The Journey of Self-Discovery

People make long journeys to different countries. However, the biggest journey is the self-discovery journey. How can you start the journey of self-discovery? Here are four tips for you.

Find out your most valuable ability. You may have different kinds of abilities. It could be about your ability to create, your ability to understand others or your skills at football. But which of them are you proud of? This will help you know yourself better.

Know what makes you excited. This will tell you where you can get your own joy. It could be when you are performing a dance on stage, when you help your dad fix his computer or even when you are doing research on your school science project.

Get out of your comfort zone (舒适区). It is always comfortable to stay in your familiar (熟悉的) area. However, in order to discover yourself, you need to put yourself in some uncomfortable situations. You can do some outdoor activities you are afraid of. This will give you a chance to learn more about how you feel, think and react when the challenge comes.

It is also a powerful way to discover things about yourself. When you are in a different place where people share different thoughts, you may have a chance to rethink about what you always believe.

People may want to finish the journey as soon as possible. As you go through life, many experiences can change you, and this helps you grow. The journey to self-discovery is life's greatest adventure.

There are three common ways to test food allergies. Probably the simplest way is to give a child a food test. The doctor watches the child eat a little certain food to see if the child has an allergic reaction. This method takes quite a long time so it is used less often than the other two methods—skin tests and blood tests. In a skin test, a doctor puts allergens under the child's skin and then waits to see if the child's skin reacts. In a blood test, doctors take some of the child's blood and add allergens to it and then check the blood.

Dr. Jennifer from Stanford University spent 10 years studying the methods. She found a surprising fact. Skin tests or blood tests given to patients who visited their doctor for treatment of skin problems or stomachaches showed that these patients were allergic to certain foods. However, later tests showed that although they tested positive (阳性), fewer than 50 percent of them actually had food allergies. The problem might be food intolerance (不耐受) instead of a food allergy.

Food allergies have something to do with a person's immune system, while food intolerance has something to do with a person's digestive system and the reaction is usually less serious. One of the most common kinds of food intolerance happens to people who have trouble taking in the sugar in food like milk, cheese and ice cream.

Though allergy tests may show false positive results, they are still useful and can save lives. Some children's food allergies may disappear as they grow older, so even though doctors don't cure food allergies, sometimes the body itself does.

Mary began to like her life here. Every morning, she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds. The cold wind brought pink to her face. And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.

"Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?" Mary asked once.

"It was Mrs. Craven's garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in."

"But what happened?" Mary asked,

"There was an old tree in the garden with a branch (树枝) like a seat, Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it."

Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must be.

The wind roared around the house, and the doors and windows banged. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.

"Can you hear someone crying?" she asked Martha.

Martha seemed pretty nervous. "No," she answered. "It's only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She's got a toothache. Perhaps she's crying. I'm going to check if she needs any help." After the words. Martha left the room quickly.

When Martha left her alone. Mary decided to explore the house. She went quietly along corridors and up and down stairs. In the silence of the house she heard again the sound of a child crying. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out, "What are you doing here?" she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away. "Get back to your room at once."

She went home and said to her mum, "My whole week was bad. And those bad things still stay in my mind. Why do I only remember something bad? There must be something wrong with me!"

Mum smiled and said, "My girl! Don't be angry with yourself. Everyone feels like that sometimes. Our mind remembers bad things because it wants to keep us safe. Bad feelings are not easy to leave. You need some practice to change your mind."

"What should I do?" Nora asked.

"Take a few deep breaths and try to think about something happy," Mum said.

"Well, I fell over," she said, "But I also get to play outside, climb trees, and help my dad bake bread! Life is not that bad!" Then she smiled because she found the secret of being happy.

Peking Opera, also called Jingju, listed by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, is the most important one among hundreds of forms of local operas in China. It arose in the late 18th century and has a history of more than two hundred years.

Peking Opera which combines singing, dancing, acrobatics and martial arts is sung and recited using Beijing dialect. The music of Peking Opera plays a key role in setting the pace of the show, creating a particular atmosphere, shaping the characters, and guiding the progress of the stories,

The art form has spread to many other countries and is enjoyed all around the world. Many children in China receive training in Peking Opera classes or practise Peking Opera. However, some artists still worry that Peking Opera is challenged by new forms of entertainment like many traditional art forms. They are trying to do something for Peking Opera.

Tao Qingmei, a traditional arts scholar at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, co-wrote the book The Marvelous Game with Guo Baochang. Guo, a film director, is a Peking Opera fan who has loved Jingju since he was a kid. It has been his long time wish to write a book on Peking Opera.

The boy on the new book cover is Guo Baochang's grandson. Guo and his grandson are playing a game by dressing up in roles from the classic Peking Opera piece, Shuang Bei Deng, which is a comedy. Tao and Guo spent years writing the book because they wanted to make it easy and fun for everyone. They hope young people will get to know more about Peking Opera and fall in love with it.

Peking Opera is regarded as an expression of the aesthetic ideal of opera in the traditional Chinese society and remains a widely recognized element of the country's cultural heritage. The stories performed in Peking Opera are often based on Chinese history, folklore and literary classics. They bring us a colourful world.

The world is changing very fast. Scientific technologies are now influencing a every field of life. A scientist once said that success in developing scientific technologies would be one of the biggest events in human history, but he thought some of them might also be the last unless we learn to avoid the risks. For m   society, scientific technologies are amazing but humans may face a lot of challenges.

Will humans be controlled by scientific technologies in the future? Some people say "Yes". They think humans will be under control completely. I computers are implanted (植入) inside brains, things will be much worse. With the d of technologies, robots have taken the place of humans in some fields and it may make some people l their jobs. What's more, data centres need a large amount of energy to run. At the same time, it produces so much h all the time that a great deal of water is used for cooling. All these may be the risks the scientist referred to.

However, other people don't a . They are hopeful about the relationship between scientific technologies and humans. They say that scientific technologies have done much for us and made our daily lives much easier. They can free people from doing housework, writing articles or e making films. For example, some technologies can change words into short videos easily and make it p for some common people to be directors.

Every coin has two sides. Rather than worrying about the risks of scientific technologies, we should learn to use them in a w way and manage them well.
