The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK is doing something really cool. They are testing tiny cameras that patients can actually swallow（吞）to get checked for cancer（癌症）.Cancer is a terrible disease. The earlier cancer is found, the easier it is to treat. So, the NHS invites people who might be at risk of certain cancers to have a check once or twice a year. Usually,people need to go to the hospital for the checks.

These special cameras are called PillCams. Why？ Because they are put in a small capsule（胶囊）that's easy to swallow,  just like taking a kind of medicine. The capsule also has a tiny light.As it travels through the body,  it takes pictures of the patient's bowel （肠）. The pictures are sent to a small device（装置）in a bag that the patient wears. After the camera finishes its job,  the patient returns the bag to the hospital. Then, doctors can look at the photos carefully to see if there are any problems. The whole process takes 5 to 8 hours, and during this time,the patient can still go about their normal day, doing things like going to work or doing simple housework.

This amazing technology has already been tried in Scotland. Now, it's being tested on 11,000patients all over the UK, including England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Sir Simon Stevens, who is in charge of the NHS in England, said,"What seemed like something from a science fiction movie is now becoming real. These small camneras take two pictures every second as they move through your body,looking for signs of cancer and other health problems." It's so exciting to think about how this new technology can help more people stay healthy!

Social media, like Douyin,  is full of different videos of dogs seeming to react（回应）to their favorite words, like "walk","ball" or "park",but do the pets truly know what is being said?

A new study by scientists inHungary has found that dogs may actually understand words more than was previously（先前）thought． The research team tested 27 pet dogs who knew at least three words for different objects, according to their owners. The scientists played a recording of the owner calling out the name of an object, such as a ball, or a toy. Then the owner held up either the matching thing or an object that did not match the name. Meanwhile,the scientists recorded electrical activity in the dogs' brains.

When the objects and words did not match, the dogs acted the most excitedly.The scientists noticed a sudden increase in their brain activity. They believed the dogs could picture the correct thing in their minds and react when the wrong thing appeared. While dogs may not use languages the same way humans do, the study shows that dogs have the ability to connect words with objects.

This discovery is really exciting. It heIps us understand our furry friends better. For example,if you want to train your dog,you can use clear words. Dogs can learn new words just like how we learn new things in school. Also, this study shows that dogs are smarter than we might think. They don't just reply to our voices; they truly understand some of the words we say. Maybe next time when you tell your dog "dinner time",it knows exactly what's coming!

It was winter in the Cascade Mountains. Most 16-year-olds were preparing for a high school dance, but Rachael had a different plan. She was leading her dog team through a challenging dog-sled（狗拉雪橇）race．Dog sled racing is difficult for any 16-year-old-especially for Rachael, who was blind.

Why was dog sledding so much fun for the girl?"I've always loved running with dogs!"Rachael explained,"After finishing almost every race,I feel pretty good about myself!"

The first day's race started. "Three, two, one,go!" shouted the race official, and Rachael set off. The dogs were tied together with special ropes. During the race,these ropes became mixed up.She had to stop and follow the ropes with hands. This time, her hands weren't enough, so Rachael got her helper, Matt, to help her. After Matt moved the dogs into position, she could continue the race. But unluckily, she was the last to cross the finish line.

The next morning, it was snowing. Just before she started, Rachael, still thinking about yesterday's surprising trouble, bent（弯腰）down and encouraged each member of her dog team.Then,the race started. There were many difficult turns in the course（赛道）.Matt had to use his radio to warn Rachael about them several times during the day. Luckily,after this day's race,she had moved ahead in the competition!

Finally, it was the last day. It was a clear day in the beautiful Cascade Mountains. Rachael couldn't see the wonderful scenery,but she could hear the excited barking of her dogs. At last,she completed the race as the 23rd racer. As she passed the finish line, everybody cheered.

Although she didn't win the race itself, she successfully completed three daysof hard racing.She made it across 300 difficult miles guided by her love of racing. In many people's opinions,this was what made Rachael a real winner!

Although learning a skill might seem difficult at first, mastering something new can be fun.

Everyone needs a favorite place. Today, I want to introduce my favorite place.

Angie is a talented soccer player. Last Sunday, when she scored a goal, she did a victory dance, but the rest of the team was1 .

⑤Sometimes you may find that you can't change the other person's mind, and they may not change yours. Still, you can look for points you do agree on. You may also have a better understanding of each other's opinion, and it's worth the effort because healthy communication builds strong relationships.

A study has found that red squirrels are facing growing competition from grey squirrels. However, a team of scientists is working hard to protect these red squirrels. The team has developed a system (系统) to help them, and the system is being tested in some places. 

