada, where there was a show of model ships in bottles. Gordon thought the show was wonderful. But he wondered how the craftsman got the ship through the thin neck of the bottle. Gordon decided to find it out. 

He found an old master craftsman who was willing to teach him the necessary skills. First, Gordon takes an old bottle. Then he puts in a layer of putty (一层油灰), carefully shaped and painted, to make it look like the sea. Next, he builds the ship. To get the ship through the neck of the bottle, Gordon holds down the masts (桅杆). Once the ship is inside the bottle, he takes a long, thin tool to raise the masts. 

Gordon has completed well over one hundred models. His wish is to build bigger model ships, such as aircraft carriers. This will be more challenging, as he will have to build the ship actually inside the bottle. His hobby certainly needs time, patience and a steady hand.
