My sister Judy and I sat at our table. We watched the young waiters（服务员）running around as we waited  our lunch at a restaurant in our community.

"Hello, I'm Michael," our waiter (introduce) himself, his voice shaking a bit. When he poured our water, he spilled（使溅出）some. "I'm so sorry," he said. His face turned red. Judy and I both wanted the beef with potatoes. However, when Michael came back, he brought(we) two bowls of noodles. This mistake just made him look more nervous. Later, we ordered（点）a slice of cake, it never arrived.

Before we left, Judy told our waiter that we really enjoyed (eat) there. "We appreciate your hard work. You' re going to do great in the restaurant business in future!"she said. After hearing her kind words, the young man smiled brightly.

At first, I couldn't understand  Judy praised him when he had a lot to learn. Then I saw him walk over to his next table. This time, he looked (cheer) and confident. He welcomed the (customer) and poured their water without spilling a drop.

"See? We should encourage young people (believe) in themselves," Judy said with a knowing smile.

Emi Kim, aged 11, noticed that her school library didn't have many books with characters（角色） who looked like her.  The following is our interview with Emi.

How does your project encourage kindness?

We are sometimes afraid of what we don't know. That's probably a reason why some people are not kind to those who are different from them.  My hope is that kids will learn about our differences by reading these books.

Have your fundraisers（募捐活动）gone well?

Yes, they went well. We bought 15 books for five different schools. This collection includes books by and about Pacific Islanders, Asian Americans and African Americans.

At our second one, we raised over $3,000 and bought books about kids with disabilities（残疾）。This group has 21 books, and we donated them to 12 different schools!

I do research by reading library books or by watching videos online. In the first group, one of my favourites is Eyes that Kiss in the Corners. It's about an Asian girl who realizes her eyes are different from her friends' and appreciates that. In the second group, one of my favourites is A Kind of Spark. I will continue to choose books with a wider circle of characters so that everyone can feel included.

As a junior firefighter, Brett Saunders wants to stop house fires, The 13-year-old gives smoke alarms（烟雾报警器）to students at local schools. He says, "it makes me feel good knowing that I could save lives. " When Brett was seven, a terrible house fire happened in his town. "One of my best friends died in it, " Brett says, "His name was Michael. "

When planning his birthday party, Brett thought of Michael and the firefighters who put out the fire. Instead of asking for birthday presents, he decided to ask his friends to donate（捐赠）money to the fire department（消防局）。

With their support, Brett raised $250. The fire department got the donation and suggested using the money to buy smoke alarms for students at Brett's school. "I don't want a fire to happen to anyone else. So why don't we give out smoke alarms so we can help stop that? Brett explains.

During Fire Prevention Week, Brett helped firefighters hand out 620 smoke alarms at his school. Since then, he has continued his project with the help of others. He gave smoke alarms to new students at his school and students at two other schools.

Every time he hands out a smoke alarm, Brett remembers Michael. "I think about all the people I have helped because of him, he says.

Brett has distributed（分发）nearly 1,500 smoke alarms so far. " If you have the chance to do something nice, do it, because you never know-it could save a life,"" he says. "And it just builds a better world.'

Rita was tired from basketball practice, and she had to study for the next day's Maths test. But she had to take care of her little sister Molly. And it was a headache for her!

Molly didn't want to wash her face or her hands before going to bed, but Mum had said that doing so was a rule. What could Rita do? Surely she shouldn't just let the child go to bed dirty.Maybe she could force（强迫）her, because she was much stronger than Molly. "But this is the last thing I'd like to do. There must be a better way to do my job," thought Rita. Then she got an idea.

Rita went into the kitchen to get what she needed. Then she ran after Molly around the living room and caught her. Rita carried her sister into the bathroom. Molly looked at the sink（洗脸盆）full of water and started shouting.

"Do you want to learn magic?" Rita asked. She put blue and red food colouring into the water."If you put your hands in the sink, you can turn the water purple."

Molly opened her mouth to shout, then closed it and looked at the swirls（漩涡）of colour.Finally, she put her hands into the swirls of colour and the water turned purple.

"Can I wash my face now, too?" asked Molly.

"Sure," said Rita.

Ten minutes later, a tired but clean little girl was asleep in her bedroom and a tired babysitter（保姆）was opening her Maths book.

Kids run in the mud. They climb over walls. They carry heavy things. About twelve thousand kids from 4 to 14 years old took part in the Spartan Kids Race（斯巴达勇士儿童赛）in the World Park in Beijing on October 3.

The Spartan Race is named after the Spartans from ancient Greece（古希腊）. The Spartans were great soldiers（战士）. They were very strong and good at fighting.

The first Spartan Kids Race in Beijing was held in 2017. Both kids and their parents loved it."Doing this can help them become braver and get better at working out problems," said the organizer of the race.

"One task was to cross the mud pool. I couldn't find a way at first," said Wu Taiji, a 10-year-old boy from Beijing. "But when I saw another kid cross it by diving, I found my own way to do it."

Mr Su, father of a 5-year-old girl, said his daughter enjoyed the race. "Usually, she doesn't like getting dirty. But she didn't care about it this time."

Imagine this: You are walking in the desert and your feet are in the deep sand. When you try to walk, you find your feet are so heavy that you even can't move them. It is very (danger) to cross the desert on your own. So how do people move around in the desert? They move around sitting on the ship of the desert——the camel（骆驼）. The camel is (friend) and helpful. We'd better treat it  kindness and respect because it helps us a lot. The camel can move differently on the sand. When it (walk), it moves both feet on one side of (it) body and the other two on the other. It seems it is moving like  boat.So it gets the name.

The camel has special feet which help it walk freely on the sand. Even though it (usual) looks thin, it is strong enough to transport（运输）as much as of its weight. What's more, it can walk for miles without any food  water. When the sandstorm comes, the camel will close its nose. And its long eyelashes can protect its two (eye) from the sand as well as the sun.

You see, nature is so amazing. It gives the camel so many things (help) it live in the desert.

PE  more and more important. There is a new rule that students need to run 1,500 meters every day.

Liu Lei is from Dalian. He is 13 years old. He thinks the new rule is a good idea. Many students are worried about the new rule because they  run in daily life. Some students think that they may not feel refreshed（神清气爽的）or  after running. , Liu Lei thinks running can help them a strong body.
