Tea and coffee are two of the most popular drinks in the world. However, people usually like one more than the other. 

Tea drinking started in China and India over 4,000 years ago, around 2700 BC. Tea is made from a leaf. These days, some people drink tea for health, using it to help with sleep, stress, or losing weight.  In fact, tea drinking in countries such as Japan is a part of the culture.In Turkey, tea always appears when people meet. Whether in someone' s home or a business, tea is always offered as a way of welcoming. This is a time when tea and other dishes are served in the afternoon, it is a way of relaxing with friends or co-workers.

Coffee came much later than tea, at just over 1,000 years ago. Coffee is made from beans.Something in the coffee beans makes a person feel more energy. Most people drink coffee in the morning to help them wake up. Others will also drink coffee during short breaks in the afternoon to keep going through the work day. However, many people at the coffee shop drink coffee while working on their computers.

The sound from Miranda's alarm, clock（闹钟）would not stop. Miranda reached over and stopped the noise ringing in her room. The action brought her, a few minutes of peace and quietness.

On a usual day, Miranda jumped out of bed even before the alarm clock could ring. She did not. mind getting up early. She loved morning because she could, complete her two-mile run before most of her family members got up. She ran every morning so that she would realize her dream of being the best runner in the school. However, this morning was different. She would go and find out whether the pain in her leg was something that could be easily treated or would stop her from doing something she loved most: running with the school track team.

As the alarm clock rang out again, ▲ . She cut off the annoying（讨厌的）noise and rose from her bed. She could hear the sound from the kitchen where her mother was making her favourite breakfast of pancakes and bacon. Her mother always made her favourites whenever Miranda was facing a problem or in a bad situation, but she' d never faced anything like this before.

Sighing（叹气）deeply in the quiet room, she tried to stand up. She could feel the pain in her right leg. It was serious but not unbearable. Surely, Miranda thought, it would not be as bad as she had imagined.

She shook her head to clear her thought and got ready to join her mother. As she walked into the kitchen, her mother gave her a big smile. Immediately, Miranda felt comforted. If nothing else,she at least knew one thing was certain. She was not alone in this and that would make all the differences, no matter what the day would bring.

①In your magazine, you wrote that many farm kids wanted to live in the city. Well, I am a farm kid, and I don't want to live in the city. In fact, I want to explain exactly why I think it's better to grow up on a farm than to grow up in the city.

②First, farm kids are too busy with farm work to get into trouble like a lot of city kids do.We usually go home right after school to work on the farm and help our parents. We have to milk the cows, feed animals, fix fences, help with watering the crops（庄稼）or any other kind of farm work. All these things keep us busy and out of trouble.

③Second, farm kids understand at an early age what's really important in life. We help our parents when animals are born, and we take care of these animals till they die. Most farm kids like me learn a lot about life and death on the farm. That gives us an understanding of human life and death that city kids don't have.

④In addition, farm kids have a much better understanding of nature than many city kids do.We work outside all year. We always get to watch the sunrise. We understand how heat or wind or snow can change our crops. We also understand how much water different crops need at different times of year. The farm kids learn many outdoor skills when they are young.

⑤Finally, farm kids have a greater sense of responsibility than most city kids. We know that crops and animals can die if we don't do our work. I learned at an early age to feed the animals on time and to water the crops regularly. Sometimes I'm tired or sick, or it's freezing cold. Even then.I know that I have to do these things because the animals, the crops, and my family depend on me.

⑥For all these reasons, I think that it is better to grow up on a farm than to grow up in the city. My own experience growing up on a family farm in Colorado tells me this. I know that growing up on a farm made me the responsible, hardworking, and thoughtful young person.

For as long as we can remember, one of the most popular ways parents use to punish their children has been the"time out".

It seems that it is a good idea: the child sits on his own to reflect（反思）on what he has done. Then, when the time is up, he will apologize and learn from the mistake.

However, just because it's something that's been done for years, that doesn't mean it is the right thing to do. In fact, very often, children don't sit nicely and think about what they' ve done.Instead, they need to be told a few (or many) times to go back to their places and stay quiet.They' re not reflecting on why they are in the"time out" at all. More likely than not, they' re probably just really angry, and'so' are the parents. In the end, both the parents and the children make each other unhappy, or even angry.

What can parents do to change this situation? You may have already heard of things like peaceful parenting（育儿）and gentle parenting. These focus on the relationship between parent and child through building trust and love. So, instead of starting a"time out", try something called"time in". A"time in" needs both parent and child to stay close until both get calm. After that, the parent, and child can discuss what happened and solve the problem together. If the child can make changes, everyone can then move on.

As we all know, punishment and violence（暴力）seldom work and will never teach the children what the right way to act is. A"time in" can be the great time for the children to learn through mistakes, Kids learn how to build their emotional and social skills through difficult situations. So, instead of punishing them for acting their age, we can use chances to teach and guide them to a place of learning.

A"time in" may take more time, but it does work.

Many people believe that the environment is being destroyed, and they think this is a new problem. They believe we are hurting nature because there are too many people we use too many things. This is true for some problems like the Earth getting(hot) than it was in the past. But deforestation has been happening for centuries.

One chart（图表）shows how the land on Earth has changed over the past10,000 years. It shows that only 71% of the Earth' s land is good for living things. The rest is mostly ice, deserts,or other places are unsuitable（不合适的）for life.

' It also shows that 10,000 years ago,57% of the world' s livable land(cover) in forest. Today, only 40% is left. We have lost one-third of the world' s forests, an area twice as big the United States!

We lost only a small amount of forest in the first 5,000 years. At that time, there were very few people in the world. They needed a lot of land(grow) enough food, but there wasn' t much demand（需要）for forests.

The world lost half of(it) forests in the last 100years. This is same amount of forest that was lost from 8,000 BC to 1900.

(cut) down trees is not new, but it has worsened recently. While we need land for farming, new technology may help us grow more food on less land, which could help to save forests for everyone.

However, we need to take(act) now.
