1、 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
When you make a mistake or say something wrong, it's easy to be hard on yourself. With selfcompassion, you can be a friend to yourself instead.
Self-compassion means giving yourself care and kindness. There are times when being kind to yourself can help—when you mess up or when you' re struggling(努力挣扎)to do something new. Dr Kristin Neff. author of several books on the subject, mentions three secrets to selfcompassion: being kind to yourself, understanding that everyone struggles sometimes and noticing your feelings.
Self-compassion can reduce stress and ease pain. When you' re kind to yourself, you can relax and be able to think more clearly and see a way forward. Suzy Reading, an expert in thoughts and feelings, says self-compassion helps you be your own friend and feel at peace. "Self-compassion enables you to forgive(原谅)yourself when you do something wrong, helping you learn and grow. " Just as you would be kind to a friend who made a mistake, self-compassion helps you to be a friend to yourself.
Here are some ways to practice self-compassion.
●Remind yourself that everyone messes up or struggles sometimes.
● Notice how you' re speaking to yourself. Suzy suggests talking to yourself using kind words. "Try calling yourself a pet name and see how that helps you choose softer words, " she says. "This is important when you are having a hard time. Kind words help us find solutions and lower stress. "
●Try recognizing the feelings you' re experiencing. When you feel upset, you might feel angry, disappointed, sad or anxious. Name the feeling and tell yourself it's OK to feel this way.
●Think about how to take care of yourself physically. Give yourself a hug, go for a walk, take a few slow and deep breaths or draw a picture.

The little boy looked up at his grandfather. "Today at school, Shane McGuire called me a potato head!"
The old man's eyes smiled down at the boy. "Is that all?" Grandpa laughed. "Well, if that young man knew anything about potatoes, he'd know that he just gave you a compliment. "
"What do you mean?" his grandson asked.
"The potato, my boy, is one of the most loved vegetables in the world. Where would we all be without the potato? It's delicious, widely-used, satisfying, and very good for you!"
Patrick laughed. "What else do you know about potatoes, Grandpa?"
"That's the spirit, my boy! Well, let me see. . . The potato was first grown in South America. It grew on the hillsides of the Andes Mountain range. Farmers there have been growing potatoes for over 7, 000 years! It wasn't until the 16th century that the Spanish brought the potato back to Europe with them. Still, it was another 200 years before potatoes were grown widely in Ireland. We soon learned that we could feed ten people with just an acre(英亩)of potatoes. We started growing them all over Ireland, and the population of our country grew rapidly. Sad to say, though, in the 1840s, a plant disease hit the potatoes, causing widespread hunger. Many people had to leave Ireland and moved overseas to North America. But we Irish took our love of potatoes with us, and it became popular there too. Now, Canadians and Americans love potatoes as well. "

11、 阅读下面短文,从每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
①In real life, babies can't drive cars, and your classmate's face may not appear in a movie. But with deepfakes, these things are possible. Deepfakes are pictures or videos made by AI. They are fake(伪造的),but they look just like real ones.
②"It's fun and creative to use deepfakes, " says Will Gardner, an expert on child online safety. "But they can be dangerous too. " Some deepfakes show people saying or doing things they never did. Others are used to spread lies, fake news, or trick people into giving away money or personal information.
③ ▲ One famous fake from history is a photo of the Loc h Ness Monster(怪物)in 1934. It actually showed a toy that moved underwater, with a scary sea monster's head on the front. More recently, photos and videos can be faked using computer programmes and apps. Now, the new AI tools make it easier to create fakes.
④Although deepfake technology is improving quickly, there are still signs to check whether a photo or a video is fake or not. For example, in a video, if the person's eyes never blink like real eyes do, or if their mouth movements don't match the words they are saying, we can know something is wrong.
⑤What's more, if you think a photo might be fake, try uploading(上传)it on the Internet to find out where it comes from. You might find the original photo which is unchanged. You can also read the comments(评论)below it to see what other people think.
⑥What should you do about deepfakes? If you see something that looks fake, talk to an adult you trust. They can give you good advice. Fake photos or videos may cause harm when people share them a lot. So if something seems mean or hurtful, the best choice is not to share it.

