Although the thought of learning a skill might seem a bit difficult at first, mastering something new can be interesting. 

Why learn something new?

It's great to learn something new. "The mental（心理的）health advantages of learning a new skill for children are huge," says scientist Dr Sultana Choudhry. "  " If you learn a new skill at a club or class with other people, it's also a great way to make new friends. Trying out a new sport could help you stay fit and healthy, too.

There are lots of things you can try, including learning a musical instrument, playing a sport or learning arts or crafts. A new skill doesn't have to be a hobby, though, it can also be something called a life skill. This is a skill that you will probably use throughout your life, when you' re a grown-up. It can be something like learning to cook, laying the table, emptying the dishwasher,polishing your shoes or putting away clean clothes.

How do I start?

Think about what you enjoy doing or what you'd like to try. You can look for local groups and classes or see if your school is doing any new after-school activities. You don't always have to go out to learn a new skill, though.  Why not get a book from the library about your chosen skill or even look online with an adult, for tips on how to master something new?

The ocean is full of amazing animals. It's also full of plastic. That's bad news for sea animals like deep-diving whales. They can mistake the plastic for food and eat it.

How do whales mix up plastic and food? A team at the Duke University, which has been looking into this question for some years, has recently published their research. It all comes down to echolocation（回声定位）:a natural process that allows whales to"hear" objects in the darkest depths of the sea. Some types of whales hunt（猎食）in the deepest parts of the ocean. There's little light at those depths, so it's too dark for the whales to see. But they can hear by echolocation.

The whales make a sound and then they listen. They hear echoes from nearby objects. These echoes allow the whales to hunt. The scientists found that rubbish and sea animals cause similar echoes. To the whales, they"sound" the same. That can trick the whales into eating rubbish.

The scientists gathered objectives such as bottles, bags, and rope. All of these have been found in the stomachs of whales. The team made sounds and recorded the strength（强度）of each echo off these objects. They then compared these echoes to those produced off the bodies of sea animals.The echoes from the plastic things were similar in strength to those returned by sea animals.

Eating rubbish is dangerous for whales. The plastic can build up in their stomachs, preventing food from passing through their bodies. This can be deadly. Merrill, the lead writer on the study,says, "The plastic impacts animals that are so far away from our daily life. This is really a big problem."

Everyone can play a part in cutting down plastic pollution. "People need to make real changes in their daily life, and then support the kinds of solutions that are required to deal with this problem," Merrill says.

Several schools are trying to stop students using slang（俚语；非标准英语）. But is it worth?

The Harris Academy in Upper Norwood (London) is one school that's taking action. Students there aren't allowed to use words such as coz (because), ain't (isn't/ aren't, etc.) and yeah (yes)when they' re speaking. A letter has been sent to parents explaining the decision, according to an article in the Daily Mail.

But why?"The big problem is that many of these words are appearing in written work,"explained Mr. Hank, an English teacher. "This puts many children at a disadvantage... We do want them to be able to communicate properly with people and be understood. We are going to teach them the rules. If they decide not to use these rules with friends, that is fine. But I want them to know that when they are filling in written forms and speaking in a formal situation they should use Standard English."

So, what's causing the problem? Firstly, slang is just about everywhere these days: in TV soaps, reality shows, songs, films .... Secondly, with more and more people using it in conversations with friends and workmates, it's becoming more acceptable. The increase in the use of mobile phones and social networking sites is also having an influence. While texting, people often use abbreviations or phonetic forms of words, such as wot(what), dat(that), dis (this), n(and),w(with), gonna(going to) and wanna (want to).

However, many see any efforts to control language as completely pointless. "The very nature of English is its flexibility（灵活性）,"said a Jamaican poet in a recent interview. "You can't control the type of language that people use," he added. "The reason why English is such a popular language is because it develops well to fit the way it is being used," a language expert explained.

Is the"war" on slang worth fighting?

Lena Ford was 7 when she started Arting for You. For this project,Lena collected art materials and gave them away to homeless kids in and around her hometown of Marietta, Georgia. "My grandma always wanted to give back to others," Lena, now 15, told the reporter. "I was guided by that."

Two years later, she started a small business called Positively Lena. It sells products with inspiring messages, including a book Lena wrote to help kids deal with hard times. "My goal is to spread positivity（积极乐观）,"says Lena. She also offers workshops on creative writing and scrapbooking. Part of the money she makes goes toward her charitable（慈善的）efforts.

Lena has another project: Kinship Family Initiative. She and her mom set it up in 

2022. The group helps kids who are being raised by a family friend or a relative other than a parent. This cause is close to Lena's heart. "My mom and her brothers were raised in a relative's family," she says. One way Lena helps is by providing"positivity bags" packed with school things and her books.

"Honestly, it makes me feel really happy," Lena says. "And that's why I keep doing what I'm doing: knowing that I'm making a difference and knowing that I'm making people happy."

Kindness is powerful. Lena knows this. You probably do too. "Kindness means just making someone happy," Lena says. "It can even be something as small as giving praise to someone:'Hey,your shirt looks nice.' Something just like that can make someone smile. It doesn't have to be something great. You can always just do something small, and it can make someone's day."

