①In real life, babies can't drive cars, and your classmate's face may not appear in a movie. But with deepfakes, these things are possible. Deepfakes are pictures or videos made by AI. They are fake(伪造的),but they look just like real ones.
②"It's fun and creative to use deepfakes, " says Will Gardner, an expert on child online safety. "But they can be dangerous too. " Some deepfakes show people saying or doing things they never did. Others are used to spread lies, fake news, or trick people into giving away money or personal information.
③ ▲ One famous fake from history is a photo of the Loc h Ness Monster(怪物)in 1934. It actually showed a toy that moved underwater, with a scary sea monster's head on the front. More recently, photos and videos can be faked using computer programmes and apps. Now, the new AI tools make it easier to create fakes.
④Although deepfake technology is improving quickly, there are still signs to check whether a photo or a video is fake or not. For example, in a video, if the person's eyes never blink like real eyes do, or if their mouth movements don't match the words they are saying, we can know something is wrong.
⑤What's more, if you think a photo might be fake, try uploading(上传)it on the Internet to find out where it comes from. You might find the original photo which is unchanged. You can also read the comments(评论)below it to see what other people think.
⑥What should you do about deepfakes? If you see something that looks fake, talk to an adult you trust. They can give you good advice. Fake photos or videos may cause harm when people share them a lot. So if something seems mean or hurtful, the best choice is not to share it.

If you are a bike rider, you may remember your first long ride. On a bike, you could travel much faster and farther than you ever could on foot. What freedom! The first humans to ride horses probably felt the same way.
Ten thousand years ago, wild horses lived across the grasslands of Europe, Asia, and the Americas. At first, humans hunted them for meat. But around 6, 000 years ago, people in Central Asia discovered something important: horses could dig through snow to find grass during cold winters, and they could also eat tough plants that other animals couldn't. This meant horses were easy to raise. So people began to keep horses for food. For the first time, humans and horses lived together.
Later, people learned that horses lived in groups and they followed their lead horses. By copying their actions and acting like their leaders, humans slowly won their trust. Over time, horses grew calm around humans, allowing people to milk and ride them. But early rides were difficult—imagine trying to stay on a horse without a saddle(马鞍)! The animal would jump and throw riders off from time to time. To solve this problem, people invented tools, like saddles and reins, to control horses.
People then used horses for farming, trading, and exploring new lands, which made them more popular as working animals. Because of their speed and strength, horses also became powerful partners of soldiers in wars. More interestingly, horses even influenced fashion - people invented trousers to make riding more comfortable!
Today, horses have been important friends to humans on farms and in cities, even after trains replaced them as the fastest transportation in the 1800s. From food to friends, horses have walked with humans through time. They' re living pages of our shared story.

The sun was setting on the Pacific, and I stood enjoying the warm light through my hotel window. Suddenly, loud cries broke the silence-five white-faced monkeys jumped in, took away my bananas and rushed into the forest! This was just one of many surprising moments in Costa Rica.
A few days earlier, I first got to a lively town in this small country. It sits at the foot of Arenal Volcano(火山). When I looked up, thick clouds completely covered the volcano-there was nothing to see! But the next morning, I woke up early-and there it was! I couldn't look away!
Then I hiked to see La Fortuna Waterfall. Going down 500 steps was tiring, but blue butterflies danced around me. The waterfall was so loud! I touched the water—it was freezing cold! Still, I jumped in like a brave penguin. That evening, I relaxed in the natural hot spring under the waterfall.
The next day, I visited Monteverde Cloud Forest with a guide. While crossing a bridge high above the trees, I couldn't believe my eyes: plants covered everywhere in Costa Rica-mountains, beaches and even towns! Nature is truly the boss here!"Our rainforest cover has doubled from 26% to over 52% in the past 30 years, " my guide told me. "We' ve set up many nature parks to protect the rainforest. " Just as I was wowed by the sea of green, a whisper came, "Be quiet-big cats live here. "
As we left the cloud forest, my guide smiled and said, "Everyone here lives with nature. " That's when I realized: Costa Rica's magic isn't just its beauty-it's how local people work together to keep it wild.