Red squirrels have lived in the UK for about 10, 000 years, but there are only around 160, 000 left. They once lived in most woodlands but now they have to live in northern England, Scotland, the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England and Anglesey in north Wales. While there are 2.7 million grey squirrels in the UK. Grey squirrels were introduced from North America in 1876. They are bigger, so they are better at competing for food and areas to live in. They also carry a virus called squirrelpox. This virus doesn't harm grey squirrels but can be dangerous for the red squirrels. 

To deal with the problems red squirrels are having, scientists have developed a system called Squirrel Agent to help increase red squirrel numbers. The new system uses AI, and it has been trained to look at images and tell grey squirrels and red squirrels apart (分开). The system gets it right 97% of the time. 

The aim of the system is to help red squirrels by giving them more food, while stopping grey squirrel populations from getting even bigger. Using the information it has learned, the AI lets red squirrels get to feeders where they can eat lots of food without being with grey squirrels. To stop the grey population getting bigger, the system can offer grey squirrels other food. And there's something on the food that safely keeps grey squirrels from having too many babies, to keep their numbers in balance. And importantly, a human checks that the AI does identify grey squirrels properly.

The wind was strong. Sam Edmunds' hat blew off. His long hair waved in the air. He heard a voice behind him: "Is that a boy or a girl?" He shook his head. "Just one more month!" He said to himself. 

People often talked about his long hair behind his back. Sometimes they laughed at him. But he never felt any shame. The 14-year-old boy from London spent three years growing his hair, because he decided to raise money for a very good cause by having his head shaved (剃发). 

When he last had a haircut, in 2021, Sam raised 3, 200 pounds for a local food bank (where people in need can get food and help). He says, "I always had the idea of doing it again."

Day after day, hope grew together with his hair. Finally, the time came. Sam walked into a barber's shop (理发店). He took off his hat and his hair fell around his shoulders. The other customers were very surprised. "Please cut it short and give the hair," he said. The barber's scissors did their work. Sam carefully put the hair into a bag and walked to the post office. 

This time, Sam is supporting the Little Princess Trust, a charity that provides wigs (假发) to young people who have lost their hair due to medical conditions. And a week later, he received a letter:

In late May last year, strong storms passed through Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA. The floods (洪水) turned roads  brown rivers.

When storm drains (下水道) get plugged up (堵塞), rainwater builds up on the streets. It's the leading cause of weather— related deaths in the United States. A team of local middle school students made a plan for(solve) this problem.

The students, Alyssa Neuber, Bianca Verri and Jose Pirela, were in the (six) grade at Downtown Doral Upper School. With the help of their science teacher, they invented a device (装置) (warn) city workers when and where there is a danger of flooding.

Bianca, one of the team (member), said, "All of us have experienced problems with flooding, and we knew we had to do (anything) about it." One teacher at the school said, "Floods are common in South Florida, and students at our school hope their device will help."

The students'device uses a laser system (激光系统). When (connect) to storm drains, the device could warn the city workers if a drain is plugged up. Then the city workers could clean the drain at once.

Chinese people have some traditional ways to reduce (减少) the summer heat without air-conditioners (空调).

Such ways include healthy food and tools that also help people experience the beauty of summer. Here are some choices which will bring you a surprisingly cool experience.

The first one is plum juice (酸梅汤). It is a traditional healthy drink in summer in Beijing. It can reduce summer heat in the human body. People can have the juice all year round, yet summer is the best time above all others.

The second is a bamboo mat (席子). It is a lovely must-have that can cool your summer with a naturally nice smell. There are many sizes for beds, chairs and so on. It's really comfortable to lie on a bamboo mat and drink some plum juice while watching TV in summer.

The last one is Chinese fans. Available in many shapes and materials, Chinese fans are special for the water-ink paintings they carry. Fans made of silk were often used by women, especially young unmarried ladies in ancient China. They used fans to hide their mouths when they wanted to avoid showing shyness. If you want to lead a low-carbon (低碳) style of living, a fan is necessary in summer.

A number of important school activities are coming up, and the biggest one is the "Exercise Month".

The main aim of this activity is to improve our school members' knowledge about the importance of exercise.

 During this month, a lot of activities will be held to show the importance of exercise.

● Writing Competition. The length of the writing is 500 words for this competition.

● Talk. The talk will be given on December 18th. The speaker will be Dr. Chiu from St Stephen's Hospital.

● Exhibition. The winning and excellent writings from the competition will be on show.

● After-school Exercise Classes.  In these classes, experienced coaches from the local exercise clubs will also help our school members to make practical exercise plans.
