When you look at a mountain with snow on the top, it looks so beautiful. But that can change very quickly if an avalanche (雪崩) happens. 

An avalanche is quite a lot of snow, ice and rocks moving quickly down a mountain, usually on slopes (斜坡) of 30° to 45°. It can move at speeds of 96 km/h to 129 km/h. 

Different things can make avalanches happen suddenly. About 90% of avalanches happen because of human activities. Strong winds, earthquakes, and even animals can also make them happen. 

Avalanches happen all year round. Most of them are small, but in high mountains, such as the Alps and the Himalayas, they can be very large and dangerous. When an avalanche happens, the fast-moving snow, ice and rocks can cover people, all the houses and villages along the way. The snow becomes too hard to move. That can make people under it die of the cold. 

However, what can we do to keep safe if we want to climb snow mountains? Education and right training can help. They can give us useful advice. For example, never start climbing when the snow begins melting (融化), especially in spring. Avalanches may happen in this season at any minute. Wait for at least 2 days to start climbing after a snowstorm. Bring useful tools, like a beacon (立标) to help others find you. Phones sometimes don' t work on mountains. Keeping quiet on the mountains is also important. 

Anyway, avalanches are part of nature. We need to have respect for the mountains and weather all the time.

Yesterday my dad and I went hiking in the mountain. We enjoyed the fresh air and would live in the hotel room for another two days. However, I thought it was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life! A storm woke me up early. I got up and looked out of the window of our hotel. I listened to the thunder and watched the lightning. It wasn' t scary at that time, but it was exciting! 

But then I looked at my phone and saw on the news that a hurricane was coming. I asked my dad what a hurricane was and asked him if he knew what to do. He told me not to worry because a hurricane is just a big storm. We stayed in our hotel room and by the afternoon, there was even more rain. And the winds were getting stronger and stronger. 

In the evening, a hotel worker asked all the visitors to go to the dining hall. When we were all inside, we put tables in front of the doors and then we got down on the floor together in the corner. We waited and waited. The winds got louder, the rain became heavier and then it suddenly went dark. I was so startled that I held (抓住) my dad' s hand. We stayed there for a long time. 

Finally, morning arrived. The storm was over. I felt so happy that we were safe. I hope I will never have a night like that again.

A report says Indonesia did an excellent job in reducing natural disasters ( 灾害) . It came second among 193 countries around the world. 

Indonesia is in a tropical ( 热带的) area and it' s at the meeting of two oceans and continents ( 海洋和大陆). These make disasters happen easily in this country, such as storms, floods and earthquakes. 

On April 26, 2017, Indonesia started Disaster Preparedness Day. The country did it in order to help its people understand disasters better and learn about life-saving skills through the activities. On this day every year, Indonesian people join in different kinds of activities. There are many activities all over the country to help people learn what to do when they face disasters. 

Mahyeldi, head of West Sumatra Province in Indonesia, gave a talk before activities began. He told about the big earthquake in 2009 there. "A large number of people got badly hurt and even died in it. It takes ten years to bring everything back to the way it was before, " he said. "It' s important for us to learn how to save ourselves from disasters. In this way, we' ll know how to act quickly if disasters come," he added. 

In fact, disasters can happen anywhere at any time. Together with Indonesia, let' s get ready before disasters arrive. 

A long time ago, floods often happened. The flood buried ( 掩埋) the land and broke the houses. People felt that they were living in danger every day. 

The flood really harmed a lot of people, so people began to think about how to solve this problem. At that time, a man named Gun led people to control the flood. All he did was to build dams ( 坝) to keep the water out of villages. 

Nine years later, there were still floods. His son Yu went on controlling the flood. In order to control the flood, Yu didn' t return home for thirteen years. In the past thirteen years, he ran everywhere, passing by his home three times. But he never walked into it to have a look. In his opinion, nothing was more important than what he was doing.

Yu learned from the experience of Gun and came up with a better way to control the flood. Together with many people, he dredged ( 疏浚) many rivers. So the flood could pass through the rivers and then go into the sea. The flood finally died down and people went back to their homes.

In February 2007, about two hundred paragliders (滑翔伞运动员) were in Australia to prepare  the World Championship. They included Ewa Wisnierska,  German paragliding champion ( 冠军). One morning, as the competitors were getting ready  (take) off, they noticed that a terrible storm was 4 (come). However, they decided to carry on. After all, these were the  (good) paragliders in the world. 

Unluckily, as the competitors took off, the weather  (quick) became worse. Ewa tried to get away  the storm, but two huge clouds came together and caught her. 

The clouds pulled Ewa up inside the storm like a leaf in the wind. She  (fly) higher and higher, with lightning and hailstones (冰雹) all around her. "I was shaking," she told  (reporter). "The last thing I remember is that it was dark. I could hear thunder all around  (I)." She rose to about 10,000 metres high and then lost all her senses. At that  (high), the temperature was about -40℃ .

