This painting is called The Fighting Temeraire. Temeraire is the name of the big, old sailing ship that you can see on the left of the picture. People chose this picture to be the greatest painting in Britain. 

J. M. W. Turner painted it in 1839. It shows the old sailing ship, the Temeraire, on the River Thames near London. There's a small tugboat pulling the old ship. It's in fact taking the Temeraire on its last journey. The old ship is going to the breaker's yard. In the background we can see the sun setting. 

The picture, however, is more than just a painting of two boats in the evening. The artist wanted to show the end of an era(时代). The time of the beautiful，old sailing ships is coming to an end. That's why we see this happening at sunset. In the little, brown tugboat we can see the new industrial era starting. The tugboat is small and dark and it's making a lot of smoke, but it's very strong, because it's pulling the much bigger ship. 

The painting shows a real event. Turner watched the Temeraire taking its last journey up the Thames, but he changed some of the details. He painted the old ship white and gold so that it looks like a ghost. In fact, the real ship was black and yellow. We also see the sun setting behind the ship, but in fact, the ship travelled towards the sunset. However, Turner wanted to show the sun setting on the time of the beautiful old sailing ships. 

Turner painted The Fighting Temeraire when he was quite old, so perhaps he wanted to show the sun setting on his own life, too. He loved the painting and he never sold it. 

You can see it today in the National Gallery in London. 

A photo a day keeps the doctors away

Taking a photograph each day and posting it online is a popular hobby. To study how this habit influences health, British researchers interviewed the creators of online photo magazines and discovered that daily photography improved their lives in several ways: it made them mindful of the present, it pushed them to go for walks to get their photos, and it gave them chances to communicate with people who share their interests. 

The 16:8 diet works

In a small study, researchers at the University of Illinois asked 23 fat participants(参与者) to spend 12 weeks following a type of diet called the 16:8 diet. In the eight hours between 10 a. m. and 6 p. m. , they could eat as much as they wanted of any food. However, for the remaining 16 hours of the day, they were allowed to have only water and other calorie-free drinks. Compared with control group, the 16:8 dieters took in about 300 fewer calories a day, lost 3 percent of their weight, and saw a great drop in their blood pressure. 

10 minutes of exercise can improve memory

Can't find your keys? Go for a quick walk or do a few yoga(瑜伽) poses. In a recent study, 36 healthy young adults who had just exercised for ten minutes showed improved connectivity(连通性) between the parts of the brain for new memories and the parts for detailed memory processing. The participants also improved their performance on a memory test. The researchers now plan studies in older adults to find out whether regular light exercise improves their memory as well.

Last summer, my family and I visited my grandparents' hometown in the countryside. It was a place full of sweet （memory）, but an unexpected meeting made the trip special.

Last month,16-year-old Alkut Dilxat made history. He（变成）the youngest Chinese climber to reach the top of Qomolangma.

The teenager from Xinjiang arrived at the South Base Camp in Nepal on April 15,2024. After a 28-day

adjustment period, he started climbing with about（六）experienced adult climbers. On（五月）19, Alkut stepped onto the long summit ridge, breathing heavily. At last, he stood on the highest point of the world!

"I was so excited at the top!" Alkut said. "Climbing Qomolangma has always been my dream. I worked （努力）to make it come true."

Alkut started climbing when he was young. He learned skating at 7, skiing at 8, and（岩石）climbing at 9. At 10, he climbed his first mountain with his father. Now, he（带领）an outdoor rescue team in Xinjiang.

To prepare for this climb, Alkut ran 12 kilometers every morning before school. He took professional training on（周末）.

"My father was worried, but he supported me（作为）a coach and friend," Alkut said. His father felt （自豪）when he got a call from the top. "He's better at（应对）with risks now, and understands nature more deeply," his father said.

This young climber's story shows that with efforts and courage, anyone can reach their goals.

A monkey sat in a tree by the river. He saw a fisherman throw a net into the river to catch fish. The fisherman soon took out a full net and went home.

