I am a free dog called Johannes. I live in a large park by the sea. Freya is one of the three Bison (野牛) who live in an area with a fence (篱笆) within the park. Recently, I wanted to set them free and I almost succeeded.

Towards the end of the journey, Freya said to me, "We can't go on that ship."

"But it's right down there," I said. "We've already done the hard part. The goats (羊) have performed their duties, jumping and crying and making chaos (混乱) all around, so you wouldn't be found when you hid among them. Everything's ready." I was worried, for the sky was growing brighter, and it would be more difficult for the goats to hide the Bison from humans as they went down the hill.

"No," Freya said. "We're not going. We thought we could, but this short journey has already proven we are not ready for more. We can't make it."

"But why let me—let all of us—go through all this trouble?" I asked.

"You needn't be angry," Freya said. "Or sad. Or even surprised. Look at us. We're slow and old. We couldn't go across the sea in strange boats. Seeing this is enough."

She was still looking at the morning sea, which had grown brighter and whiter. She turned to me then. "Thank you, Johannes." She turned to the goats. "We are so thankful. We have lived quiet lives. But you have freed our eyes and our minds. What you did today mattered a great deal. You gave us the sea. And we will not forget it."

I tried to organize my thoughts. Was all this for nothing? And would we all have to go back to the park? I stood on the top of that small mountain, wondering what to do.

Then one of the goats said to me, "You could come with us. We will protect you, and when you reach the mainland, you can stay with us, or simply run free. There are a million free dogs like you. You can run with them and see places and things."

I thought about this. I knew it was true. I knew I would go.

It is easy to be worried about the future of our planet. Forests are disappearing. Water cycles are breaking down. Pollution is harming cities. But I am still a little bit hopeful about our planet's future.

Nature is making a comeback in many places. Even in the worst landscapes, nature is developing and regaining its own land. Wolves are moving across Europe and there are more tigers in India. I am not saying we should stop worrying about losing biodiversity (生物多样性), but the good news is that nature isn't so fragile. And in many parts of the world, we are giving it more room to do its thing. For example, farmers are returning land to nature in some areas.

The population is getting smaller. We used to think a continuing baby boom (生育高峰) was a danger to the planet. But today, couples are having half as many children as half a century ago. In fact, the fear in much of the world is that the population is becoming smaller.

Our modern world depends less on materials. This century, the UK's consumption (消耗) of materials has fallen from 16 tonnes a year per head to 11 tonnes. Why? We make much more with less by using modern ways of producing goods. And today's wealthy people spend less money on materials and more on lifestyle experiences: eating out, taking exercise, attending concerts and so on.

I agree that the worst could still happen. To avoid it, we have no choice but to act. And that means staying positive.

In 2014, doctors told Cai Lu he would never walk again. After twelve years, the 34-year-old is proving them wrong—not just by walking, but by running a company.

When he was 22, he lost his right leg in an accident on a business trip. In 2018, Cai began using a prosthetic (义肢) and relearned to walk. But stepping outside was another fight for him. The stares (凝视) he received made him uncomfortable.

A turning point came through Wei Qing, who is a member of a local disabled persons' organization. Wei visited Cai repeatedly, gently inviting him to attend group outings. Cai finally went. "I realized I wasn't alone," he said.

Around 2020, Cai tried starting a fried chicken delivery (快递) business but failed. "Don't rush. Take your time," his mother told him. Hearing her words, Cai stepped back and poured himself into training programs. In 2023, he won a national championship for persons with disabilities in tea art—an achievement that gave him the confidence to start his prosthetics company the same year.

As a prosthetic user himself, Cai could better understand his customers. "Traditional companies fit you and send you away," he said. "We provide full life cycle service: pre-fitting training, fitting, and future support."

His athletic career has also taken off. In 2025, Cai was chosen for China's disabled park golf (高尔夫) team. When he isn't on the green or in the company, he travels as a speaker for schools across Zhejiang province.

Looking back at his experiences, we find the message is simple: "Keep being brave."

The 2026 Aranya Theater Festival presents 34 productions from 14 countries, aiming to draw worldwide attention.

The festival opens with City of Fiction, adapted (改编) from Yu Hua's novel. It tells the story of a young man from northern China who starts a journey south in search of an imaginary city. The festival also presents a lot of other highly expected works. One such show is Na Han, a Chinese-German production adapted from the short story collection by Lu Xun. It explores themes like family relationships. Dans la tempete continue is a French - Chinese production, which focuses on the dynamics (动态) within a family.