If you are a bike rider, you may remember your first long ride. On a bike, you could travel much faster and farther than you ever could on foot. What freedom! The first humans to ride horses probably felt the same way.
Ten thousand years ago, wild horses lived across the grasslands of Europe, Asia, and the Americas. At first, humans hunted them for meat. But around 6, 000 years ago, people in Central Asia discovered something important: horses could dig through snow to find grass during cold winters, and they could also eat tough plants that other animals couldn't. This meant horses were easy to raise. So people began to keep horses for food. For the first time, humans and horses lived together.
Later, people learned that horses lived in groups and they followed their lead horses. By copying their actions and acting like their leaders, humans slowly won their trust. Over time, horses grew calm around humans, allowing people to milk and ride them. But early rides were difficult—imagine trying to stay on a horse without a saddle(马鞍)! The animal would jump and throw riders off from time to time. To solve this problem, people invented tools, like saddles and reins, to control horses.
People then used horses for farming, trading, and exploring new lands, which made them more popular as working animals. Because of their speed and strength, horses also became powerful partners of soldiers in wars. More interestingly, horses even influenced fashion - people invented trousers to make riding more comfortable!
Today, horses have been important friends to humans on farms and in cities, even after trains replaced them as the fastest transportation in the 1800s. From food to friends, horses have walked with humans through time. They' re living pages of our shared story.

It was the day of the big1 game. I rode fast to school, imagining myself scoring a lot and winning the match. 2 ——BANG! My bike hit a rock, and the front wheel went flat. "No! I' ll 3 the game!" I shouted, kicking the useless bike.
When I finally arrived, all sweaty(出汗的)and 4 because it has already been on, the coach shook his head. "You' re out of the starting team, " he said. My spirits fell. Sitting on the bench, I watched my team lose 5 me. "This is the worst day ever, " I thought.
The next day, my leg hurt badly from the fall. Mom took me to the 6 . While waiting, I noticed an old man 7 in the hallway. His colorful drawings of birds attracted me. "Want to try?" he smiled, handing me a pencil. 8 , I drew a bird that looked almost real!"You' ve got gift, smart boy, " he said. Turns out, he was Mr. Wu, a(an) 9 teacher.
With my leg hurt, I couldn't play sports for a month. But instead of feeling 10 , I joined Mr. Wu's free art class after school. We painted sunsets, trees, 11 my broken bike! Slowly, I discovered a world beyond basketball.
Weeks later, our school held an art competition and I entered it. To 12 surprise——especially mine-I won first prize! 13 even the local newspaper interviewed me.
When I was presented the prize, I saw my basketball coach clapping loudly. Later, he said, "Maybe that 14 wheel wasn't so bad after all. "
The flat wheel reminds me that bad luck can open new doors. Like the ancient story says:"What seems like a loss might be a good thing in 15 . " Life's surprises aren't always bad—we just need eyes to see the hidden rainbows.

From red apples and yellow lemons to blueberries and green melons, fruit comes in many different colors.
According to Lu Wei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fruit colors actually come from their different pigments(色素). How the pigments come into being depends on where the fruit grows.
To find out how the environment influences fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black. And instead of just growing in one place, you can find them growing in many places around the world.
They found that red fruit is likely to grow in cooler places. The scientists also found that the closer the fruit is to the equator(赤道), the darker its color will be.
Animals have also had an influence on fruit colors. Animals eat fruit and drop the seeds(种子)in other places later. Therefore, in order to attract animals, some fruits develop colors that are easy for animals to see.
A. It is the environment that causes the fruit to turn a certain color.
B. This helps the fruit spread and grow in different places.
C. How does temperature influence fruit colors?
D. Blue and purple fruit mostly grow in warm places.
E. Why do different kinds of fruit have so many colors?
Do you prefer dark-colored fruit or light-colored fruit? Please give two examples.