How to Develop a Better Relationship With Your Parents

Be respectful

Even if you do not agree with their parenting style or values, be polite to your parents. There are a number of ways to show your respect. When they are talking, let them finish speaking before you take your turn.

Be positive

①In early 2024, China opened its first smart park, Starlight Park, in the busy city of Shenzhen. Covering50,000 square meters, this park is not just a place with trees and flowers. It shows how technology can work together with nature to make life better and more eco-friendly.

When Michael first came to China from Germany as an exchange student, he was drawn by the beautiful strokes（笔画）of Chinese calligraphy（书法）in a museum. Though he knew nothing about the art, he decided to learn it, not realizing how challenging and meaningful it would be.

Michael's first calligraphy class was harder than he expected. Holding the brush correctly and writing basic characters like "永" needed a lot of patience. His teacher, Mr. Li, told him, "Calligraphy is not just writing—it's about balance, rhythm, and heart." Michael practiced for hours, often getting ink on his clothes, but he slowly improved.

As he learned more, Michael realized calligraphy was deeply connected to Chinese history and culture. Each stroke carried meaning, and famous calligraphy works from Tang and Song dynasties told stories of famous writers and poets. He even started reading about ancient masters like Wang Xizhi, whose Lanting Xu is considered a master piece.

After a year of study, Michael began sharing his love online. He posted videos explaining how different types of Chinese writing developed. His foreign friends were amazed—some even asked him to teach them! Last winter, he organized a workshop at his university in Berlin, where over 50 students tried writing "福" for Chinese New Year.

Now, Michael continues practicing calligraphy every week. "It's more than an art form—it's a way to understand China's spirit." he says. His dream is to open a cultural center one day, bridging East and West through brush and ink. This way, more people can know about the beauty of Chinese calligraphy.

Red Nose Day is an event which takes place every year to raise money for the charity Comic Relief. On 21 March, it collected more than £34 million for good purposes. Comic Relief helps the poor people in the UK and around the world.

On Red Nose Day, BBC One showed a three-hour amusement show, Funny for Money 2025. People saw lots of money-raising challenges taken on by famous people and the public to raise money to provide food, healthcare and housing for people in need.

In one of the challenges, BBC Radio 1 host, Jamie Laing, ran five marathons in five days, one every day.

Although he said he thought about giving up, Laing completed the challenge and ran a total distance of 150 miles. After finishing, Laing thanked everyone who donated and supported him, adding, "That was a wild ride. I've never cried more in my life." He arrived in Salford, England, on Red Nose Day and walked slowly onto the stage during Funny for Money. The hosts, Joel Dommett and Alison Hammond, told Laing he had raised more than £2 million.

TV hosts Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton also took on the Wheely Big Challenge, in which they roller skated non-stop for 24 hours. Lots of famous people sent video messages of support which were aired on the show, and others took part in singalongs and funny short shows. Films about projects that Comic Relief raises money for were shown too. The actor David Tennant spoke about the situation of people not having enough food in the UK.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon (峡谷) Bridge running 625 meters above the Beipan River, in Guizhou Province, is set to become the world's highest bridge.

Guizhou is home to more than(一半) of the world's top 100 highest bridges and has set the (记录) for the world's highest bridge more than once. The first was in 2oo3 when the Beipanjiang

Guanxing Bridge became the highest hanging bridge in the world.The(二) time was in 2016, the Beipanjiang Duge Bridge, and this year, it's doing it again with a bridge over the deepest part of the Beipan River Valley. Standing at a (高度) of 780 meters, the bridge will be built in an area known as the"Earth Crack(裂缝)".

Although to be the highest bridge is pretty nice, China built the bridge with another (目的) in mind. Now crossing the huge canyon takes people (几乎) one hour to drive on the only winding road, but after the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge(连接) the two mountains, the crossing time will be lowered to about a minute.

The local government also wants to turn the bridge into an interesting place for (游客). There will be some bars and cafes at both ends. Also, one of the bridgewill offer a glass elevator(电梯) that people can enjoy views of the (附近)areas. The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is set to become the world's highest bridge on June 30th, 2025.