Lena hopes more people show kindness to others. "If we want to grow up with kind people surrounding us, then we need to be kind to others," she says. "You never know how you can influence someone else."

Giving can make you feel great.  Plus, the more you give, the more you find a reason for living, a sense of what life means, and joy. Follow these tips. 

Find your interest. It' s not how much you give.  You might care about one cause more than others, and that' s okay. Support the cause that feels right for you. 

Give your time.  Not everyone has the same amount of money, but we all have time. We can use some of our time to help others, even if it' s just a few hours or days. 

 Michael Norton, a professor at Harvard Business School in Massachusetts, says, "It brings more happiness to give money (or services) to someone who has a clear reason for how they will use it. "

Nasugraq Rainey Hopson is a writer and illustrator（插图画家）. She has written short stories and created art inspired by her Iñupiaq culture. Hopson' s first novel（小说）, Eagle Drums, tells a story from the old tales of the Iñupiaq people. It' s about a big and special celebration. 

In the book, the hero Piŋa suffers from the grief of losing his brothers, who travelled to a nearby mountain and never returned. Piŋa then goes to the mountain, where he meets the eagle god（鹰神）, Savik. Savik gives Piŋa two choices: either to follow him or to face the same bad luck as his brothers. Piŋa' s choice leads himself on an adventure where he learns about the dances and songs of the Iñupiaq people. 

Eagle Drums talks about parts of Iñupiaq people' s life, like how they hunt and what kind of food they like to eat. Hopson wants to write more stories about Iñupiaq. "We have a lot of oral（口头的）history and oral stories in our culture, " she says. Hopson tells us that Iñupiaq people use their voices, facial expressions, and movements to show how they feel as they tell a story. "When you write a story, you can't do those things, " she adds. "It' s kind of hard to write something that is meant to be performed. " But she's up for the challenge. 

Eagle Drums is for anyone who wants to read an exciting story about adventures. Hopson says that when Iñupiaq kids read her book, they"get excited about seeing something from their own culture". Other kids who read her book tell Hopson that"they' re excited to learn about a story they' ve never experienced before". "You know, the best part is when I get to hear what people think about my work, " she says.

At the ninth China Collegiate Computing Contest Mobile Application Innovation Contest held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang in November 2024, a sign language learning app named ArtfulSign (Miaoshou in Chinese) became the top winner. 

Developed by hearing-impaired（有听力障碍的）students from Beijing Union University, the app was made to help normal people learn sign language to communicate with those who have hearing loss. 

The coolest thing about ArtfulSign is that it uses AI to help teach sign language. Each sign language word is shown through real-life video examples. Once you' ve learned a bit, you can turn on your camera, and the app will watch and check if you' re making the signs right. The app can check the videos quickly and then give you feedback（反馈）right away, making it fun and helpful to learn. 

Wang, a 21-year-old senior from East China' s Shandong Province, majors in computer science and technology. Wang, who communicates with people using a hearing aid, said he was very excited and proud of how well his app is working. According to him, ArtfulSign makes learning fun by using questions and games like unlocking maps. This way, everyone can learn at their own pace and level. 

Because of hearing disability, Yao, another teammate, really wants to make sure that people with disabilities can get information easily. She and the other two team members have spent six months developing ArtfulSign. They are still trying to make it better by improving how it looks and making sure the smart part works right. 

However, there are very few researchers in China who study sign language as a natural language. Most people who work with special education just see it as a helpful tool. "Sign language is a truly beautiful language. We hope more people will learn about it and enjoy it, " Yao said.

I turned on the heater and started the car to go back home. The roads were white, and the snow was coming down fast. I slowly drove out of the parking area, carefully watching the disappearing tire tracks（轮胎痕迹）in front of me. I could feel tightness in my neck and shoulders. "Almost home, " I thought. 

I tried to make a left turn, but my car slid（滑）to the right. What was worse, my car slid farther into a snowbank. Clearly, I needed help. My hands shook, and tears started forming in my eyes.

Tim stepped out of the snow-removal vehicle, and with a smile, he gestured for me to get out of my car. I thought for a moment, but the sincerity（真诚）in his eyes made me believe him. I handed him the key, and he climbed into my car with confidence. 

He seemed good with snow, guiding my car out of the snowbank carefully. "If you' d like, my friend can clear the road to your home. I can help you drive your car behind, " Tim suggested. 

This time, I agreed at once. I got home safely, and that night, I couldn' t stop thinking of Tim and his friend. Their simple act of kindness reminded me that even on the coldest of days, there is always warmth to be found. 

When Lena Ford was 7 years old, she began a project called"Art for You". For this project, Lena collected artistic works and gave them to 1 children in her hometown to help them. Lena, now 15, said, "My granny always 2 to help others. I was encouraged by that. "

Eyes are important to you, and good eyes help you see the world clearly.  You must want to know how to take good care of your eyes. Here are some questions for you to think over.

 When you stare at computers or phones for a long time, your eyes often feel tired. So, try to spend less time on screens and enjoy more time with your friends and family.

Do you give your eyes lots of rest? When you are watching TV or playing online games, remember to take breaks. After 20 minutes of work on the screen, look at something 20 feet（英尺）away for at least 20 seconds. It's really useful. When you have enough sleep, your eyes can get ready for the work of the new day.