Besides drama performances, the festival offers other activities such as workshops and street shows, making visitors' cultural experiences richer.

Once a week, I was allowed to sleep over at my friend Nicole's home, a chance to stay away from my mother.

Why is junk journaling popular? First, there are no rules. You don't need to be a great artist or spend much money. Just glue things together and have fun. What's more, it is also about making friends. Everyone can go to the clubs to show their works and tell stories through their pages.

Making a junk journal is easy and fun. First, just find an old book cover. Fold it in half to make the cover of your junk journal. Then, get your pages ready with different kinds of paper. Next, put the pages into the cover and tie them together. Finally, make it beautiful! Add small bags or stickers (贴纸). Glue your movie tickets or photos in them. Remember: there are no rules. Just have fun and use your hands to tell your own stories!

A Chinese-made shield tunneling machine(盾构隧道机) named "Linghang" is making history. It's digging a 14.25-kilometer tunnel to allow high-speed trains to travel under the Yangtze River. It had completed 11.18 kilometers by March 29 this year.

"Linghang" is 148 meters long and weighs about 4,000 tons, making it the world's largest high-speed rail shield tunneling machine. It also has many high technologies, such as a smart digging system and another to keep water out under high water pressure. Besides, it can give early warnings in real time. These advantages help "Linghang" deal with challenges like huge water pressure, complex geology(复杂的地质) and non-stopping digging. Once finished, the tunnel will allow high-speed trains to cross the river at 350 km/h without slowing down.

This project shows China's growing power in infrastructure(基础建设). Twenty years ago, China had no shield tunneling machines. ____ But today, Chinese-made shield tunneling machines are sold to over 40 countries, holding 70% of the market of the world. As one engineer said, "This is not just a technical achievement. It shows China's leading role in building high-speed underwater tunnels." Under the great river, China is building a road to the future.

On a spring morning, a student named Le Zongyan from Shenzhen Bao'an Middle School, was studying for exams while a bird kept calling loudly outside the window. He was troubled by the noise, so he wrote a letter to the headmaster, suggesting taking away the bird's nest(巢).

The headmaster Yuan Weixing was touched by the letter. He realized the students' need for a quiet study environment, and then he wrote a thoughtful reply.

Yuan expressed his understanding of the pressure students faced. He explained birds sing loudly for dating and communication instead of making noise. "The world does not only belong to humans." Yuan wrote, "Learning to live peacefully with all living things is a necessary part of growing up. The real goal of education is not to ask the world to change for us, but to help us learn how to get along with the world."

"Simply driving the birds away wouldn't be suitable, but doing nothing wasn't good, either." Yuan said. The school then invited environmental experts and students to discuss practical solutions—to provide earplugs(耳塞) to the students in the dorms(寝室) near the wooded areas. At the same time, man-made nests were set up to guide the birds away from the classrooms and dorm buildings.

This simple problem became a life lesson about living in peace with nature.

In a small village lived Wang Ming, a 16-year-old boy from a poor family. He had a dream to become a great runner.

Wang Ming wasn't the fastest, nor the smartest in the school. But he had one silent power. For two years, he kept training every morning. And he took part in every local race but always came second or third. His friends laughed at him and said he was wasting his time. Yet, he kept running day after day.

One rainy day, Wang Ming fell over and hurt his foot. Tired and depressed, he sat under a tree, crying sadly. An old farmer asked why. After hearing his story, the farmer pointed to a bamboo forest. "Do you know how long it takes bamboo to grow? For five years, nothing shows above the ground. But during that time, the roots(根) are growing strong. Then, it shoots up nearly 80 feet tall before you know it. That's the power of never giving up, son. You should be like bamboo."

One year later came a big race. Wang Ming crossed the finishing line first and won the following races. He finally achieved his dream to be a top runner.

Years later, Wang Ming met the farmer again. "Your words saved me from giving up. " he said. The farmer replied, "I only reminded you. You always have the power."

Have Fun in Zigong

Zigong lies in southern Sichuan and is known as the Capital of Salt, the City of Lanterns and the Hometown of Dinosaurs. It's easy to get there by high-speed train. You can have fun in the following places.

My deskmate Jake was noisy, messy and often borrowed my pens without asking. I thought he was 1 . So I hated him and never spoke to him.
