The Grasshopper and the Ant

One summer day, in a small town in Mexico, a lazy grasshopper was  (sit) comfortably in the sun playing the guitar. twalked by carrying a big plate of tacos. The ant was hot and tired  she worked for a long time without resting.

 "Come sing with me," said the grasshopper (happy). "Life is too short to work all the time!"

"I can't," said the ant. "I have to cook the most delicious tacos now and save them  the winter when it will be too cold to cook outside."

When the  (cold) winter finally arrived, the ant had lots of food. But the grasshopper was hungry. He had nothing （eat）. Luckily, the ant was kind and (give) him something.

Together they ate the tacos the ant prepared over those hot summer (day). The grasshopper learned that is important to plan earlier.

On a cold winter day last year, I returned home after work. As I drove up, I saw grey smoke1 from the roof of my house. It was on fire. The firefighters came to2 it, but in the end, I still lost everything. All I had were the clothes I was wearing and my3 .

Many people use smartphones. More and more homes have smart TVs.

Smart glasses have small computers in them. They tell people about what is around them. Soon, blind people will be able to buy special smart glasses to help them see.

Engineers have made smart glasses for partly blind people.

 Objects appear brighter and bigger so that partly blind people can see better.

In some smart glasses, a computer voice tells the person what is in front of them.  They say what color clothing people are wearing. They can also give directions(方向). 

Engineers are working on smart glasses for fully blind people.

What do you think of smart glasses? Why?

① Body language is important in communication. However, the same body language can have very different meanings in different cultures. Here are some examples.

② Nodding your head usually means "yes". But in Bulgaria(保 加 利 亚 ) and Greece, nodding up and down means "no".

③ In the West, people like to look at each other when they talk. Strong eye contact(交流) is very common in Spain, Greece and Arab countries. Finns(芬兰人)and Japanese are embarrassed when others keep staring at them during a talk. They only make eye contact at the start of a discussion.

④ Tapping your nose means "secret" in England. In Italy, the same gesture means "be careful".

⑤In many cultures, like Italy and the U.S., People use their arms freely when talking. They often wave their arms around. Northern Europeans don't like gesturing with their arms. They think it shows insincerity(不真诚) and is too dramatic. In Japan, gesturing with broad arm movements is thought to be impolite.

⑥ Sitting cross-legged is common in North America and some Europeancountries. In many countries in Asia and the Middle East, sitting like this is not respectful.

Michael was a professional football player, but in 2017 he had an accident in a swimming pool. After that, he couldn't move his body from the shoulders(肩 膀 ) down.

Doctors told him that he'd probably never walk again, but Michael didn't want to believe this. He had recently got engaged (订婚) to the woman who is now his wife and he said that she was the main reason he wanted to get better. He spent six days staring at his toes and trying to make them move and, finally, he succeeded! This was the start of a long journey.

While in hospital, Michael met John, a man in his late thirties. Doctors had also told John he would never walk again, but Michael encouraged him not to give up and six months later, John told Michael he was walking with a stick.

Only a year after his accident, Michael climbed the highest mountain in Wales. Since then he has also climbed a 6,500-meter mountain in Nepal and he said that after each big climb he noticed his body could do new movements.

Two years later, 31-year-old Michael climbed 8,848 meters, the height of the world's highest mountain, by going up and down his parents' stairs 2,783 times.
When he finished, he told a news reporter he had loved it although it sometimes was "painful" and "boring". He also raised ￡46,000 for charity (慈善).

Michael hopes his story can help people. That's why he started his own charity, M2M, which aims to support "people facing challenges in life".

People usually think volunteering is just for adults. It seems hard for students like us. But it is completely different in Canada. The government encourages(鼓励) people of any age to volunteer and make contributions(贡献) to the whole society. So, if students want to graduate(毕 业 ) from high school, 30 hours of volunteering is needed. If students want to get into a good university, it helps if they contribute a lot to society. Volunteering is an important point that universities will think about.

Besides, there are volunteer chances everywhere. People can find information about how to volunteer posted in the library or on the Internet. It includes many different jobs, such as wrapping(包装) gifts in a shopping mall, taking care of small kids or cleaning up a church. Students can choose what they want to do and registeronline.

I got my first volunteer job at New Westminster Museum every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. My job is to check the documents(文件) on a computer and correct mistakes. The museum is about the historically important family in New Westminster. At first, I was nervous to communicate with others. But as time passed, I became more open. During the volunteering, I not only learned how to work with other volunteers but also learned a lot of history about New Westminster.

As a volunteer, I am proud of myself. I enjoy doing my job and helping others.