16、 任务型阅读
From red apples and yellow lemons to blueberries and green melons, fruit comes in many different colors.
According to Lu Wei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fruit colors actually come from their different pigments(色素). How the pigments come into being depends on where the fruit grows.
To find out how the environment influences fruit colors, Chinese scientists studied more than 280 different fruit colors, including white, red, blue, purple and black. And instead of just growing in one place, you can find them growing in many places around the world.
They found that red fruit is likely to grow in cooler places. The scientists also found that the closer the fruit is to the equator(赤道), the darker its color will be.
Animals have also had an influence on fruit colors. Animals eat fruit and drop the seeds(种子)in other places later. Therefore, in order to attract animals, some fruits develop colors that are easy for animals to see.
A. It is the environment that causes the fruit to turn a certain color.
B. This helps the fruit spread and grow in different places.
C. How does temperature influence fruit colors?
D. Blue and purple fruit mostly grow in warm places.
E. Why do different kinds of fruit have so many colors?
Do you prefer dark-colored fruit or light-colored fruit? Please give two examples.

One morning, I got up early and decided to make an apple pie for my mum. I called my grandma for help, followed a TV program to make jam and waited excitedly. I enjoyed every step so much that I didn't notice three hours pass by. Although the pie looked terrible and was not that delicious, mum ate it up and told me it was the best pie that she had ever had. For the first time, I realised that although I didn't make the pie successfully. I really enjoyed the process(过程)。
The process is important because it brings us something bigger than the result itself. That is, we always have new experiences in the process, which may help us improve our skills or form good relationships with others. If we just focus on the result and do not enjoy the process, we will be more likely to feel disappointed and want to give up. As a result, we will never understand the real meaning of success.
But in this busy world, we see a lot of successful people are in competition. How can we enjoy the process? Well, the question has the answer in itself.
Don't always compare yourself with others. First of all, we are all different. For some, success means being famous, while for others, it may be health or power. Ride your own ride.
Slow down. You need to stop expecting immediate results in what you do and learn to be patient. Impatience leads to unhappiness. Do it slowly, but never stop.
Reward(奖励)yourself. Divide the process into small steps, and give yourself a reward after completing each of them. For example, if you are in the process of losing weight, enjoy your favourite cake once in a while.
(1)、How does the writer start the passage?A、By giving an example. B、By comparing facts. C、By using old sayings. D、By listing numbers.(2)、What can we learn from the mother's reaction(反应)to the pie?A、She disliked the pie and told the truth. B、She actually found the pie delicious. C、She wanted to encourage the writer's effort. D、She wanted to show her cooking skills.(3)、According to the passage, who might enjoy the process better?A、Tom, who focuses only on final goals. B、Jack, who breaks tasks into steps and rewards himself often. C、Lucy, who always compares her clothes with others. D、Anna, who always gets angry if she doesn't see results.(4)、What's the best title of the passage?A、Never Give Up B、Achieve Good Results C、Enjoy the Process D、Success Means Happiness -

In 1640, an old man returned home, weak but peaceful after his final journey. Villagers asked, "You traveled all your life. Do you regret it?" His eyes still shone brightly as he answered, "I saw China's greatest wonders and walked where heroes like Zhang Qian once stood. How could I regret it?" This man was Xu Xiake, a traveler who left his footprints across China.
As a boy, while others studied books, Xu dreamed of mountains and rivers. At 22, he began a 30-year journey, facing dangers like robbers(强盗)and wild forests. But he never stopped, showing that strong will can overcome any difficulty.
Xu made important discoveries. Once, people argued about which Huangshan mountain top was taller——Tiandu or Lianhua. Xu climbed both through thick fog. Seeing farther-a longer distance(距离)from Lianhua's top, he proved(证明)it was higher, mixing bravery with careful thinking.
He wrote everything in Xu Xiake's Travel Notes, a book that lets us see China about 400 years ago. His words paint pictures of magical caves and foggy mountains, teaching us that travel isn't running away——it's learning to love the world more deeply.
Xu's story shows the true meaning of travel: it changes how we see life. Every step he took reminds us that traveling is like talking with nature, helping us grow wiser. Today, when we walk his paths, we remember his lesson - real discoveries happen not just by moving forward, but by daring to explore the unknown.
