Floods, droughts, storms, hot days... extreme（极端的）weather is becoming more and more common all over the world. The emission of greenhouse gases （温室气体排放）from human activities has caused this, reported China Daily. 

Last summer, big storms hit areas of Europe. In Portugal and Spain, huge wildfires forced thousands of people to leave their homes. In the US, more than 80% of the west is in drought, causing 3/4 of the farmers in these areas to stop growing food. 

In June, very hot weather came to China's south. This heat lasted over 62 days in 2024. It broke the 2013 record and became the longest heatwave in 61 years. If you had visited Chongqing in summer, you might have seen a very "dark" city: there were no more neon lights（霓虹灯）in the streets but only a few lights on in shopping centers. The highest temperature there reached 45℃! People there had no choice but to turn on the air conditioner（空调）the whole day. 

Extreme weather also causes some serious diseases. You might know the word "thermoplegia（热射病）". It is the worst kind of sunstroke（中暑）. According to reports, it causes many cases of death. If people stay in high temperatures for too long, the heat will make people feel sick, and even cause them to die.

Lily Bice is an American girl. When she heard families in Texas lost everything because of Hurricane Harvey（飓风哈维）, she made decision.

Her parents experienced another hurricane 12 years ago, so they knew people in Texas had difficulty  (build) their new homes after Hurricane Harvey. They talked about how  (help) the people and Lily heard their talk. She wanted to play a part in helping those people. So she decided to give away some (toy) to a girl. " the girl has toys to play with, she will probably feel  (happy) than before," Lily thought. Then she started putting her toys in a bag. All of them provided Lily  a lot of fun. Lily wrote something on a piece of paper and put it into the bag. "Dear little girl, are you  (excite) about getting these toys? I hope they can be  (you) close friends. Have fun with them."

Lily's mom, Mellisa Bice, was proud of her daughter. She said Lily could feel what the people in Texas were experiencing although the little girl didn't experience a hurricane. "She  (understand) more than a child really does. She likes making things for people to make them happy," she added.

On August 23rd, 2017, the strongest typhoon named Hato（天鸽）hit Zhuhai seriously. Do you still remember how 1 it was?

The typhoon didn't die down（逐渐减小）until 8 o'clock. When I got downstairs, I was8 to see a number of fallen trees, and they made the neighborhood look like a forest! Only then did I 9 how terrible Hato was. Luckily, people came together to clean up and learned a 10 from it. The typhoon broke many things apart, but it also brought people closer together.

The weather report says there is a chance of thunderstorms, but you can only see a few white clouds overhead. So, you and your tennis partner head for the tennis court. Wait! Is that thunder you hear? Is that a lightning flash（闪光）? Go inside right away.

Although you are not sure of being struck（被击中）by lightning, some situations can put you at greater risk. If people work outdoors, lightning most often strikes them.  From 2006 to 2021, lightning caused an average of 28 deaths every year in the United States.

 You can protect yourself from the risk even though you are outside when lightning is close by. When the thunder roars, go inside. Find safe places. If there are no safe places nearby, you should stay off high areas and keep yourself as low as possible.

 In fact, about one-third of lightning strike injuries happen indoors（室内）. Make sure of avoiding touching water during a thunderstorm, and avoiding using electronic equipment（电子设备）.

Lightning strikes may be rare（少见的）. But they still happen, and the risk of serious injuries is high. Take thunderstorms seriously, and follow the above safety rules to keep yourself safe.

What happens in the jar?

Hot water makes warm, wet air called steam（水蒸气）. Steam rises up to the cold plate. The cold air near the plate changes warm steam into water. Then, heavy drops of water fall.

The sun heats the water. The warm, wet air rises up into the sky. When the warm, wet air meets the cold air, rain clouds will form. When the clouds have enough water, the drops fall to the ground as rain.

We have many kinds of technologies now. Some around us can help people in disasters.

The drone（无人机）is one of them. It can be used to send food, water and important things when a natural disaster happens. Very often the buildings are too dangerous for rescue（救援）teams to get in, but they can make the drone fly into the buildings first to search for those who are still alive.

Social media（社交媒体）is also a useful tool when it comes to natural disasters. With its help, people can know about the natural disasters earlier. And some social media platforms（平台）allow people to mark themselves as safe after disasters, so others can know their status（状况）. Social media is also a place for the latest news, so people can learn what is going on in the disaster areas. Besides, many social media platforms allow people to donate（捐赠）money to help people in disaster areas. The money will help them get back to their normal life as soon as possible. For example, live-streaming（直播）helped raise a lot of money for Henan after the flood in 2021.

Although these technologies can help when there is a natural disaster, we still need to prepare necessary tools and learn important skills to protect ourselves.

On January 7, 2025, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Dingri County in Xizang. The earthquake brought a lot of damage（损坏）and problems to the local area. However, China showed an amazing rescue speed.

Just 10 minutes after the earthquake, military planes took off quickly. They carried things for rescue and doctors to the disaster area. It showed how fast the country could act in an emergency. 30 minutes after the earthquake, the rescue teams got to the earthquake's central point. They began to search for people stuck（卡住）in the broken buildings right away. Even though the environment was bad, they didn't give up. Volunteers and local people also helped with the rescue work actively.

Six hours after the earthquake, the electricity（电力）in the disaster area came back to normal. People could use lights at home again. On the same day, the communication was almost back. That night, people in the disaster area had hot meals. The warm food not only made them full, but also made them feel better.

The rapid rescue work in the Dingri Earthquake shows China's strong ability to deal with natural disasters. It also shows that the country cares a lot about its people's lives.

It's time to say goodbye to you all. I feel a bit sad. No matter where you go, I'm sure that three years you have  here will be an unforgettable memory to you.