Finally, Ewa came out of the storm cloud and headed towards a small farm and landed safely. She fell to the ground, too weak  (call) for help. When her team reached her, she was 60 km away from the place where she took off. She was  (cover) in ice—but alive! 

Ewa was sent to a hospital at once, but a few days later, she competed in the World Championship. "Flying is too fantastic to stop because of an accident," she said.

It was about two o' clock in the early morning. I was sleeping when the earthquake1 .

Jordyn was about to turn eight years old when her mom suggested a new way to celebrate her birthday—donating her gifts to a children' s hospital. 

At first, Jordyn wasn' t sure. But quickly she made the decision because she thought that she had already had everything she needed, but these kids were having a difficult time in the hospital—they needed more. 

Years passed. Now Jordyn is a freshman in high school. She continues doing this to help children with serious illnesses. In April this year, she made her eighth annual (年度的) birthday-gift donation to Baptist Children' s Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. 

Jordyn' s efforts have also encouraged her friends. They thought of some gift-giving ideas. For the young patients, gifts might include toy trains. And for the teenagers, they might be books. 

"It is really happy to see their little smiling faces," said Jordyn. She also added, "I want to keep doing this as long as I can." 

"This lady is in her 60s, lives alone and often needs help," said Chen, 45, a volunteer of "Time Bank". The government in Haikou, Hainan has run the Time Bank programme for 3 years to help make the life of local elderly people easier. 

Time Bank collects the daily needs of the old in communities and then posts the orders on a programme online. Volunteers then take the orders and offer the services to those in need. Each volunteer can get the "time currency (货币)" for every hour of voluntary service they offer. They can use the currency to ask for the voluntary services when they grow old themselves, or give away their currency to others in need of elderly care. 

Wu Meiling helps with the monthly activities of the programme. "Most of the elderly people on the programme are those who live alone, or those in poor health. But the volunteers come from all walks of life, such as teachers, doctors and workers," said Wu. "Time Bank provides a chance for volunteers to get to know each other and learn new skills from others. By exchanging time and skills, members can develop the spirit of mutual aid, save costs and build stronger communities." 

"However, the Time Bank programme needs more changes," said Li Jinling, a leader of the programme. "Many elderly people do not know about the programme or do not know how to order it online. We' ll go on working hard to get more people interested in it." 

Ten-year-old Orion Jean has always known that kindness is important. He often practiced it by volunteering with his family. Last year, after taking part in the National Kindness Speech Contest, he became crazy about it. Now he works to spread kindness everywhere through projects that help others. He calls his campaign (活动) the Race to Kindness. 

When a teacher told him about the contest, Orion had only 24 hours to write, memorize, and record his speech. In it, he talked about the importance of kindness. "Kindness is like spreading hugs around the world," Orion said. He encouraged listeners to join him in doing small, kind acts for others. 

Orion' s speech won the contest. He used his $500 prize to support his first Race to Kindness project, a toy drive for a local children' s hospital. He collected more than 600 toys. After that, Orion wanted to make an even bigger impact (影响). Working with others, he packed meal bags for people in need with a kind message in each bag. Orion also organized several events in his community. In all, he collected 100,000 meals! 

Orion believes that everyone wins this race. He says, "If you' re kind to someone else, it can make their day brighter and inspire them to pass on kindness. And then it just grows and grows, and it can make the world a better place." 

The greatest feeling in the world doesn' t come from receiving gifts or getting good grades in the exams. It starts when you do something for others. You can feel it when you drive for an hour to a hospital to meet the sick children. And you can also feel it when you sit down to comfort your friend after he or she doesn' t pass the exam. 

My friend once took me to a Youth Group meeting in his school. ★    Early that Saturday morning, a group of 15 teenagers began making sandwiches, washing fruit and counting bags of bread. For the first time in my life, I realized that we, the teens, could make a difference. It made me join the Youth Group. 

Now I work at a coffee shop. It' s not the best job, but sometimes it' s worthwhile (值得的). One day, the shop was empty and I was bored. Looking out of the window, I noticed an old man sitting outside. He never came in to buy anything because he didn' t have money. I took a cup of coffee, walked outside and handed it to him. The smile on his face made me happy, and as I walked back into the shop, I paid for the coffee myself. Then I knew how the members of the Youth Group felt every time they helped someone. Knowing that you can help others is great. 

Last week, our school held a big voluntary event. There were some meaningful volunteer activities. 

From Monday to Wednesday, we had a "Help Your Classmates" activity. Some students had difficulty in learning maths, English or other subjects. The students good at these subjects taught them some ways to learn well. There was also a library team. The students in this team helped put the books in order and do some cleaning in the school library. 

On Thursday and Friday, we made some cards with warm words like "You' re really good!" and "Thank you for your hard work!". Then we gave them to the school bus drivers, cleaners and guards. Their happy faces made us happy. 

On Saturday, some of us went to clean a nearby park. We picked up rubbish and cleaned benches (长椅). We were tired after hours of work, but seeing the clean park made us happy. 

Through these activities, we truly understand that helping others brings joy to both them and ourselves.
